Big Props to Barry!!

Not to be rude but no woman has a chance to snap off the US Open. It's winner break from the box. They just can't get there but they can beat a few champs along the way for sure.

Just for the hell of it.....I'll make you a side bet, naw....I ain't gonna make ya rich.....but I wanna be able to say I sweated Jasmin in the first US open that allowed women....lol....I'll put up $10 on a bet that Jasmin advances further than Johnny A......Dan

9 Ball Open to Allow Women

If there was ever a reason to attend this event...this would be a good reason. Allowing women to participate will add a different dimension to what would be at time some lack luster events. I'm certain when the matches starring the women with name recognition are on deck to start...they'll draw some big crowds. Kudos to Barry!!!

Like Sarah said in her post, I'd check with the WPBA to make sure they get sanctioned.

that sanction thing is bullshit, if the girls were making solid $$$ on their tour say $200,000-$1,000,000 yr then they might have a case for sanctions, but when they are making what they make, they should be allowed to do what ever is necessary to earn a living,

As for the girls in the US Open thats a tough tournment to win, Earl, Nick Mika have won mutiple times and perhaps a couple others, but how many champions havent won it?? Jasmin has a legit chance from what I seen. I would love to see Sarah finish high or win, its not likely, its not likely I would either thats not a knock its just a fact. But I hope Sarah plays in it and plays the best she ever has and finishes high, if she did win It would be a great feat in pool that would stand a long test of time. best of luck to you

I think its awesome.

Some people will watch to see the women kick butt, some will watch to see them fail, but it should definitely get people watching. That is a good thing.

-First off, I think it's a shame when the field has not been full in the past. I don't like seeing byes in an event like this. The more entries the better!

-Secondly, I think it's a tragedy when ANYONE is excluded from an OPEN event that wanted to play.

-Finally, I think the players AND spectators will love to have the women play with the men .... and if there are some top finishing women, all the better!

I think this is great!

Women should have been in a long time ago......if nothing else it adds more money to the pot, not saying the men will always win but any added funds are a plus and it will make it more interesting.

I would like to send a shout out to JAY HELFERT, I know he was one of the first to go to Barry about getting the women involved.
I personally heard him asking the woman at the last WPBA event if they were interested in playing in the U.S OPEN.

Thank you sir for pushing for this to happen and good for Barry for making it happen.

As for sanctioning i'm sure Barry will have to pay a Sanctioning fee but lets hope having the women involved will make that back and more.

As for a woman winning it, I personally don't think it will happen with break from the box and winner break, But you never know and I wish all the woman well.

Without naming names were there a lot of women saying they would play? Johnnyt

Well...
I have personally watched Karen bust up Mika on the JOSS and almost make him cry. (By the way GMAC, JOSS is also winner breaks)
She's beaten a lot of the top men that ever played on that tour and won her fair share of events over the years.
Other names names like Rempe, Zuglan, Lapena, Saez, San Souci, Hernandez, Basavich, Korsiak, Immonen, Sambajon, Vierra come to mind, as staples of that tour back then.

So it's not like she is totally unprepared to compete with men.
I don't know if any woman is capable at this point of winning the whole thing, but i would fully expect some "upsets" to happen vs. some of the top women along the way to finding out.

Actually, i think that Karen plays WAY better against the men, then she ever did against the women, but that's just my own personal opinion.

It would also be interesting to see how many new and improved sharking techniques will surface at the Open, when some men are getting their nuts BBQed by some female and are facing possible elimination.
We all know that some of the egos out there, aren't going to be able to fade that at all.

It will be entertaining to say the least.

Barry made a great decision. Can't wait to get there (this will be my 16th year).

IF one of the women wins it, I would bet it will be reported on every newscast and in every newspaper in the country. That would be a tremendous boon to the industry.

Actually...
I has been full.
It has actually been WAY BEYOND full.

In the year 2000, i think the U.S. Open reached one of it's highest numbers ever as i remember there being a ridiculous amount of charts to look at on the wall, not to mention, they paid out 97 spots.
http://www.azbilliards.com/thepros/2000showtourney2000.php?eventnum=157

I have no idea as to how many players actually entered the event that year, but it was A LOT.
WAY more the 256.
If you go by paying out 25% of the field back, that comes out to 388, so rounding off i would say that they probably got well over 400 that year, and they rounded out the scale to 97 players getting paid so that it was close to 25% as possible, without going way over by including the next pay level.

