BCA Nationals and your experience

Yeah, I got to live the dream. Arrived in Vegas on 5/7 and watched the USBA 3 cushion championships at the Tropicana fron 5/7-5/10. Great stuff!

It was then on to the Riviera for the US Open 1-pocket championship. Even without having Efren there, it was a great event, and seeing the emergence of Darren Appleton as a new star in this discipline up close was great. Of course, Shane was a deserving champion, and when added to his Derby City 1-pocket, it can be said that he's the hottest 1-pocket player on the planet right now.

The US Open 10-ball was next and my first reaction was disappointment over the absence of my favorite player, Ralf Souquet. That said, the field was superstrong. To me, one of the questions coming in was whether Shane would rebound from the drubbing he took in the Derby City 10-ball event. Busty had beaten him 15-9, but the match, if my memory serves, was 14-5 at one point. Sure enough, they met very early in the event, and Shane had a bad day and was a 9-4 loser. His disgust at the end of the match was obvious, and things didn't go much better for him on the loser's side where Archer eliminated him well short of a chance to reach Saturay's final four.

Another player that I found interesting to watch was Oscar Dominguez. In his first match, he was five balls from the finish line leading 8-6 against eventual champion Orcullo, but missed and never shot again. Oscar later played NY favorite Steve Lipsky, and Steve, who played very well, broke dry at 8-8. Given a second chance, Oscar made no mistake about his runout to win the match. He then went on a fine winning streak that led him all the way to a 7/8 place finish.

Mike Dechaine was another player worth watching. He survived a nailbiter against David Alcaide when Alcaide scratched in the double hill rack and went on a nice run all the way to a fourth place finish.

Most of all, though, this tournament belonged to the Filippinos. Busty, Alex, and most of all, Dennis Orcullo, wowed me with their play. All of them had played in the nine ball event at Derby City, in which the Americans swept the medals with Shane first, Stevie second, and Dechaine third. This time it would be different, and after Busty beat Dechaine, the tournament came down to the three Fillipino superstars. Orcullo was much the best in the final against Bustamante, not missing a single ball, and offering a sampling of some of the greatest 10-ball I've ever witnessed.

Socially, I caught up with many good friends and more than a few acquaintances, but the highlight for me came early. Was having a bite with Darren Appleton when Bob Jewett, Greg Sullivan, and Ken Schuman invited us to join them. Dining with four cuesports giants, all of whom I'm lucky enough to count as friends, was a real treat for this diehard fan.

Also noteworthy was how many New Yorkers I caught up with for the first time in a while. Since my retirement in 2008, I only play pool in the daytime, so I can go a long time without seeing local pool friends I've made over the years. Alwaysnice to see them.

The most unexpected pleasure was when I ran into Cris Delagarza, now living in Switzerland, who I ran into in the Riviera gift shop and she had her lovely baby with her. A few years ago, Cris and I served together on the WPBA Board, and of course, she is well known in these AZB parts for her many fine posts. Cris has been and remains a great ambassador for our sport.

Glad to be home, and I reckon it's time to catch up on my sleep.

And it's always nice seeing you ...you looked like you were having a great time! Even at the Riv tables...

Yes, I was really having a blast! The tables were, indeed, unexpectedly generous to me on this occasion. Great seeing you as always, Robin, and glad we had a couple of opportunities to chat. You were a Hall of Famer in my book long before the BCA figured it out!

BCAPL Nationals

Watchez,

I appreciate your comments.

First the dates: The move to the Rio was not done without serious consideration. Most players and teams are embracing the changes. Those that are not happy about the changes have mostly come around when they understand the facts.

The rates will be attractive (they will be published in July sometime) and there are a lot of advantages for the Rio. Too many people are talking about something without really knowing the facts.

There are a lot of reasons for moving and we expect to have 40 dedicated mini tournament tables + more practice tables. Plus free shuttle to strip.

We are sorry July mights not work out for some - but it is only a week and I honestly feel that any who go from a 6,500 man event to an 800 man event will be VERY disappointed.

Besides, there are other things that might be happening in May that are a better option.

We will be releasing the FACTS in the near future.

2nd: I would like to hear Mark G. words on the Taiwanese situation before I comment.

We will be releasing a statement after we get the office back together - since right now everything is in boxes. Should be about a week or maybe touch longer. I talked with many of the affected parties and told them middle of next week or so. They were OK with that - so I think that all others should be to.

I am not planning on responding to a lot of opionions and suggestions at this time - we have work to do to get back up and running.

