Barry Behrman responds to ABP press release

I wonder if anybody knows that Barry Behrman provides the beautiful green jackets for each U.S. Open 9-Ball champion.

As well, he gives the wives and girlfriends a free pass to view the week-long tournament.

The last couple days, he gives every single lady who walks in the tournament room a long-stem red rose.

Not only does he give free entry fee to previous U.S. Open 9-Ball champions, but he also offers free entry fee to some legendary or aged players, hoping to give them incentive to come.

I know there's some things I'm forgetting, but those are just a couple of perks that Barry does that I don't see all the time at other events. It's one of many things that makes the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship unique.

Here's the line I like the best:

"In my career, I have seen all men's player organizations come and go, but the U.S. Open is still standing."

Darn tootin'. All it takes is a race to 7 to break up any attempt at a structured men's pool organization. The players aren't savvy enough to run a stable business. Just because you can open your own pool hall doesn't mean you can group together the top 100 or 200 players in the US into a well-oiled business plan.

Does Mark Cuban shoot pool? He would knock some structure into these guys.

From the Horse's Mouth.....

That should stop some of that he said she said bullshit

There is being paid and then their is being paid in a timely manner.

Do you wait until your employer has the cash to pay you for the work you just did or do you expect to be paid in a timely manner for that work?

Pro have bills, bills can not wait.

Either have the money up front or don't put on the tourney. Putting on a tourney hoping to make ends meet, and then take forever to pay out is not fair to the players who also have fallen on hard times because of slow to no payouts from those that put on a tourney.

Until the players take a stand like this, nothing is gonna change.

Sounds like the ABP is acting like a bunch of politicians that make decisions without regard to others. I've attended the US Open for the past 20 years and have enjoyed every second I was there. Now this BS from a newly formed group of players.....let me tell you...you're not players....you're greedy and don't care about the fans at all. $$$$$$ ruins the world and has now ruined you....very sad time in pool history! There will be a day when you regret your decision.

I say to you....Rethink your decison....talk to the promoter....and lets get it on in 2011.

Do your homework first , there has been problems with the payouts for years . Promises don't pay bills . You pay your entry fee,s you expect to be paid if you win . Bottom line ,anything less than that is UNEXCEPTIONABLE

ABP tactics

People don't respond to these type of threats. They players have almost no bargaining power in the current scenario. Promoters will just say play, or don't, or start your own tournament.

When the top players advocate for seeding an event it is only to better their odds of a payday. Just play and see who the best man is that day. They tried to strongarm the regional event here to have seeding and the response was play or don't, as it should be. Why should up and coming players be penalized by seeding. Just leave it to the luck of the draw as it should be.

Kudos to Barry for standing his ground. If anybody thinks you can get rich hosting a tournament go borrow 75K against your house and give it a try.

Sounds like a discrepancy of money is the issue here.

If any player has not been paid, then I would side on the ABP as a matter of principal.

If what Barry has stated above is true, then I would side with Barry on this issue.

One thing is for sure. Lack of communication will be detrimental to both sides and most importantly the pool community. Everything can be worked out if communication channels are opened up.

I support the player organization in concept, but from the conception it has sounded poorly organized. After a year and a half, the website was still under construction. Johnny and the boys can shoot a ball in a hole, but they need specialized direction from someone experienced in this type of organization and negotiation.

Barry, I hope you have records of all the payouts, because that would solve a multitude of issues immediately.

Sometimes both sides need to compromise for the better good of all parties. I hope wisdom will be shown from here forward.

Barry obviously has a business model for the Open that requires income from the event itself to cover the payouts at the end of the event.

He has made it work in the past, and in the worst case scenario, he has made it right when he came up short.

He is obviously willing to risk his own money every year to keep an important event going.

I'm sure he would like to have the money secured up front, as it would eliminate his own risk as well as that of the players.

But to punish him for not being fully capitalized up front, given the state of pool and the current economy, and what he has done for pool over his lifetime, is simply unacceptable.

It doesn't sound like they voted on this or anything. I predict if they try to manipulate the players they will quit the organization.

Pfft whatever, if you want off the list you must fill out form 1864 section b and have it mailed express post at your expense along with a $200 handling fee to Johnny Archer's home address. Non-US members must pay $300, $400 if you are a champ. This applies for anyone the ABP has decided to put on the list because Johnny Archer one time had a beer with another pro and mentioned in passing it would be sweet to have a player organization and that other player said "uh, yeah, maybe" after which Johnny wrote his name down and added him to "The List".

If I was one of the players who’s name was put on that list of boycotting and I never agreed to it, I would demand my name taken off it and the list republished at another press release and on the ABP web site immediately.