Unfortunately, we don't have the years 1999, '98, or '97 archived here to my knowledge, and this tournament database only goes back to 2000, but i am sure they had pretty high numbers as well.

:)

Not sure about the wpba giving sanction for the US Open. Jasmin's website has 10/13-17/2010 as a classic date TBA. Johnnyt

Thrilled to see a true Open 9 Ball event!

Hi all :)

I am simply over the moon about Barry's decision to open up the US Open 9 Ball Championships to all competitors! Jay, Pat and co', thank you for supporting the cause :)

Right now, with the turmoil that the WPBA is seeing, I can't imagine that the Board wouldn't allow the membership not to play in such a prestigious event. (I was there for some of the meshugena that happened in San Diego but that's a whole other discussion. Suffice it to say I'm disappointed and disgusted).

As for how many women would actually play? I would offer an educated guess that you'll see upwards of 32 that could enter and yes I believe many would travel in order to say they played in the first US Open that allowed women to participate.

Jasmin's a world beater - let's not forget she came in 3rd against the top male players in the World 8 Ball Championships, won gold in all four disciplines at the European's, won 3 WPBA titles last year and overall, is on top of her game. If anyone has a chance to snap it off, it's Jasmin. Karen and Kelly both are strong contenders to finish high, and I wouldn't count out some of the new blood coming in from Asia.

I would most definitely make the trip to the Championships, not just to watch the ladies but to reconnect with some of guys whom I've known for a long time!

Good luck ladies - show the men how its done eh?

yes at least a few women said they would love to play, as long as it doesn't compete with events in Asia. Alot of the european woman play in Asia throughout the year.

I agree with Superstar that Karen plays way better against the men. Her all around game is amazing. Jasmin as well, she has great finishes against the worlds best men and she just keeps getting better. She is proof that if you play with the men from the beginning, you will be competitive, if not winning against them.

Fatboy, I know I am not the best female player and I have no grand idea that I will win the US Open. I can only try my best and see what happens. At least then I can be a part of something, say I tried it and definitely say that I gave it my all. I know there are plenty of men that go to that tournament with the same attitude.

I am curious to see what happens!

Sarah

I would be supprised if male players at the highest level could get thier ego bruised by losing to a female.I know when I first started playing guys would tease "you lost to a girl" and I assumed it must meant something...but It means absolutely nothing.

Everyone has lost to some1 who they considered to be a lower level player and that can be cause for frustration but for a pro to consider gender in the equation seams very unpro.

I hope many women are able to play,do not most female pros have sponsors? If a woman makes the finals it will be a huge event maybe get a mention on SportsCenter? This IMO is not a gender war but it could be billed that way wich is good for buissness.I listen to a lot of sports radio and would love to hear some pool talk!

There is a small sanction fee involved to allow the WPBA pros to play in the U.S. Open. My personal opinion is that it adds to an already excellent event. The women who play will be competitive and I full expect to see one or two go deep in the field. A top sixteen finish by a woman would not surprise me in the least.

That said, I am very doubtful that we will see a woman champion at the U.S. Open for many years to come. But I also thought no one would ever run ten racks for the million dollars all those years ago. That prize lasted exactly one tournament! Nothing Jasmin does surprises me. She has game and is fearless! One of the most exciting matches I ever saw was when Yu Ram Cha outplayed Shane last year in Vegas and pulled off a marvelous come back win. She got out rack after rack in some very difficult spots. The crowd was going crazy and the pressure was intense. Watching her play that match made a believer out of me. I got positive responses from all the women I spoke with in San Diego with one exception, who will go nameless.

Kudos to Barry for pulling the trigger on an important step forward for professional pool in America. As others have said already, women have been competing successfully against the men for several years now. The IPT, Derby City and the Joss Tour come to mind, as well as the World Ten Ball in Manila. And thanks to the WPBA for creating the tour that has developed so many women champions.
