haven't contributed, but I'd like to suggest local, walter (black-balled). he's been impressive against top competition in the planet pool tour and in local tournaments.

how is it decided who gets the spot? when is it decided?

The how is indicated in the first post in this thread. The when isn't really decided, but to enable the player chosen to make plans, I'd hope we'd settle all this by the mid-summer.

I'm in...

Donation and vote are on the way via PayPal...

Best of luck to the deserving AZ representative...

Just for the record ....

California is on the McCready travel schedule, and I'm hoping we can venture on out there and enjoy some West Coast pool action someday soon.

It would be GREAT to see you make the trek to the U.S. Open, Jimmy! It warms my heart at each U.S. Open when the California players come to play. Last year, a young man from Oklahoma battled his way through a tough field and won the championship title. It's the stuff that pool dreams are made of.

I heard you were just recently married, and it just so happens that the slogan for the Commonwealth State is: "Virginia is for lovers." :)

Come to the U.S. Open and be all that you can be! Win or lose, you and yours will have a grand old time!

Just for the record Jam .... Gabe is from Wichita, Kansas. He grew up here.
He moved to Tulsa, and has split his time between here and there. He came back here for 2 years to work for his Dad, Bob Owen, at Shurtz's Custom Cues. Bob is a partner and cuemaker for Shurtz, and a good friend of mine.
Double J was part of the influence for Gabe to move to Tulsa since they are
such good friends.

I think I remember Gabe's mom posting on this forum a while back with a similar Gabe bio. And I think I remember her mentioning the State of Georgia, but I don't know how it fits in. However, it's always nice to read about a player's roots, especially the current U.S. Open champion.

My post would have been better worded if I had wrote "a young man living in Oklahoma" instead of "a young man from Oklahoma."

I think I now have forum-itis. Symptoms: dyslexic fingers and poor word choices. :)

and the reason why ...

Jam ... The reason why I clarified that is because for years, Wichita has been
a "AAA" city for Pool, and never seems to get credit for some of the very good
players we have here. We always seem to be in the shadow of OKC and Tulsa.
Granted both of those cities host some great players off and on, but Wichita
has some great students of the sport as well. A few of the players from here
have migrated to Oklahoma for tougher competition and the money games
down there.

On another subject, I realize most of the regular posters on this board are
from Eastern states, and I am a midwesterner, and not well known to other
posters (and an ole man in the sport), it would have been nice to have been
considered as a candidate for the U.S. Open, although I personally feel that
Keith is probably the best qualified for the position.

I had not known that, Scott. That's some pretty cool pool factoids! :)

Which player is heralded as Wichita's best? And what's the best pool room from that State, just for my inquiring mind? :p

Anybody is qualified to be at the U.S. Open, Scott. That's what makes it kind of a unique tournament: a place where players of all caliber are welcome, with no strings attached. The only thing you have to do is bring your best game! AND you know about Spanish Mike winning it when he 54 years old! ;)

I think the ballots for the U.S. Open aren't sealed yet, or are they? If more monies are committed to come into the player's fund, there are still some open votes out there in AzBilliards Land to be cast. I can't see any reason why you shouldn't put your name on the roster, if you'd like to. I am mailing in two votes with my $50, which has yet to be sent, but I am most definitely committed!

Well, James Waldon hung out here before going down to Oklahoma. He is one of the best roadplayers in the country. Daulton's backer backed down from matching up with James. Terry Young, 2 times National Champion and owner of Rumors Billiards here, is a very good player, been awhile, but has beat #5 #6 ranked Pro before. Steve 'Lil Steve' Rector is an excellent player, won State Championship and many tournaments. Mike 'Gumby' Beehler is very good, married now, but still a tough tough 1 hole player. Mark Rogers is very good, and years ago beat all kinds of Pros in Louieville. I watched him in Vegas beat the Mexican National Champion one night for $80 a game, all night
long. Paul Weigand, that owns Shooters here is very good. Of course, I can not forget Cliff 'Junior' Brown, famous around here for 30 years, and the main
subject of Chapter 19 in the Green Felt Jungle when he lived in New Orleans
for 7 years. And even I have a little notoriety, lastly, winning the Kansas
State BCA championship 2 years ago, when I was 55.

LOL. I got a taste of James Waldon a couple years ago in Louisville. It was late at night and the TV table was empty in the tournament room at the Executive West Hotel. Keith and Harry Platis were chumming around, having not seen each other in quite some time. Keith and Harry both had the flu real bad, but didn't want it to ruin their Derby City Classic experience. James had a friend with him, who was rumored to be his stakehorse, but he also "played a little bit" they said. After a mini barkfest, the four of them went into a partners match of one-pocket.

The TV table was wired into all the hotel rooms for the guests, and soon the bleacher seats began to fill with insomniacs and others wanting to catch a little late night action! :p

I was sitting on the rail sweating it as usual, and up walks Jose Parica. He sits down next to me and says, "Jennie, I hate to tell you this, but you better tell Keith that he can't win in this game. Him and Harry got no shot against those two guys." I'm thinking, gee, isn't this nice!

As the games transpired, several more of Keith's friends quietly approached me, whispering in my ear, "Keith better pull up." After a couple sets, it was all over, with Waldon et al. stuffing their pockets. Harry Platis actually impressed me that match, though, with his banking capabilities. He was executing some great long-rail banks. Both of them had the flu, but Harry played great and was actually keeping his team alive on many shots. I never did find out who the other fellow was, looked very much like James, except blond hair and with a beard.

That settles it, then. You gotta come to Virginia this September. That is a great accomplishment, and I think the State of Kansas needs representation, and who else but you! The Open is calling your name! :)

Vag ... They are ... Julie is is Texas, and has been since breaking up with Coy
Lee Nicholson, and Donnie Brown is in Oklahoma, not sure if Tulsa or OKC. Oh,
and before I forgot about Jeremy Vulgamore, a real real good player, but he
does not pursue his talent like he should (has Cory Deuel type talent). A real good Pool buddy of mine, Jamie Sanders, is married to Julie's sister, Carol.

Last year Jimmy Mendoza and Rude Dog won the votes, did they not? At the last minute Jimmy was unable to go because of work. That must have been heartbreaking to the guy, to miss out on something like that. I don't know how many of you have seen him play, but the guy plays JAM UP. My vote goes to Jimmy.

Mike,
Its a hard choice with the players you have on that list. You sure know how to make it hard to make a choice. I also like the fact that we are getting some facts on these players. Good luck to all for this contest and good luck to the winner when the play begins.
