Has anyone gone to the bca web site and read the new rule book dated june 1, 2012 to june 1, 2014 ??? The bca has lifted the use of phenolic tips on break cues....you can now use phenolic tips on your break cue... I was told this in vegas at bca but looked it up and it's true...

Non issue for me. got rid of my phenolic tips and enjoying the better breaks and control leather has to offer.

Curious how hard a tip you use to break. I have a phenolic-tip jump/break cue, but use my playing cue to break. Lot's of people ask me why. Jump and break don't mix in my book. Do one or the other.

Break

I have 2 shafts for the my Break/jump cue, and I had a super 'dub' put onto one of shafts, and have been using it to break. The information is good to know though.

I prefer the Samsara tip over Phenolic myself... Although a BCA committee member told me they checked the Samsara and it has Resin in it...???

I was told that some non-leather tips damage the cue ball, if this is true are phenolic tips unable to do this?

The guy who informed me in Vegas who was on the committee, told me they had someone break 600 racks with the same cue ball using a Phenolic tip and it caused NO damage to the cue ball...So they decided to lift the ban on them....
Only repeating what I was told...Can't say if it's true or not...

Who cares. If you hit the balls hard on the diamond bar box with new cloth and magic racks your nuts anyhow.
I mean you can break soft to medium and have a dead ball

I have one break cue with a Samsara tip and one with a phenolic tip.

Guaranteed that the phenolic hits harder that the Samsara.

Don't know the back story but the BCAPL definitely changed the rule. From page vii:

Significant Content Changes for the 2012-2014 Edition

Equipment Specifications. The restriction on use of phenolic tips for breaking has been temporarily removed.

Just to avoid confusion - this rule change is for the BCAPL, not the BCA. The BCA Rule Book (under "equipment specifications") still states:

"The cue tip may not be of a material that can scratch or damage the addressed ball. The cue tip on any stick must be composed of a piece of specially processed leather or other fibrous or pliable material that extends the natural line of the shaft end of the cue and contacts the cue ball when the shot is executed."

So for BCA or WPA events you still need a leather tip. BCAPL and BCA are completely different entities.

This is one of those rules that can cause problems at events. The tourney officials do not inspect every cue that comes in the room. So it is up to an opponent to protest a competitors cue tip (or dress code or other such violation). And this MUST be done prior to the opening break of the match. You CANNOT wait until you are down 8-3 in a race to 9 to protest the other guys tip. If you let him break the very first rack then you have accepted his use of that equipment and you cannot protest later. To do so may land you in hot water as that may be considered unsportsmanlike conduct.

Frankly, I always consider those who try to protest equipment or dress after they are down in a match to be 'lawyers' and not pool players. These folks figure if they cannot win with their cue stick then they will do whatever is required to win by another means.

So for events such as WPA 9-ball would this rule the BK2 out as i believe that is a non leather tip? I'm fairly certain though that a lot of players will be using them.

And significance of this statement what ??????

That s just about physical given things. The Phenolic-Tip usualy is transferring more energy.
A leather-tip, no matter how hard it is pressed, absorbs always a bit more energy during the impact.

But i like my hard pressed leather tip more. til now i was not able to *like* a phenolic tip really on my breaking cue.

Of course it does but you are also giving up control.. I've used em' all and prefer control over hitting the ball harder.. Watch many of the pro's today, a vast majority of them are not breaking at close to 100% but are having great success with the controlled break.

Funny. When they banned the non-leather tips there were pages of uproar on here. Now they change it back and everyone says it don't matter to them. Johnnyt

If some tips were damaging the cue ball, I would definetely care, from the player side and the owner of the equipment. If whitey was on the last 18 inches of travel and it started tracking left or right or a combination of both I'd replace it instantly.

Odega tips

You need to try Odega tips, Wade was instrumental in the Samsara tip, and now makes his own. They are awesome. You can find him on here, ODEGA.

I have one of his tips on my break cue, and one on my jump cue.

That's because a lot of people had invested in phenolic tips.

I was pissed too and sold my Fury break cue with a phenolic tip. Now I have a BK2 and couldn't be more satisfied. For me it's more about control.

The tip I have on my breaker is a Kamui Black Hard. I also have a leather tip on my jumper, as it came with the cue, I couldn't tell you what brand it is.
