Just thought I would post this list of latest odds from UK betting site, Stan James. I'm not trying to get people to bet, just thought it would make an interestnig discussion.

Site members want to back themselves? I thought the odds were done reasonably well but there may be some bargains on offer for those of you who really know your 8-ball. I believe Stan James is a UK bookie and he might have a few of these guys and gals at too generous odds!

Van Den Berg at 200/1??? Worth a dime of anyone's hard-earned cash surely.

For a UK bookie they don't have much of a clue do they! Ronnie at 50/1 but Appleton & Hill at 200/1? I know where my money would be going in a game of 8 ball!

Does anyone know of any bookies offering bets other than for outright winner? Like winning groups or getting through the group etc.

Allison Fisher and LJJ both at 350-1??? I think the odds would be much better for one than the other.
Jeff Abernathy at 200-1 but Steve Moore at 300-1????
That's just a couple things I noticed that seem a bit off. Also notice how all the women are at the bottom of the list.
I think it's pretty good at the top of the list, but starts to lose it after about the first 20 or so names.
Steve

Siegel at 150 to 1? Ok, I know that he did not play well in the finals of the KOH but that seems VERY low to me. A propostion bet on who's coming out of which bracket seems like the right way to go.

O'Sullivan is rated too low. For sure I would not put Allison Fisher and LJJ at the same odds. Sorry LJJ but I have not seen you play to Allison's level.

They're new at this. Seems like now is the time to really take advantage of it.

A lot of people seem to think that the odds are based strictly on who the bookmakers think has the best chance to win the tournament.

A lot of the science of bookmaking deals with attracting bets. In the NFL the bookmakers know that there are a lot of Cowboys fans who like to bet on the Cowboys so they set the Cowboys odds lower than they deserve so that they don't have too much bet on the Cowboys and take a bath if the Cowboys lose.

That is probably why a guy like Ronnie O. has such low odds on him. If they set his odds at 150/1 or 200/1 they would have a lot of people in the UK taking a flyer on him and if he managed to win they would probably lose a lot of money. If 50/1 is too low and they don't get much money bet on him they will increase his odds.

I wish I could bet on the Stan James website, but I'm currently on the road, about 20 minutes from the Indiana-Ohio State line at a Holiday Inn Express. They actually have a HIGH-SPEED computer here in the lobby. Man, Ohio sure is FLAT, with lots of cows and corn fields.

Actually, those are GREAT lines for betting folks and provide an opportunity make a little jingle.

I heard it through the grapevine that Sweden's Marcus Chamat was a consultant to Stan James for making the lines for the World Pool Championship last year. Whoever is the consultant this year at Stan James, placing Larry Nevel at those odds is an excellent chance to cash in. He's hitting 'em GREAT, as evidenced by his qualifier wins. Stan James, et al, may be VERY FAMILIAR with international players' capabilities, but they ain't gotta a clue about the American sharp-shooters, Larry Nevel being the perfect example.

If I were inclined to make a wager, I'd hurry NOW before the man behind the curtain at Stan James changes those lines. There's some good buys, IMHO! :D

Well, in the words of Wilile Nelson, I'm on the road again and loving it!:)

Maybe Larry Nevel was the consultant. ;)

Didn't Pagulayan bet a boat load of money on himself before the start of the 2004 WPC? ;) :) ;)

I sure as heck hope he did not bet against himself ! That would be suspicious to say the least ! I wonder what Pete Rose would have to say about all this .... hmmmmmmmm.

Dave

I know that Rafael has been out of circulation for a while... but at 600-1... that's crazy IMO.

I find it interesting that when Thorsten Hohmann won the World 9 Ball Championships in 2003 he was 1000-1 (yes that is 3 zeros) but the longest odds for the IPT NA Open is 750-1?

I would have thought that some of the players in the NA Open field could easily go for 1000-1 or more, but then I guess there is a limit as to what this bookmaker will offer and it might just be 750-1 for a 200 player pool tournament!

Wish I had bet on Toastie in 2003 :)

Glad I got my money on Van Den Berg at 200/1 - he's 100/1 now I see! Odds seem to be changing quickly - maybe there is a fair amount of betting going on.

As pointed out above, this might be a chance to catch the bookie out before they get a grip on what's going on!.

I want someone to tell me that they have experience with this book. I would like to open an account, but they are in the UK and everything is online only?

Can anyone REALLY vouch for their integrity, speaking from experience? Anyone actually been paid?

I see several players on this list of odds that are WAY out of line.

PetreeCues, the Stan James bookmaking Group is a multi-million pound/dollar organisation with hundreds of thousands of account holders, many of whom bet by telephone using established credit accounts or debit cards or cash deposit accounts or by credit card. They also have offices for walk-in clients to bet in cash. The Stan James Group has been in existence for a very long time.

The specific online betting arm of the group is newer than the rest of the Group companies, basically because all online betting firms are relatively new compared to more traditional betting mediums, but it is already very well established as reliable. The notion of any arm of the Stan James group ever failing to pay out on a bona-fide winning bet is so remote a possibility as to be almost absurd.Any hit they might take in the form of losing bets in any one market (and the IPT market will be infinitesmally small compared to their other betting markets, any winnings at all by anyone betting in the IPT will be no more than a mosquito bite to Stan James) will be swiftly made up elsewhere.Any failure to pay out on a bona-fide winning bet (even if it is hundreds of thousands of pounds/dollars) would cost them much much more in lost future business.Given that the nature of their business is basically a licence to legally print money they are never ever going to take that chance.

Furthermore in any case all reputable large online betting firms, including Stan James, have limits up to which they will lay any particular runner in any particular 'race' as anyone trying to place several hundred on a 500/1 shot in the IPT will quickly find out.Sometimes they might be willing to forego those limits for particular high volume clients, especially if the client has a history of regularly losing.

To them, taking bets is much more of a mathematics exercise than a gambling risk, though not completely of course,as we have discussed at length in another forum.

Finally,of course there will be some runners in the IPT race at higher odds than someone might have expected them to be and therefore a 'bargain buy',but when it boils down to it the attractiveness of the odds on any particular player is solely a matter of opinion in the eye of the beholder. What is not a matter of opinion but a stone cold hard indisputable fact is that these odds, taken as a cumulative total for all the runners, are not at all generous to the punter and equate to a huge percentage for the book way above the usual betting market percentages. That is probably deliberate on Stan James' part for the very reason that some people have already highlighted in other contexts ie the firm's inexperience in the pool betting market.Inexperienced in the pool scene they might be,inexperienced at running a profitable book they are not and stupid they are most cetainly not.The skinny overall odds they are offering will of course in part help to balance/fund a proportion of any liabilities they might incur on any particular player as a result of their inexperience in this market;)

I could have sworn I saw Kelly Fisher at the Orlando, FLorida tournament but her name is not on the 200. Then again I swore I put my glasses by the computer this morning, but they were on my head. Johnnyt
