AzBilliards Age Poll: Please vote for the over or under!

Are you over or under 35?

  • I am over 35 years old.

    Votes: 197 73.8%
  • I am 35 years old or under 35 years old.

    Votes: 70 26.2%

  • Total voters
    267
  • Poll closed .
And there's the issue: we tend to believe our experiences are representative of the world- which is precisely what you have done and are defending- but they aren't necessarily.

Valid poll, even though it is not asking about demographics of pool rooms:

As I'm sure are you. Doesn't make the opinion irrelevant. I've owned or had ownership in 5 different rooms around the country over that time. I believe I was fairly well aware of my client base during those times. ;) And thus form the basis of my opinion.....right or wrong.

Soon the place will be filled with a bunch of trolls and mean-spirited people. Maybe this will please you and keep you coming back for more.

It already is. My actual participation has dropped considerably over the last several years due to this. There are few "discussions", mostly arguments. And, that's not even considering the NPR section:p

Can't think of a single room in a single state I've lived in on 40 years that thats the

case....out side of maybe the few late business hours of a weekending night.

Clearly there may be a rare exception.

FWIW, on league nights, I'm usually one of (if not THE) oldest persons in the poolhall at age 58. It's mostly 30 (and under) year olds.

wow, never thought az members are so "old".
I thought a lot of member would be younger than 35 years old.. I'm 22 and I'm one of the younger

If I could delete this poll now, I certainly would.

NO WAY!

This forum has turned into a place for people to take potshots at others.

Not all of us!

Why on earth would this poll warrant this kind of sarcasm?

It Doesn't!

Why is everybody angry all the time?

I'm not. I'm very happy and so is the wife. I disarm people with a smile.

I think the poll shows what we need to do but the question is how. Get young bloods on the table. Just the other day I was talking to the new manager. The subject was fresh blood. How do you get the kids to enter our world. I'm a young old timer where I play. I'm 61 1/2.

Keep up the good work.

Enjoy the forum. Keep up the good work!

Good poll, nothing wrong with learning something.

I guess some people know everything, so a poll is useless to them.
Maybe the next poll should be how many of AZers are obnoxious internet bullies that enjoy pouncing on others for sport.

You are right, it is is an angry place.....

there isnt a "jesus was a freshman when i graduated high school" option... so i just put that im 36 and holding... but im quickly running out of hands to hold with.

I'm a groupie, almost 60 years of age. Gee, I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or a slam. You're right. My contributions to this forum suck compared to yours.

You, on the other hand, make this forum shine brightly. Keep up the great work!

dont let jerks get you down JAM, i heard a quote from mike tyson that reminds me alot of the attitude with internet posters... it went something like this...

"everyone is a tough guy until i hit them in the mouth"

your contributions to the board are a wonderful addition, at least for this ole bird... i just wish i could have met you and keith in person... ive seen keith in action a long time ago, in california when he was a youngster, and it was one of the funniest things ive ever seen... i can only imagine what it would be like to hang out with him and his better half.

dont let the few bad apples on the site ruin the whole bunch.

There's 7 days a week and 14-16 business hours a day. ;)

Most league participants seems to run right in that 30-40 year old range of players who play league regularly session after session in my experience so during those times it may be a push....until you factor in the number of those people on this forum for the purpose of this poll.

I guess we'll wait and see how the poll turns out.

Maybe this is a regional thing, but there's quite a few pool rooms that do not serve alcohol, so there is no age restriction.

It is smart alecks like you with your "no pool needed" comment that makes contributing to this forum suck. Soon the place will be filled with a bunch of trolls and mean-spirited people. Maybe this will please you and keep you coming back for more.

It already seems to be filling up with trolls and pot stirrers. I miss the good old days of alt.sport.pool and rec.sport.billiard on the usenet.

Maybe some will find this interesting.

This is from an older marketing report so it may not be 100% accurate but its at least a snap shot from some point in time.

US:

- “There are more than 120,000 locations nationwide with at least one pool table on premise.”

- “42,000 of these establishments have more than five tables.”

- “Over 10,000 of these establishments have ten or more pool tables
on-premise and use pool as their primary form of entertainment.”

Demographics of pool players

- “Men account for 63% of all participants
- 43% of all participants are between 18 – 34 years old
- 37.5 million people play pool
- 14 million played 12 or more days
- 8.3 million played 24 or more days
- 4.6 million played 50 plus days”

Main sources of revenue in a Billiard Club:

Alcohol – 47%
Pool Tables – 35%
Food – 12.5%
Pro-Shop – 5%

“Retail Sales of Pool tables represent 50% of all purchases, while 90%
of all tables are purchased for in-home use. The annual, wholesale
billiard marketplace is $268 million.”

“Approximately 320,000 coin-op tables were on location in America last
year, according to the V/T’s 2001 Census study. The survey further
showed that the number of coin-op tables on location nationwide only
grew by a moderate 2.6% from 1999 to 2000, representing some 8,000
additional placements.”

There is without a doubt more elderly men patronizing the poolhalls during the normal working hours. Rusty's in Ft. Worth is full of old farts like me playin' friendly games (or cheap sets} of 1-pocket all afternoon. The old guys on a fixed income like to get in on the "all-day" rates.

The league people OTOH, are a bunch of youngsters that have even less money than us old farts do. They like to play league 'cause then they can get free table time and you can bet your bottom dollar that they get there as early as they can and rarely ever turn in that rack of "free" balls once the league matches are over ;). So, for the most part, they're playing for free. Young people trying to "get over the hump" in life LOVE free stuff!!!

Damn right about that.

really young people ( range 14-18) don't play pool also because it is very expensive.
Here, where I live it costs 9€ per hour which is 12$. When I was younger I had many friend who wanted to play but they didn't have the money.

Well, I was actually interested in the demographics of this forum more so than a pool room, but I understand your strategy for coming to that conclusion.

In my area, believe it or not, at least the pool rooms I used to frequent, there were more younger folk playing pool, especially on the leagues. There were not men over 35 in a smoke-filled opium den where women aren't allowed to come in.

Again, I wish I hadn't done this poll, and I think it's time for moi to take another hiatus from this happy forum. It's so nice to contribute to a forum and get targeted with flippant remarks made by cantankerous souls.

I think my time would be better spent doing something else while I'm at work. Hey, I got an idea. Maybe I should spend more time working and not hanging out on this forum. Now, there's a novel idea!

Jen:

In faux Latin:

"Illegitimi non carborundum."

As a fellow published writer, you obviously know what this means. I've been reevaluating my own time and efforts on these forums -- and have bailed on a couple occasions, only to come back. But when I get even just one "hey Sean, thanks for posting that -- it really helped me" -- it makes it all worthwhile.

I see where you're going with these polls, and I think the demographic data you're collecting from them is eye-opening and interesting to say the least.

Please don't bail or give up -- your prose is much appreciated around these parts! (And even when those of us don't get to say so, as much as we *should*, because we're busy or what-not.)

Keep on keeping on!
-Sean

Thanks Jam, I feel old now. I'm either a kid or a fogey. :D

The BCA collects detailed stats on pool as a whole, but AZ has an older and better caliber (skill level) player as far as the better known posters go.

Since you're in the mood for stats, here are the results from my 8-Ball vs 9-Ball pages on Facebook. I only included the results from 8-Ball since they are very similar and 8-Ball has 2344 fans where 9-Ball is languishing at 163.

You got that right, Pushout. It's a shame. We used to really have fun on this forum from time to time. :(

That is quite interesting, Ghosst. Thanks for sharing!
