Attn Matchroom - I offer to be the captain.

i beg to differ, Sir.

two years ago, i was calling for Johan (in his "retirement"), to take on Team USA as Coach - because it would be a given, that we'd win.
two years ago, in the Beatles celebratory Lounge, i was talking to Lee Brett about taking on Team USA for the win.

you, of ALL people, understand what i'm saying above, you Brit. ;) yáll have a raisin' that we don't. it's inherent; instilled. to beat them - you have to be them. there is absolutely nothing more exciting in pool, than the Mosconi. yáll play it well, and to your advantage; you thrive on the energy of your fans from the stands. and it works. it's what Europe does -

we, on the other hand, do NOT. it is a mindset that we have not accomplished yet. (i tip my hat to you, as an American :bow-down:) Mark Wilson is fantastic, but - you & i both know, that it would take an ENGLISH coach, to gear-up Team USA & jerk a fricken knot. and especially for next year.

i'm sure you know Lee, and so do we. he was here a couple of weeks ago & it was great to see his British Arse. he has the wear-with-all mentality to get us/USA where we NEED to be. and for the players who can't "hang" with that....well....then they'll continue to eat 50% losses.

it is a mindset that yáll are accomplished in. and until we have lived it, and understood it, we fail to relate, and hence, conquer. i think yáll FEAR him taking over the Team...?

Lee is what we need.

(albeit, an arse)

cmon....he just wants the notoriety and the money

Matchroom, just give me a team of non players, 15 years and I'll have their fundamentals up to scratch so they can't be beat. Oh, you want it in e-ink,Barry? I understand Barry, you're a busy man. Hey, Barry... What's your email? inyourdreams@LOL.com. Did you mean AOL.com, barry? Oh, LOL.com... Got it Barry. See you later, Barry. Oh sh*t,I knew I wanted to ask him something. HEY BARRRRRYYYYYYY!!!!! Can I get your autogra.... Oh, he's gone.

lee brett is the fricking guy for real???

possibly the most disliked person in the pool community.
banging other peoples wives
doesnt pay his dues
remember him and appleton spat few years back
takes credit for things he hasnt done

oh ye the V grip he invented that apparently,
just takes some of the snooker fundamentals and tries to incorporate them to pool he is a fraud

no players respect him, id bet my house not any of the top 20 guys in US pool respect him as a person let alone a coach

I don't know Lee Brett. I did see his free online video and have read about him on the forum. That is the extent of my knowledge. I very much doubt that he has the chance to get on this team as captain, too much politics and national pride.

That being said, I don't get why Mark Wilson gets a pass for his 0 and 2 record. "He is working long term", "He has a plan" etc is all I hear. What has he done result wise that was so fantastic, if I may ask? Improved on the worst result ever? That was bound to happen anyway, that year was an anomaly. I have nothing against him, but I don't see why he should have this holy cow status. He tried his way, now maybe it's time to try somebody else? There are no good US coaches that believe they can do anything for the US team? I find that hard to believe.

I don't think the captain/coach is as important as is being claimed, either. He has a role to play, but overall it's the mentality of the player that counts in this sport. The European players play like focused professionals as did the American young guns. For the older players it seems plain to me that this is a free-roll for some of them. Others fail to perform at all. You don't need to play at 100% to win the Mosconi cup. I think an 80% of top ability might be enough for these guys, if they could only maintain it.

If I somehow had to pick the team, I would completely cut loose all the players with bad records lately in the cup. I'd only pick the ones who perform, and that are young and hungry. No free-roll-riders, rather young and hungry up and comers with something to prove like Woodward. For those players a coach may have more of an influence as well, for the better or for the worse.

watchez i know every player who can play in this country since 2009. I can get the job done. I only need one go at it. Yes i am that confident.

Lee i am not trying to rain on your parade but i have to be cruel to be kind. I think that you don't fully understand what the basic credentials are for such a high profile role. Basic communication skills are a must and the form of your reply does nothing to indicate that these are within your grasp. Your plan apppears very short term and consists of tinkering with player's basic fundamentals. I don't think you have the credibility to carry that off.

