Best Golfer Amongst Pro Pool Players?

Shawn Putnam mentioned on a TAR dvd that he considered John Schmidt the best golfer, with Johnny second, and himself (Putnam) third. Shawn said he was a scratch golfer.

He thought there were 4-5 guys just below that who played close to each other.

I know Corey, CJ Wiley and Earl play, but I'm not sure how good. I don't think I've ever heard of any gambling match stories involving any of these players.

Anyone have any golf stories about these guys or guesses who the other four are?

Kim Davenport.....Don't know his handicap now but he will play for $1,000 a hole...Won $60,000 in Hawaii a few years back after a pool tournament...Will gamble at golf with just about anyone....

Not in any way a flame or a challenge.......just a genuine question for clarification which the insertion of the word 'handicap' brought to mind........

Do you mean he will gamble with any pro pool player with all players starting off scratch?

I saw that too, but I interpreted "handicap" as "how good he is".

I was also thinking how loosely the term "scratch" is used when I read the first post. It's just funny. No disrespect at all to the OP, but the term gets thrown around a lot of times to include anyone that breaks 80. :D

Nick Varner is a very good golfer. I have golfed with quite a few of the professionals, I think Jeremy Jones is a good golfer. I know CJ is good. My vote ends up on Earl, he's the best........SPF=randyg

I have heard great things about Dennis Searing's golf game.

I know nothing about the game, however, but I need learn how to play.

This thread is worthless without handicaps! :D

If Shawn is Scratch, and John and Johnny are better, that means they must be + Handicappers...that is strong. When you get into the +2 to +4 range you are talking Nationwide Tour level, +4 and above is PGA Tour level.

I would like to hear from someone who actually knows what these guys handicaps are.

I have played with Corey, Johnny, Gabe, Shannon, Stevie, and Mike Coltrain. Corey went to Butch Harmons school and David Ledbetters school and he is a good golfer. Johnny is also very good. Gabe and Shannon, not so much. Stevie and Coltrain are both fair. I've never played with John Schmidt but we have talked about it several times. I would play any one of them even for the cash. I would especially like to try Shawn Putnam some if anyone can set that up.

I always like the story i heard about Corey and Johnny getting into it. From what I understand (and i'm sure there are a few others here who know the full story and can give greater details) Johnny challenged Corey to a doubles match and Johnny told Corey he could bring anyone he wants. Well i guess Corey got a buddy of his who plays on the Nationwide tour and just lit them up. I was told Johnny was thoroughly pissed and went off. I've been told thats why Corey and Johnny dont get along the best, but thats hear say. Anyone else have details on this match?

I've got a cool story that Johnny told me about playing golf with Keith McCready. He said it was at his country club, a really swanky club in Atlanta. I think he said Brookstone CC but I'm not 100% on that.

Anyway, their 4some was waiting on the first tee and Keith was nowhere to be found. It was their turn to tee off and Johnny looks up and here comes Keith through the parking lot with a 12 pack of beer. By now, Johnny and the other 3 have hit their balls and there are other foursomes waiting on the tee. Johnny says,"Keith, come on we've already hit, it's your turn, hurry up".

Keith puts the beer in the cart and gets his club. He asks Johnny if he has a glove he can borrow, and Johnny tells him no and to get up there and hit because people are waiting. Keith then sits down on a rock beside the tee and starts taking his shoe off. Johnny says, "What the hell are you doing?" Keith then removes his sock and places it on his hand to use as a glove. He put his shoe back on and teed off. Johnny said he just put his head down, got in the cart and rode off. lol

When I lived in N.C. Earl was my neighbor, and golf buddy for 6 years.

Got a call early one morning from Earl, he says "c'mon up to the clubhouse, we got 3, need 1 more, can you make it?"

Sure..why not.

I get there, and it's Earl, Johhny, Kim, and me. Kim and Johnny had been on a east coast golf swing, and we're passing thru town heading back home to Atlanta.

We played Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. It was our home course, and lived in the neighborhood. Really tough Donald Ross (Pinehurst)course, with dome greens where your ball will roll off the green in all directions.

Earl and Johhny both played to about a 2 handicap back (8 yrs ago) then. Kim was about a 6, I do believe.

We already have some golf planned after the 'Shootout' tourny here in a couple weeks. Earl's coming to Tucson to stay with me for a week or so. I'm going to show him some real golf, Arizona style!!

Pool and golf....nonstop for 2 weeks.

The Wife purchased air yesterday, she's flying to see our Daughter in Ca. during the same time frame....so no interruptions at all.

Looking forward to it!

Rick S.

P.S. Earl told me he drove a 355 yd green day before yesterday.

The golfer that Corey brought wouldn't be Mike Emory would it? If this was a couple of years ago I think that is probably who he got. I have known Mike for a few years and he was at DCC a couple of years ago. We had a good time.

If the thread was about which pro pool player has the lowest official golf handicap then their handicaps would be the only relevant factor as to who has that honour.

However as far as proving which one is the best golfer goes their handicaps would only be one of several factors to be taken into consideration. How current and how diligently maintained those handicaps are would also have to be factored in. With pool players apparent "speed" always has to be viewed with caution;)

It might well be the case that one is the best at match play whereas another is the best at stroke play. There may be a history of playing each other which is a pointer to who is the best.

The best solution to the question would of course be an appropriate tournament. Germ of a larger idea there.....

How about an AZB golf tournament over say 36 or 54 holes at which any AZB'er can enter (handicap ballot if over subscribed), the best aggregate gross score taking all the entry money (say something like $500 - $1,000 per man put in the pot, pay your own green fees separate) and the highest finishing pool pro in the field taking the title of "Champion Pro Pool Playing Golfer"?

Perhaps limit entries to pro pool players and amateur golfers with a registered user name on AZB before say 31 March 2008 to keep out any opportunistic money chasing golf sharks with no interest in this community.

Step forward one of you top organisers.......unless you're all willing to come here in which case I'd organise it;) :)

hi

ive only played under 8 rounds in 3 years as i have no membership anymore.so i would think im not in the top 3 anymore.

The only way you would find out is to hold a 4 round tournament where they all played the same course.

Frankly....and no disrespect to any of them as they all sound like well above average golfers, but I take very little stock in any handicap.

Although the handicap system is supposed to take into account the course difficulty etc. etc. the fact is that hardly any course represents anything close to what a PGA pro is going to play on.

Even Club Professionals that are listed as scratch or +1 that play mini tour events are not really scratch when you see thier scores poste on a PGA set up course.

In pool you can play on the exact same equipment that the PROs play on...(you can even have one in your house)....In golf very few actually get to test thier skills on the same course (conditions) that a PGA professional would play on......You can (say) you play on the same course...but you are not really...;)

I would have to bet against any of them breaking 80 if they were to tee off with the PGA pros at Agusta....Heck there are probably quite a few +1 handicaps (on paper) out in the world that would have a tough time just legally finishing a round at Agusta....;) :)

Johnny is hanging around after the shoot out also, GOLD CANYON BABY!

Just because I like to gamble... any of the pros listed here have action. $1000 they can't shoot par on a "real" course (must have a tougher slope rating and yardage, not some local chip/putt).

I'll drive around in the cart drinking beer and come along for the ride. If they blow it, they can re-start the bet from the first hole. Must play at least two rounds.
