BB players Paid !

There are some interesting comments on Scott's picture :sorry:

I want to say first, that I wish sincerely for Bonus Ball to succeed and really turn into a solid and permanent league... For all it's player's sake. All the fiasco with the BB recently has I think honestly messed with too many players' head and for that, I feel for them.

I think the interesting comment that you are referring to is what Rodney's comment which he is talking about me, and as always a little misdirected/ misquoted.

This is what Rodney said:

Wow bro. That's pretty heart felt to say the least. Ya, I wish we can succeed as well. Everything that is good for the players I'm onboard with. It's unreal how many people actually genuinely want us to be broke and not successful. Craziness. I just won the US Open 10 ball and the promoters wife told my buddy that she wished I never won......are u kidding me? Wished I neve won? How can a guy like me, who's dedicated over 25 years to this game, never said an ill word to anyone, get so disrespected? I'm so disgusted. Anybody that wishes ME ill will has definitely lost the plot. I'm probably the best player in the last couple decades that's awesome for this game. Me and Tony Robles are two of thee most respected and honorable guys ever. To say anything bad about us is lunacy. You should be ashamed of yourself.......I actually genuinely like everybody, so I'm hoping I get an apology form them and we can move on. This is so nonsense. Unreal:(

And this is what really happened!

When BB came to a halt, Rodney decided to enter the US Open Events, by that time regular registry has ended and there was late fee added to the entry. We didn't invent the late fees and it's been a standard practice. But Rodney felt that was a way for the 'Promoter to screw the players' and went ballistic on his facebook. Since then, he's taken down his post.

So, when he won it, I was not a fan of him. I told Lenny <-- His buddy, who didn't relay my exact message that "I was not happy Rodney won, I was rooting for Dennis Orcollo because all the negative stuff Rodney has been saying about us". It does not say I want pool players to be broke, but it says I favor Dennis!

For all the right reasons too! Dennis has every year, came and helped the BEF (Billiard Education Foundation) fundraiser along with many other pro players on Challenge the Pros. This year too Dennis came and gave his time to raise money (for children) 7-9 pm even though he had 5:30 am flight next morning to go to Columbia, SA for World Games!

Until his negative post on his facebook, I really liked Rodney. I've sweated his matches and hung out several times laughing and joking. But, it's hard to respect someone when someone attacks your business & loved ones.

That implies the BB players are not employees. The players are contractors that pay their withholding taxes when they file their income taxes.

That means they are hit for about $130 up front for social security and medicare. Then they will have to pay taxes. I hope they know they qualify for food stamps.

There is and has been a click in pool that is no good for the game, it's only good for those in the click. I'm not going to name names as hard core pool players know who they are and what they stand for (themselves). Even though most of them are top players pool would be way better off w/o them in the long run. Some players and promoters don't want to see change. Most players only want change that they don't have to get off their asses and work for. W/O this click of players I'd bet both sides could work together and make pro pool more profitable for all. To me IF indeed Lenny ran back to Rodney with that, accurate or exaggerated, HE is the one i most want to avoid. Shit is said about all of us all the time! Just understand that. If we all knew what was said by everyone about us, most of us would be miserable constantly. A real friend would never run back to someone with a one time comment like yours. I know im pretty much alone in this view which i have felt strongly about forever. Personally ive only had to tell one alleged friend "DONT TELL ME THAT SHIT!" Why would you want to upset someone with a useless gossip report on them?

I hope you guys did not give him (Rodney) a break on the late fees...

That is unbelievable, Sunny.

I paid for my entry into The Open back, I think, in February. Now, because BB threw a rod, they wanted in at the last second with no late fee. A joke, I say.

As a promoter I wouldn't vocalize you wanted one player to win over another, no matter what the reasoning. You are WINNING when they (the ones you don't like) are playing in your events.

On a note to Rodney - who has to state that he is one of two of the greatest guys in the pool world. First - if you have to say that about yourself then you are lacking something. Second - about 9 months ago Rodney was in St. Louis and left his ID at a local pool hall here. I am friends with his girlfriend/baby's momma and she got ahold of me all frantic that Rodney needed his iD sent to him next day because he had to get on a plane to go to a tournament and wouldn't be able to without his ID. So I went to this pool hall, picked up his ID, went to the post office and sent it to him overnight and paid for it - about $40 - out of my own pocket. Told the girlfriend don't worry about it. Never got any message or text from Rodney thanking me. He could have easily gotten my number from his girlfriend.

Last part of this story is that I am at the bar in the Rio and Rodney is there with his bonus ball pals. I am at the bar ordering the same time as Rodney and introduce myself, letting him know I am the guy that sent him his ID. He quickly says thanks, whirls and goes back to the bonus ball crew. Didn't take more than 12 seconds out of his life to talk to me, let alone offer to buy me a drink when his pockets are full from his 10 ball victory.

Yep - pool is going somewhere. I'll let you figure out where if Rodney is one of the two greatest ambassadors of the sport today.

wow. I'll buy a passing drunk a drink. What you say Rodney did (or didn't)... that's pretty chilly.