Doug this is where we beg to differ, saying i am inferior is way off the mark, this shows how much you actually know. I am not disrespecting mark at all, it is obvious you are good friends with him and got him the job, i have been told by matchroom i would never get the job, same thing it reminds me of thorsten hohmann was world #1 and not picked, politics and face fits. Go ask thorsten, he will tell you he won't be picked.
====================================
Just for the record i did not get mark the job. I encouraged him to put in an application and it was this resume that got him the post. We talk regularly and i think that he respects advice that i offer him. But he is his own man.

================================
Played 2 lost 2, i am afraid the record is there in black and white doug, we are in a results business, if he was a manager of another sport he'd be fired. You say another poor judgement, you can carry on bringing up other peoples past, but only god can judge a man and know what they went through in there life. We can't all be brought up and be perfect angels like you doug, we all have a past, mine is mentioned all the time and i am judged by this. An american player not so long ago a major past, i didn't hear anything mentioned, he has turned his life around and good for him.

I will be releasing all free videos on you tube in the next few months, maybe you can judge me when you actually see me work. Until i am the captain, you can't say inferior to do a better job. I will spell it out in one word why the problem exists when the heat is on.

Fundamentals

doug you picked mark, so next year when its 7 straight loses will you say give him time? I hope you prove me wrong, but until that happens i understand you have to stand by your horse...the americans need to start being more ruthless.

Shane - 60% of his ability
mike - 30/40%
corey - 30/40%

justin and skyler - performed to what you need to win the cup, mark picked them as both wild cards, job well done, i'd of picked the same 2 players.

Will corey and mike be picked next year if they don't get in on the ranking? Because they didn't perform, i'd say no. So you could argue they should be given another chance to perform also. Fine line who is to blame, players or the coach. At the end of the day, accepting we played better but lost is a losing mentality.

The 3 players who didn't perform to their best and they will admit this. This is where the coach does his job, to get the to perform and fix what they are doing wrong. I wrote down what they was doing wrong, simple quick fixes to make them perform to their ability.

I will stick to my lower level of being a low level coach and let time prove me right or wrong. But give more respect where it is due, saying i am inferior is clueless. All my life i have had adversity and proved everybody wrong. If only we could gamble at coaching like shane does at pool. There has been an open offer to any coach in the world that wants to show me i am a low level coach. I am the best at what i do and i can back those words up anytime.

Been a dream to coach in the mosconi cup, i will hold out one day i got the chance. But please don't tell me i aint good enough. And judge people by making poor judgments when they was young.

I will even offer my time to come to st louis and work with mark and the team. I am all for seeing american win again.
===============================================
i was trying to keep my responses within the text of your reply but i am unble to achieve this without compromising my own standard of communication. It is almost 2am. So sometime in the next 24 hours i will elaborate my own views in a new thread.

Seems like this is a conversation to have directly with Barry and/or Luke.
Calling them out on a public forum might be perceived as an insult.

Well Shane and MD certainly don't have stellar records however no one in thier right mind boots them from the team given MDs better behavior ,, Sky and Berg in my mind are the best of the rest , so the only player your looking for is number 5
Mark did a tremendous effort in changing attitudes from the premadona self centered thinking it was clear they acted as a team and not as individuals the margin of the Euros victory was less than the number might suggest and certainly a better performance than last yr ,,
That's no accident they were better prepared for the task with a team that had atleast a couple of players who's stock is rising very fast and gained experience that could only be had by playing in this event that knoledge is priceless
There really is no better corse of action than staying the course , there is no need to waver that I can see and certainly not one that would evolve changing the Capt / coach
If that was even a consideration love Lee but he's a Britt not a American my next choice would be Varner if a choice had to be made

Yeah I don't even know who the alternatives would be. Mark Wilson is probably the only true pool coach in the US.

If you had to pick someone else, there are instructors like Scott Lee, Randy G, & Jerry Briesath. There are older players like Varner, some of whom might be good coaches but most would not. There are well-liked pros who themselves probably wouldn't be on the team, maybe someone like Tony Robles. Beyond a few more names like that, none of whom are as ideal as Mark Wilson, who else is there?

I love Sky....and he very much deserved the selection this year....and proved it.....but this above.....is nonsense.

He would of proved it last year as well, just like he always does. And the scary thing is his game still has a lot of upside.

Robles would be a good choice.