So - lets try to keep the speculation to a minimum.

The only people complaining about the July dates are the Canadians. So be it --- for everyone else, it will be a plus. And getting out of the Riviera is a bigger plus.

I would like to hear Mark G. words on the Taiwanese situation before I comment.

By the way, it’s BCAPL Nationals – not the BCA Nationals. The BCA (Billiard Congress of America) is now just a trade association and has no ties to BCAPL. The All-Taiwan Men’s Open Singles finals was a fiasco, and BCAPL did a good thing by disqualifying both players, BUT BCAPL should realize by now that only top players generally come over from other countries. They could have minimized the damage to the division with better research.

My league will not be sanctioning with BCAPL next year, as the July 17-27 dates just don’t work well with our short-summer lifestyle nor with our Spring end-of-season league scheduling. We’ll be sanctioning with ACS, as they have the best dates - May 11-17 – next year; I hear nice things about the Tropicana; Gary Benson – who used to run the BCA Natls – directs the ACS event; and the sanction fees are cheaper. I heard from a bunch of other players at Nationals their league’s will be doing the same.

Jumping off the Riviera ship probably had to be done, but choosing the Rio and being forced to late July dates due to the Rio hosting the World Series of Poker May-July was not a wise decision.

We are still going to do the BCAPL next year, but I must say you will love the ACS tournament. If they played it on Diamonds it would be perfect. The Tropicana is a great Hotel now. Much nicer than either the Riviera or the Rio for that matter.
As a side note about the Rio, it is not advisable to walk to the strip from the hotel. We did it during the day and saw two junkies picking up tinfoil off of the street and putting it in their mouths trying to get the remnant drugs out of the foil.

Once again I had a great show...my patience sometime amazes me! Actually, I love teaching the Jump Shot (especially when I hear I've never jumped a ball in my life) everyone seemed to understand what I showed them. Mastering the Jump Shot DVD, Frogs and Tadpoles...
Jerry's DVD plus the Bobble Ball... sold lots of product and that for sure was a blessing!
Now I'm home and feel every bit of the aches and pains of standing on my feet for so long...man I'm getting OLD!

Robin, you sweetheart you, thanks for showing an old dog a new trick. Being from the old school, jumping was something I felt I couldn't learn. Thanks for the five minute lesson you game me now it's something I can add to my arsenal. Your are truly a great teacher. thanks again, your friend Frank.

Excellent suggestion. Speculation without facts would be, well, irresponsible. Don't you agree?

I'm sure you and your staff did the best you could when the situation presented itself. In fact, I don't know anyone who wouldn't.

Wasn't there. I did hear that a nice guy who plays out of The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon did well...pulling a 4th place. If Luke Thomas keeps this up he might become known outside of our little pond.

Hey all, just wanted to post up a few thoughts and see how others experience was at the BCAPL National Championships these last couple weeks.

I had a pretty good experience again this year, although I should have practiced much more. Those 7 foot Diamonds take some getting used to! I felt that I shot much better than last year, and if it wasn't for some costly mistakes on my end that were completely avoidable (making the 8 ball and scratching twice, etc.) I should have at least placed in the money for the Men's Open. :)

Didn't see as many pros this time around, maybe it just because I wasn't at the Riviera as much as I have been the last couple times I went.

My highlight was probably the last match I played, even though I lost I was strangely at ease and not worried in the least that I was losing. I was just happy to be playing. I had some good conversation with the gentleman I was playing and his friend (who shot in the Super Seniors I believe) and they both paid me a great compliment for my honesty and integrity.

The first game my opponent scratched on the break. So naturally I have BIH, and I'm in the midst of my practice stroke about to shoot when I barely touch the CB with my tip. I hesitate for a second, waiting for him to call foul, but only silence..... Realizing he hadn't seen what happened, I stood up from the shot, walked over to him and told him that I fouled and it was his BIH. He was a bit surprised I think, and continued on with his turn.

Afterwards, my GF told me that they were speaking very highly of me and my actions. It made me feel pretty good to know that my integrity was appreciated so much.

Anyways, just wanted to share that, sorry for the long winded post lol. I might get flamed for saying this, but I don't care: Winning isn't always everything at the pool table. I'd rather have the respect from my opponent and know that I played them an honest game :)

It takes a lifetime to earn honor and seconds to give it away...your honesty is its own reward and always refreshing to behold in others!

Don't let that ONE post from that guy get to you. He's only posted once on this forum anyway.

