Hi,

Made with birdseye and ebony

I hung up a $1200 Schon after playing with a $150 sneaky made by Jack Kompan of Mystick Cues out of San Antonio. His number is (210) 404-9852. Also, he makes a great sneaky break cue called "the ball buster".

Al Romero / Bob Frey

I second the motion for the Bob Frey Sneaky Pete. Not a true SP, though, in that it has joint collars and a synthetic white butt cap. I have heard that "Little Al" Romero, who works out of Hard Times in Bellflower, CA, also makes great SPs, but I haven't seen or played with one.
If you live in the east see Bob Frey. If you live in the west see Al Romero. I totally agree with Fliedout.

SP's

I played 19 years with a Huebler SP and liked it a lot.
One of the cues I have now is a Shurtz SP with SS joint,
and I really like it, excellent balance and feel. Bob Owen,
Gabe's Dad, makes them. Used to be prices for SP's from
Bob was $160 for wood-to-wood, $170 for phenolic joint,
and $190 for Stainless Steel joint. Look just like house
cue otherwise. Call 1-316-269-3844 and ask for Bob, here
in Wichita.

I'm waiting for one from Josey right now. I think they're awesome.

Well my Josey "sneaky pete" came. I've been buying cues for a while, keeping the ones that I like best. So I've got some other real fine hitting cues--the top of my list has a Scruggs pete, a schon, two Diviney petes, a Sherm, a Layani, and a Schuler.

The Joseys just leaped over the pack.

The two cues have nearly identical hits--the feeling of the wrap is the main difference. They are stiff but not out of this world stiff. I like the sound feedback. It seems clean and crisp, at one frequency like a good percussion instrument. There is quite a lot of feedback to the rear hand--in a good way to me.

Are there pics of the rest of your collection anywhere? Would love to see the Divineys and the Schuler, esp.

Since my last post in this thread i have aquired a James White ebony sneaky with a butterfly in the butt that is the best sneaky hands down i have evr played with and i have had some petes in my collection.............:D

i got a john guffey sp, which was a real steal at $ 200 and something considering its hit and playbility....
i often take it with me on business trips as i don#t want to take my JW or any of my fancier Novas to unknown halls

Favorite SP

I feel that the TS SP cues hit extremely well. If you pay attention you can find a good used TS SP on Ebay for $350 to $400. For the $$$ investment I don't think you can go wrong here.

If you want to spend less $$$ I would look at Mike Stacey's SP. I have a J/B/P cue of Mike's and the 3/8-11 pin hits very nice too! In time I think Mike's cues should appreciate in value.

Al Romero makes a very nice looking SP but I didn't like the way it hit!?

GOOD LUCK! ;)

Another SP to consider

I also feel that Pat Diveney makes an awesome playing cue. He is better known for his "Butterfly" cues. Pat uses a radial pin which hits nice too!

Here is a fancier version.....gorgeous work Pat! :)

Happy Hunting!!! ;)

what exactly makes the scruggs sneaky so nice? Are they highly valued becasue he doesn't make them anymore?

Zylr Sneaky Petes. They play great and are gaining in value. The downside is you have to wait 6 months to a year to get one from Kerry and they cost $500-$600 with one shaft and a low gloss finish.

For affordable SP's that play very well I recommend Ned Morris. The Josey SP's and Diveney's that I have hit with played very well too.

Sneakys

Scruggs and Zylr are the two best hitting sneaky's ive ever tried. As for reasonably priced Ive heard good things about Mike Stacey, Bludworth, and Al Romero. As for rarely seen Ive heard great things about Kikel and Nitti sneakys.

Zylr, Scruggs and Prewitt for me.
Jim Buss made some nice sneakies as well.
Zylr is the only one I know who makes them with staghorn collars.

I currently have a Scruggs sneaky on Ebay (Item# 7212337465) with a starting bid under $300 that you might be interested in. I also have two Zylrs, which might possibly (as previously mentioned) be the best sneakies available. PM me if you would like more info. on the Z's...

that's why i hooked up with keith years ago because his work is not only phenomenal but the end result is always consistent. the hit of his cues from $300 to $10,000 are the same and as well they should be. you're also right about the "frequency" which produces the controlled feel on the rear hand. i'm glad we share the same thoughts on Keith's cues

Pat Diveney. For 300-350 you will simply not find more cue for the money period. The butterfly splices really set the cues off and they all play. I've owned several and they are all good players and people will come from accross the room to see what you're holding. I realize that's not the idea of a Sneaky Pete, but I see less and less true sneakys these days. Pat is a super nice guy to deal with and will do anything to accommodate your request no-matter how strange. The hit is nice and crisp with an amazing amount of touch and feel, not too stiff or loose, just really moves the ball predictably. I agree with many of the other posters suggestions as well, but buying a new cue from the builder is how it should be done, you will usually be much happier with the experience and it gives you the chance to get the cue just like you want it.