What's that saying? Most new businesses will succeed or fail within the first 3 years. I say if Mark doesn't get the job done next year, THEN it might be time to move forward.

This thread should be binned by the mods as there is nothing positive to gain only negative loss.

Mr. Brett may not be the guy...or... he may actually be even with some baggage of the past. This is America & we generally give individuals a second chance, but... it's up to Mr. Hearns.

I don't think the intention is to 'instruct' anyone in their mechanics so an instructor is not the answer. Did Mr. Wilson change SVB or MD? I think that would be on them to do IF they want to be selected.

The head coach of a football team does not teach or 'instruct' the mechanics of each position. Their are position coaches for that.

The head coach builds the chemistry & attitude of the team.

That, I think, is what Mr. Brett & Pink Lady are talking about.

No offense to anyone but college pool is not the Mosconi Cup.

That said, perhaps Mr. Wilson has earned another year as he was a 'Rookie Mosconi Coach' last year.

The thing to remember is that this is a 'production' that is controlled by Barry Hearns. He makes the decisions.

It was USA vs ENG. at one time & then went to USA vs Europe. Perhaps it is time for a ENG vs The World experiment.

Perhaps Mr. Hearns might see it like Pink Lady & Mr. Brett & make a change. How about Earl as Capt? Not that he would accept, but... How about Buddy Hall if he is healthy. Someone that the 'team' would want to win for. Sometimes playing for others yields better results that playing for one's self.

I've said elsewhere that IMO the Coach/Capt. should NOT be made to have ANY member on 'His Team'. There should be a qualifying criteria but then the Coach/Capt. should be able to select the whole team & not even have to take the #1 qualifier, if he does not want to do that for some reason. Or... have the team be a complete qualifier with some tournaments near the end so that perhaps that 5th. man will be the one that is playing the best right up to the end of qualifying & that is the team that the Coach/Capt. gets.

Also, maybe the qualifying tournaments, say 4 or 5 should be of the same format as the Cup, single elimination races to 5.

Just my thoughts & I know it would be asking a lot.

Bottom line is that it is Mr. Hearns' hands. If he wants a USA win then he'll do whatever he thinks will get that.

Best 2 You & All.

In my opinion, Mosconi Cup captaincy fo Team USA ought to be based on a few considerations:

1) Former American professional player
2) Mosconi Cup experience, former Team USA member
3) Coaching/instruction experience
4) a good relationship with prospective Team USA players
5) a track record of good sportsmanship and respect for the game
6) meritorious service to the game in America

I argued in the past that the two Americans who measure up better than any others are Mark Wilson and Tony Robles, so I was delighted with the Mark Wilson pick.

Tony Robles should be next:

a) 2003 BCA Open Champion
b) Member of the winning Team USA in 2003
c) one of the most respected instructors in the Northeast US
d) very well liked in all pro pool circles
e) two time winner of PBT sportsmanship award
f) founder of the Predator Tour and the North American Pool League

Tony would be perfect and, in my opinion, should be next up if/when Mark Wilson tires of this post.

- Thank you, i can get the job done. I only need one go at it. Yes i am that confident.

This isn't about me, this is where you are missing the boat, This is about winning for the nation and all you passionate fans, and putting any differences aside, this is not politics, but i am afraid the Mosconi cup is becoming this, got to be a yes man is what i hear people say.

A great soccer team had 2 goalscorers who hated each other, but they played together and won everything. It's called winning for the cause, many players hated the manager, but he made them perform.

Doug this is where we beg to differ, saying i am inferior is way off the mark, this shows how much you actually know. ok yáll, let's all step back, take a breath, and re-read the above. it's IRRITATING, isn't it? and THAT, is who they are. THAT, is what we are up against.

RUTHLESS - there's your word.

as for a Brit coaching USA - it makes me want to puke that we have no one better to jerk-a-knot; Art of War....

spin this 180 degrees: JOHAN is available. then, what would your comments be?

PL <---- sorry, but i've been indisposed for the past 24hrs

i personally agree, but - it's what they do. you CANNOT insult them. they THRIVE on it. they win; they lose; they literally beat each other to a pulp - and then they buy each other a beer & it's "past". they are actually very cool.

So when a player either on USA or Europe upsets or disagrees with Lee, would he ask them to step into a ring as well? Yeah that's what we need.