As for the Taiwanese players, it was the talk of the tourney. People were debating on if the top two in the Open should get paid, or if they shouldn't.

Well run event again, Mark! Can't wait til next year :)

If the top two were allowed to enter the Open division and also allowed to finish the tournament then they should get paid.
The top 50 or maybe top 100 players in the Open are all Advanced to Master players anyway.

The only way I see them not getting paid is if they pulled a Caesar Morales move.

Too many people are talking about something without really knowing the facts.” Really, Mark?! I’ve listened to your “facts” and they come across more like “spin” than “facts.” I turned in my survey in the past and made it abundantly clear, and I believe I speak for many leagues. My league ends in late March/early April every year. Why would we want to wait around and trudge out to the desert three months later…in JULY!!! A lot of my local players aren’t even playing pool during that time. Your response of “…but it is only a week” smacks of naivete about your own league players. It’s only a week…in JULY! Mid-May dates worked great for every league. That’s why the tourney grew to the proportions it has. It’s the perfect dates that evolved over many years and took into account accommodation of most local league schedules.

I’m happy you’ve convinced other leagues to come out in July. I’d hate to see the BCAPL Nationals go down, but I’m guessing your numbers will be suffering next year at the Rio. We attended the old BCA Nationals when it had 9,000 players (I think it was 2004 before you bought the league system), and I can honestly say size doesn’t have to matter a lot if your main goal is to take a vacation and have a good time.

VNEA Natls at Bally’s is much smaller than BCAPL Natls, but they hold some functions that players enjoy that BCAPL does not match.

While at the BCAPL Nationals, we heard some nice things about the ACS tourney that some players who attended told us. Players really seem to enjoy the event a lot. It may be smaller, but it’s run by the same folks who used to run the BCA Nationals when it was a much larger event than it is now with BCAPL. And you can’t beat ACS’s dates next year – May 11-17! Size doesn’t matter if we can play a lot of pool and have a good time. Good luck with the BCAPL Nationals in July 2013, but our league is bowing out and going with ACS.

You make it seem like your league speaks for others? If the BCAPL heard from the survey responses that May was best, then they would have stayed with May.

Is it not simple to just change your league months if the July date is an issue? Wait, that's not right of me to ask.

I attended the ACS two weeks ago, and the BCAPL last week. With the move to The Rio, the date change has not even bothered me at all for the BCAPL. I'm very confused why this is so bothersome.

Me too. Just add an extra session to this league year to get on track, then run a new schedule that works better for a July trip, no biggie.

Certainly sounds like it would not be advisable to walk to the strip from the Rio.

Have you ever been in Vegas in July??? The heat is unbearable, and unless you plan on staying in the Rio the whole time you're there it is unavoidable.

Because 102 in May is so much cooler than 107 in July.

All the July dates do is take out the off chance you catch a cool spell in May. I dont play leagues so my opinion doesnt really matter anyway but I would prefer the Rio to the Riv even if they had to play in January....or February...or any other month of the year.

Like anything else...some will like it, some will tolerate it and some will say its the end of the world.

The Rio has 2 great Buffets, but the lines are long because of it.

There are shuttles to the strip every 30 min.

The Gold Coast Casino is right next to the Rio and the rooms may cost less.

The Palm has the Playboy Club across the street.

Guys,

Played in both the ACS and BCAPL events. Yes, John Lewis and Gary Benson do run a great event. Smaller but really fun. The Valley tables played just fine. Even with the "weighted" cue ball. Because of the size of the event, making small time adjustments for the players was easy.

How can anyone fault the job Bad Boys does for the BCAPL? Not sure what time you play? Just go on line. At the Riv? Check the computer screens and type your name in. Pay outs? Right on the bottom of your score sheets. Way too many pluses to name.

Next year it is my intent to play in the ACS, VNEA AND BCAPL. If my local team wins the "free" trip I'll be out for the APA event as well. Yes, Vegas is stupid hot in July. As the locals say, "Everywhere you go, there is air conditioning". In reality, how much time do most people really spend outside during the tournaments? If the temperature is such a big problem, why does the APA play in August? Its really, really stupid hot then!!!! They bring more players to Vegas than anyone.

Gee Gonzo, if you really enjoyed playing BCAPL, why not sanction with both leagues? We do at the Las Vegas Cue Club. Then you and your league players can decide which event to play in. Even better, play in both! Each year I play in seven sanctioned BCAPL leagues. Cost me a whole $15. Adding the ACS is another $10. Seems cheap to me!