If it is true that names of players never asked or didn’t give the ABP permission are on the list that are boycotting the US Open it is BS and probably a crime. If this is true the ABP is over as of today. Johnnyt

Statement From Barry Behrman and Shannon Berhman Paschall – Exclusive to AZB
My daughter Shannon and I want to begin by saying thank you to all of the U.S. Open supporters. Thank you for all of your emails, texts, and calls in reference to the recent press release from the ABP in reference to boycotting the longest running and most prestigious tournament in the world, The U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. Thank you to the blindsided pool players that notified us immediately after the press release, stating that they had no knowledge that their names were published on a list supporting this boycott, as this was not their intention.

In an economy like we have today, with the highest unemployment rate with over 14 million people without income, business after business going belly up, not to mention a record number of home foreclosures and the homeless; an economy so bad that economist are bordering fortunetelling and mere speculation verse precise calculations as to when our country should normalize, we still pay all of my players. There is not 1 single person that didn't get paid in 2010, or in the history of the U.S. Open. When I wrestled in high school, there was a sign hanging on the wall with 9 words that I live by and will continue to live by, "A Winner Never Quits and a Quitter Never Wins" This is the cloth that I am cut from, I do not give up, and I will not allow others to bash me in the media as I am simply doing my very best. Have I considered quitting? Yes. In the early years I briefly thought about giving up the U.S. Open, as I lost a tremendous amount of money. I then thought of the fans, players and future players, and knew that the show must go on. In my career, I have seen all men's player organizations come and go, but the U.S. Open is still standing.

All of my life I have lived and breathed for the game of pool, I began with only 16 players in 1976 and have loved watching it grow from 16 to 256 players, Do you think that this event would still be around if the players were not actually getting paid? We all know that this cannot be the case. This will be the 36th year that the U.S. Open is hosted by me, along with my daughter for the past 10 years. I have loved every minute and can recall each match, like it was yesterday, because pool is my passion.

Almost every business has been hit by the turn in the economy and I am not immune to this flux. It costs me $15,000 just to rent the stadium seating, which is barely covered by the VIP seat sales; this is just one piece of the puzzle that is used to put on such a great tournament. I am not perfect and do not claim to be. I have made many mistakes in my career and life, but I am always trying to better myself and this sport that we supposedly all love. For 35 years now, I have built the U.S. Open with my own blood, sweat and tears, and have made sure that every single player has always received their winnings; some may have been delayed a few months, but paid none the less.

Shannon and I do not see how boycotting an event that is merely here for the players and fans of pool, as it is not a cash cow for us, is benefiting this sport or the fans who want to watch the players. I am not a wealthy man; in fact I too like some of the players am trying to simply make ends. However, I am doing everything in my power to strengthen the industry of pool. I cannot allow the U.S. Open to be threatened by individuals whom will not return a call or email. In fact, I personally called Johnny Archer 15-20 times in the past couple of weeks, and sent many emails to discuss this year's event, and not once did he answer or return any of my attempts. What kind of leader is this? I was never given the chance to acknowledge their demands, which I along with my daughter believe is completely unfair and simply "dirty pool." This is not a step in the right direction, Mr. Archer as the President, should be attempting to work with promoters instead of shutting them out, or else pool as we know it will no longer exist. I have been informed that some members of the ABP were demanding to be seeded into other events, and many made threats to walk if they were not. Promoters cannot give into bullies.

This sport is larger than just the all mighty dollar. It is a rare time for all players, both professional and amateurs, from all around the world come to test their skills against one another and become victorious, it is a great week in which fans are able to witness the skills of our industry today. Yes, it is income and a job for some, but let us not forget about the fans from around the globe that rearrange their precious lives to witness the U.S. Open. I think that many players have lost sight for their passion of this sport to have it replaced with monetary gain instead. My daughter and I by no means enjoy having to pay anyone late, and do everything in our power, even in detriment to our personal lives and business to make sure that everyone is always paid. In fact for the 2010 U.S. Open, 92 spots were paid in full, in cash, at the event.

I hope to see all of the fans and players again at the 36th Annual U.S. Open and my daughter and I will work relentlessly as usual to insure the players and fans receive our very best. We are working on television contracts and hope to have the U.S. Open broadcasted in Asia, Canada, Europe and the U.S.A., in order for the players to receive the financial recognition that they deserve. If anyone would like to contact us, please email usopen9ball@yahoo.com as we will respond.

This is unfortunate

This is really unfortunate. I believe Barry is really trying to advance the sport of billiards. It is really hard to make a living in this business. On the other hand, ABP is a union trying to protect its members. The players have been burned before, perhaps NOT by Barry, but by other organizers that did not have their ducks in a row or where just out 'n out dishonest.

This economy is putting pressure on both sides. Barry wants to continue the legacy of the US Open and it is admirable. The players want some assurances that the prize money will be there. They have families to protect and support.

I hope that Barry and ABP can arbitrate their differences.

This is just really unfortunate for both parties.

The ABP has players listed in its threat letter who aren't agreeing to boycott? Say it ain't so!

IF that's the case, the ABP's nuts just shrank 1 cup size. Name air-barreling isn't cool.
