biased Articles

Being someone who has written for much of my professional life in one form or another, I did not read any bias or anything that was mentioned either.

Dont you love how certain people who are friends with others make the articles read a certain way. For i have lost 2 times on hill hill yet the articles write on how someone easily beat me when i hooked myself on a 5 ball. WELL i GUESS IT COMES DOWN TO THOSE WHO CANT PLAY WRITE ARTICLES. Also when i do good it is because others werent there come on. Where is the article that says the onbly reason someone wins is because of rolls, RIGHT kRISTIE, learn to play before u learn to judge us.

Whoa, don't blame Kristie for that! I wrote that article. It took me a few times reading your post to figure out who you are and what tournament you're talking about, but then it all came together.

I sincerely apologize for hurting your feelings. That definitely was not my intention. I also was not trying to favor any certain person, I was merely trying to add some color to the story. You, of all people, should know about color since you're probably the most colorful player on that tour.

You know I like you a bunch, girl. I would never intentionally do anything to hurt you. Please don't get all angry and leave the tour. They need you as a player, and I need you as a friend.

Now we know, and knowing is half the battle: GI Joe!

Poolgirl,

I understand your beef... I tell you something that happened that was sort of funny and awkward. I recently went to a tournament out of town, and finished high and definitely crossing a path with the event winner.

Called my hubby at home and told him how I did and few days later he asks, "Hey, I saw the article on AZ about the tourney you went and your name was not in that article anywhere... Funniest thing is when I clicked on the pay outs, it listed your finish but just not in the article. Didn't you play the winner? Article recapped all match except yours?" He then added jokingly, "I was starting to wonder if you really went to a tourney."

Well, my point was trying to lighten your mood about the way your match was improperly portrayed in the article... Shit happens but the game must go on :)

I will apologize to you, too, since I'm pretty sure I'm the culprit who wrote the article you mentioned, as well.:o

If I do any more write-ups for that tour in the future, I will try to be more careful for everyone's sake.

What, news sites are biased? Wow, this must just be a pool thing since every other newspaper/website/news channel/etc is always completely fair and balanced...

Roger,

No need to apologize, It really didn't bother me at all. Only way for me to be upset is if "I" was the winner and didn't get mentioned or the other people received higher praise after I had defeated them. I think the write ups are generally about the location, sponsor, along with couple high lights, but mainly should be about the event winner.

I didn't care my name was left out and actually I thought Kristie (whom I thought wrote the article at the time) was being nice to me by not posting my poor score for that match, LOL.

No, I didn't bring up that article to complain, but trying to show poolgirl that little things get left out in articles sometimes and it's not a big deal. There will be more if you play well.

Good job on the article"s" and thanks for helping out, Roger:wink:

Poolgirl,
Since you now know the real author of the article, you owe "Kristie Ortega" an apology on two counts.
First....She did not write the article
Second: She knows how to play pool!!!!!!
There are many SoCal players that will confirm her ability
She has won a WPBA Amateur Natl. Championships, plus placed 7th/8th in a WPBA pro event.
So the next time, you want to call someone out like that; You should get your information correct and your facts straight.

Maybe you could volunteer and help out. Roger has !!!!!
There's alot of work that goes into putting together a tour. Once you get involved maybe your attitude would change abit. Plus you will learn to appreciate how much effort there is in every event. Yes its a thankless job...I should know---I never get mentioned!

I'm torn on this. I don't think she owes an apology for her feelings. She may apologize for thinking it was Kristie and posting that it was her (and her comments about Kristie), but she doesn't need to apologize for the way she felt. (I realize what you are asking, but imo you are getting on to someone for sharing their feelings....while I realize you are defending Kristie at the same time. See why I'm torn?)

She vented and was upset. Yes, most people only tell their friends and not post their hurt on the forums, but she was obviously very hurt to go to this extreme imo.

BTW Roger, it was very big of you to apologize. As I said in my first post - it prolly wasn't intentional. We writers try to write the facts and not everyone is happy, but it's never intentional if we hurt someone's feelings.

The best thing you can do is let it roll off your back, getting mad does not serve you in anyway, shape, or form. Your day will come with practice and control of your emotions, or you will destroy all you have worked for by allowing them to get under your skin.

The best thing you can do and the thing that will effect your critics the most is to just laugh at them. I know for a fact and without any doubt that it will destroy them inside, and once they find out that your better than playing those little games and that they no longer bother you, they will find some one else to attempt to intimidate.

Good luck, and remember for no reason at all when these people address you in any way just laugh at them. If they get enough courage to ask what is so funny look them straight in the eye and tell them that you are laughing at them!!!!!!!!!:)

Roger, you are a stand up guy and I am certain that any comments that came from you were not intended to be offensive to anyone.

For the record, I think Roger's articles are fine. I still don't see what the OP got so upset over and blowing it out of proportion.

No where in the article does Roger imply that her wins were due to rolls...

I once beat a guy 9-0 at a tournament in two innings. He was , at the time, on the cover of 2 major pool mags. On the last day of the tournament he beat me 7-2 on the one loss side and went on to win it all. When the article came out in the magazine it listed the players he had wins over and "a 7-0 spanking" of me. It was 7-2. It never mentioned that he had taken a 9-0 loss, or much less called it a "spanking". I think it is even more impressive that he went on to win after that. Kudos to him ! The article never mentioned the loss.

After a series of impressive results and high-'ish' finishes on the British tour, I mentioned an amateur player's name within a tournament report stating this fact, something along the lines of, 'he's a player that none of the pros will want to see in their half of the draw'...nothing fancy, nothing he didn't warrant, I just thought it was relevant to include.

Two years later I was playing in a small comp and me and this player, who had been absent from 'the scene' for a while, found ourselves outside having a smoke. We got chatting and he brought up the article and said, in a friendly way I have to say, "That was the worst thing that could've happened to me". He told me that in the events that followed, he felt as though the top players no longer underestimated him and he felt a certain amount of pressure to keep his run of good form going. Looking back, his results had indeed dipped following that write-up.

I guess the point is this; maybe it's not such a bad thing to be left out of the write-up sometimes and you might even have found an added incentive to make sure your name is in the headline next time instead of being an also-ran. The truest story will always be found in the results...and you're always the author there.

Pool writers have the problem of needing to briefly recap the action unfolding in front of them on 16 tables at once. While someone is talking in their ear and their phones are vibrating. We just cannot follow the action in detail the way many wish we could. And at the end what we have to refer to is scores. We cannot say that A player 'beat' B player over and over, so we have to substitute 'destroyed', 'rolled over', 'decapitated', etc for the word 'beat'. Many times the verb does not accurately reflect the actual table play. We cannot be expected to see every lucky roll that someone gets. Only when it gets down to the final table and the distractions are lessened can we actually watch an entire match. I think you will find that the Semi's and final's are usually written up fairly well since those matches can actually be watched. But do not worry too much about the strength of the verb's used. Remember that the writer is usually posting the story very quickly (sometimes within five to ten minutes of the final ball) and rarely has the time for any actual crafting of the story.

those of us not in the know would like a link to the article in question so we can see what all the hubbub is about...Please.