Sorry for the subject change but that kind of thing happening with the ID (and it could have been much worse) is the reason i will NEVER EVER leave my ID as security at a Pool Hall. Most of the time I say "well if you have that many thieves in here, this isnt the kind of place I want to be" and leave.

and Yes Rodney saying that is very telling-not to mention he couldn't shine Tony's shoes if you gave him the full shine kit and an instructional CD!!

Agreed. I travel all over and whenever a pool room asks for my ID, I always give them a 50 and say, in my best Sean Connery, "My name is Grant. Ulysses S. Grant." I have never once had them refuse the $50. I'd rather lose that than my ID.

Yep done that too-also will volunteer my keys if i really want to be there. I know i cant leave those behind.

If you get pulled over and for whatever reason cops are suspicious of you and you dont have ID/license, that can be the beginning of a real nightmare for you. Never ever worth leaving your ID. Every place that requires ID always has a half dozen left behind licenses behind the counter and they aint always old folks' either.

Thanks for your explanation. I pointed out the comment because I found it weird.

I think what you said to Lenny was rather naive considering your position in the event organization; even if those were your feelings.

With that being said, I find it very weird that a player that just won an event and got PAID on the spot is complaining about its promoters and praising the other "organization" that is not really paying at all (let's hope that changes soon). I honestly don't like this confrontation, less so in a public medium: it hurts pool and it's not professional.

It is my experience that late entry (or inscription) fees are a common occurrence on many types of events, not just pool tournaments. It is definitely not something done to screw the players, just a necessary measure to allow for efficient planning and budgeting.

I hope the waters return to their normal course soon.

Excuse me sir, do you have any ID? Idea about what???

I heard Rodney say he had a guy at a bar tell him he sent him an IDEA....."Idea about what" I ask? "I have no "idea" was Rodney's reply. :groucho:

Rodney Morris - Great Ambassador, just doesn't hear so well in bars. LOL

Don't blame you one bit Sunny. He sounds like a real classy person.

And even more so from Watchez's story.

Funny how stories change to suit a persons needs.

I'm sorry, I try to stay unemotional, objective and positive on this forum. I respect the views and opinions of all the AZB members and posters. With that caveat, I ask the question (that has already been asked in this thread).

Why the hell are we celebrating the fact that players got paid from a professional organization?! That is ludicrous and speaks unfortunate volumes about our billiard professionals. These guys are pros. They should be compensated fairly and timely for their tournaments and/or professional engagements and contracts as per agreed upon terms. There is no other sport that I can think of where we applaud the fact that a player is compensated by their organization as per their agreement. It is to be expected - as is the case with any other business. You provide a service, you are compensated for that service. If players don't play, sponsors don't pay, fans don't pay to attend tournaments, fans do not purchase PPV. Let's not applaud the fact that our pros got paid - I argue we should be angry that we have to applaud such a thing.

My views & opinions.
Respectfully,
- Steve Sherman

For the third or fourth time in this thread....

No one has actually been paid yet.

I do agree with you 100% on the point of your post though.

That's really a great story and completely telling. In contrast, here's one of my own.

I'm 13 and playing in my first out of town age group golf tournament. Its at Latrobe. My dad knows a guy that knows Arnold Palmer so an introduction is arranged and I'll never forgot that man looking me right in the eye while he shook my hand and made me feel as though he was as pleased to meet me as he was saying he was. That was a big moment for me, but it gets bigger.

Next day, after the first round, I'm in the locker room changing my shoes and Arnie walks right up to me and says, "how did you do out there today Kevin?" The man remembered my name. After that I watched every tournament that man played in and even traveled to a few. I still some zillion years later watch Palmer play in the Par 3 and hit the first tee shot at the Masters.

Pool? Not so much.

When you compare anyone to Arnold Palmer it's a bit tough to compete. Arnold Palmer, Jack N. Gary Player, Lee Trevino, John Daly.....they were like saints.

Wait a minute, did I really say Lee Trevino was a "saint".....well, he was married several times, but besides that he was virtually an angel.

I saw Jack Nicklaus with Steve Mizerak in West Palm Beach and he made an impression I'll never forget. Rodney's always been a perfect gentleman and I know he's been through a lot of negative situations. Judging anyone else's behavior is a tricky business, they say "if you can spot it, you surely got it"....and so it is.

We don't know what's going on in another person's life, that's why it's good to "be kind to everyone, we never know the struggle they are going through".....sometimes it's easier "said than done". 'The Game is the Teacher' - even if it's golf.

You are a smart boy CJ. Good luck in all your endeavors. I've always been told that all judgement is self-judgement, point a finger and 3 pointed back to you.

Here's a Jackism. Nicklaus is explaining his concession of a putt (sometimes described as 1 foot sometimes3) on the 18th hole last day last match to Tony Jacklin which resulted in the US and Britain (at that time) tying for the Ryder Cup with the US retaining the cup. Jack took a lot of heat "owed it to the fans owed it to his teammates etc" to make Tony finish out and have a chance to choke under pressure. Jack explains his thinking on the matter and then adds, "if you don't see it my way you just aren't thinking right" LOL. Love Jack.

Thanks

Kevin
