Bad rolls....

I've been playing this game for some time now. I've found it odd and amazing how your game can go down and up often. In and out of stroke which usually helps your game when you get back to playing better and end your "out of stroke cycle".
I took a long break during the summer as most players do and have been progressively getting back into playing like I feel I should. I know what to expect and an "out of stroke" couple of days, maybe a week is on its way. But instead I get a week of just 'Bad Rolls'.
Bad rolls is something I've dealt with before of course, but this is just ridiculous. On top of me getting bad rolls my oponent is getting extraordinary rolls. I would love to say I'm making this far fetched and exagerated but its true. I break pefect and a last rolling ball hooks me or kicks me in the pocket. They fluke a missed ball in or hook me where there is no kick that would gain me any edge unless I could sub in Efren.
I usually have a pretty level head when playing but when you go through a few hours of this crap you tend to break down or at least I do. In a sense I don't mind it. I know it will be good for my mental game. Its tough though. I get aggrevated but try to plane myself out with healthy mental conversation.
All in all I will be glad when this is over or at least not as noticable. Just been an interesting occurance. Just thought I'd vent a little and kinda put what I've been thinking into text.

not impossible

It isn't impossible to have an ugly streak of bad rolls entirely not our doing but often when we really think about it the bad rolls are mostly our fault. Of course we take more note of the bad rolls and less of the good when we feel that we are on an unlucky streak too. Mostly I feel we make our own luck.

Time to pump up the mental game as you are doing and think positive. If you are getting an unusual number of genuine bad rolls the pendulum has to swing the other way too!

Sounds like you're playing too much 9 ball. I've seen great players get blanked by average players playing 9 ball.

Everyone has nights where no matter what you do wrong, you will be rewarded for it. I've had nights recently where I've only missed 2 or 3 balls, but never left an out, and blanked my opponent.

I've also had nights where I've missed 2 or 3 balls, left an easy out, and got beat 10-1.

The pool gods are fickle, and they never stay loyal to anyone.

I feel ya...

In last night's league matches, I experienced the worst bad rolls of my life. Getting hooked by the last rolling ball, opponents making hail mary shots after I put them in a safety...I've never seen everything go my opponents way like that ever.

I felt myself getting a little upset so I took a break, had a cigarette, came back, and......still lost haha.

Hang in there, the balls will roll in your favor one day

9 ball does profound bad rolls or slumps. My problem lately is the one key shot from a runout is the one I miss. Balls hanging in the pocket have been a recent pain also.

it's the story of my life, I run bad. anything that includes any degree of luck pretty much owns me.

pool, fantasy football, poker, pretty much everything. it's standard.

in the end...

a guy who showed me a few things the first year or so i started this bitter sweet sport told me this... he always wanted his luck to come at the end so when guys were getting lucky early and middle of a set or session he just took it in and understood that all his luck would come at the end. that's the way i try to look at it. it's only when the end never comes that it gets BRUTAL and over the last 18 years that's happened a few times. you just always remember the bad beats like sports betting and poker more than the lucky outs you make.

You wanna play some for a couple of bucks?:o

Why is it that you never hear anyone post about all the "lucky rolls' they have been getting for the last few weeks or for the last month or so?

The better players know how to handle these situations. They accept what happens and move on. They don't piss and moan, make cringy faces, make grunts and groans or whine, they accept what happens and move on to the next shot.
That is what most good players do. I have also seen C players do the same thing. They accept what has happened and move on. This isn't difficult to do, most players can do this with just a little discipline.

Misery loves company  He was just sharing his experience. Besides, people tend to remember the bad rolls more than the good ones~

How very true!!!

I was just discussing this with some players.... they could all remember their last BAD shot.. .but none of them could remember the last GREAT shot they made.

But, 2 of the 3 remembered some GREAT shots the others made.

They say that the bad rolls even-out with the good ones, but I don't know who THEY were. Most the bad rolls I got over the years were do to my shooting errors. Bad rolls like hitting a ball while trying to go down the table, scratching on the 9 or 8-ball because I didn't play position while shooting the last ball, or getting too close to your next ball. Bad rolls probably even out for the pro player, but not the average Joe. We tend to only remember the BAD rolls anyway. The GOOD rolls we tend to feel we did them with skill....NOT. Johnnyt

I agree, Tom. You know, the thing is... most times we are responsible for how the table lays... meaning that we're the one that hits the balls and therefore we're responsible for their ending positions. To complain is a waste of energy. Rafael taught me that.

Pool parallels life in every way, your overview of good/bad reminds me of the gamut I go through weekly at work, and living day to day. If it wasn't for the bad, we wouldn't notice the good so much.

For

every 'action' there is a 'reaction'. If you are guiding the action, you can not complain about the 'reaction'. Bad equipment can cause good or bad luck, but other than that, you control your own destiny.

when we win we're good players, when we lose we got unlucky.
as the singer Jackson Brown said in an old song, when telling old stories "we maxamize the wins and forget about the losses"
PS; the guy that's playing better usually gets the good rolls.

I've actually tried to use this as a learning experience. I take them well the first hour or so but I have to say they broke me down by the end of the night. Giving weight and getting bad rolls gets a little disasterous. Like I said though I try to use this time to bring my mental game up a few notches.
