In faux Latin:

"Illegitimi non carborundum."

As a fellow published writer, you obviously know what this means. I've been reevaluating my own time and efforts on these forums -- and have bailed on a couple occasions, only to come back. But when I get even just one "hey Sean, thanks for posting that -- it really helped me" -- it makes it all worthwhile.

I see where you're going with these polls, and I think the demographic data you're collecting from them is eye-opening and interesting to say the least.

Please don't bail or give up -- your prose is much appreciated around these parts! (And even when those of us don't get to say so, as much as we *should*, because we're busy or what-not.)

Keep on keeping on!
-Sean

Thank you, Sean, for the good words. I need to remember the folks like you who keep this place sane!

It already seems to be filling up with trolls and pot stirrers. I miss the good old days of alt.sport.pool and rec.sport.billiard on the usenet.

In a way, RSB used to be tame compared to this NextGen group on AzBilliards. There's no unity here. I wonder what the next pool social media site will be.

dont let jerks get you down JAM, i heard a quote from mike tyson that reminds me alot of the attitude with internet posters... it went something like this...

"everyone is a tough guy until i hit them in the mouth"

your contributions to the board are a wonderful addition, at least for this ole bird... i just wish i could have met you and keith in person... ive seen keith in action a long time ago, in california when he was a youngster, and it was one of the funniest things ive ever seen... i can only imagine what it would be like to hang out with him and his better half.

dont let the few bad apples on the site ruin the whole bunch.

Thanks, Tuda. Keith read this post just now and said thank you. I'd post a picture of him with today's date to prove it he read your post, but I don't have time.

You see, when Keith posts here, everybody says it is me writing and not Keith, so he quit posting on AzBilliards, unless I beg him to reply to a thread.

Good poll, nothing wrong with learning something.

I guess some people know everything, so a poll is useless to them.
Maybe the next poll should be how many of AZers are obnoxious internet bullies that enjoy pouncing on others for sport.

You are right, it is is an angry place.....

Maxx, as long as there's good pool peeps like you, maybe AzBilliards will survive. I sure hope so! It used to be really fun for me in the mornings while I was trying to wake up, catching up on all the pool smut! :p

I'm not. I'm very happy and so is the wife. I disarm people with a smile.

I think the poll shows what we need to do but the question is how. Get young bloods on the table. Just the other day I was talking to the new manager. The subject was fresh blood. How do you get the kids to enter our world. I'm a young old timer where I play. I'm 61 1/2.

Keep up the good work.

I like your strategy, Fenwick. Bravo! There's nothing better than a good smile to keep the spirits up. I notice when I go to the grocery store, if I have a smile on my face, I get a smile back from a lot of folk.

We do need to get some young blood to the tables. The leagues are what's happening. That's what is keeping pool alive and well to date.

I think the responses let us realize the social dynamics and how the age groups differ. I remember a few yrs back, the BCA did a similar type of questionairre, tho Waaaaaaaaay more involved, and the stats derived from this enterprise were very interesting & I'm sure helpful. It's neat to find out stats on, income, pool table ownership, cues, home ownership, married or not, and such, it gives the mfg and us as players, a clearer picture of the play side market and its relationship to the true home market.

I was wondering about the demographics on this forum in comparison to the demographics you are referencing. I was curious if the membership here was much different than mainstream pool culture.

I know advertising peeps like these kinds of stats for sure. Thanks for the info, Island Drive.

There is without a doubt more elderly men patronizing the poolhalls during the normal working hours. Rusty's in Ft. Worth is full of old farts like me playin' friendly games (or cheap sets} of 1-pocket all afternoon. The old guys on a fixed income like to get in on the "all-day" rates.

The league people OTOH, are a bunch of youngsters that have even less money than us old farts do. They like to play league 'cause then they can get free table time and you can bet your bottom dollar that they get there as early as they can and rarely ever turn in that rack of "free" balls once the league matches are over ;). So, for the most part, they're playing for free. Young people trying to "get over the hump" in life LOVE free stuff!!!

Maniac

During the day, I do think older folk may frequent the pool rooms more than the evenings.

At Barry Behrman's pool room in Norfolk, they offer free pool during the day of you buy a sandwich. Have you ever been to his pool room? It's huge, with big tables, little tables, all kinds of tables. I wish we had a pool room like that in my area!

In the early 2000's the BCA did its footwork at the BCA Nationals in May directly with those players.

I'm 36, but if I look at the demographic of most of the pool rooms I've played at here in Toronto and it's outskirts I would say the majority of players (at least in the evening) are in their late teens and 20s.

JAM, I'm sure both you and Keith realize this, but not "everybody" thinks its you making Keiths posts here.

I'm also quite sure you both know that old saying that says 10% of the people involved cause 90% of the problems, or some such. Yes, there are some genuine stuff-stirrers here, and they can be relentless. But those of us who really appreciate both of you contributing here are far greater in number. We're here, we're reading, and we're appreciative.

When the trolls come out from under their bridge, it makes folks like me want to leap into the fray, in an effort to try and help. Unfortunately, it not only doesn't help, it only encourages the trolls further. I'm not leaving you hung out alone, just trying not to derail things further, delighting the trolls. I'm quite certain there are many who feel the same way.

Please know that there are many, many folks that enjoy both of you posting here, and please try to not let the trolls drive you away. Then they gain the satisfaction of "winning", while the rest of us lose. Please extend this to Keith as well. He is a genuine legend, and we're fortunate that he comes on here at all...

You got that right, Pushout. It's a shame. We used to really have fun on this forum from time to time. :(

In all honesty, the forum these days reminds me of the old usenet newsgroup rec.sport.billiard as it was when I left. I know a bunch of folks here besides you and me who used to haunt that forum, including our good friend Smorg who is no longer with us. I'm more than a bit jaded about the state of pool in this country as, I'm sure so many of us are. I have to admit that my enthusiasm is waning, I'm afraid.
