Biloxi Mike Murdered!!!!

Mike was a good friend of mine. I got to know him well when I spent some time at Suzie Gabbard's pool room in Ocean Springs a few years ago. We practiced almost daily.

Most people don't realize the talent that he was. He was a vicious 1 pocket player with his best weapon being his meek, mild, and kind appearance.

He will be missed.

Mike Templeton

It's sad to hear anyone has died. It's sick to hear anyone has been murdered. My condolances go out to his family.

It may be a good time to travel with a friend if your going into a room looking for action. Someone may need to watch your back.

The following is what I posted on onepocket.org regarding Mike's supposed murder. I post it here in hopes that someone who sees this suspect in another locale might recognize him, or recognize is m.o.:

It is with great sadness and great frustration that I report my knowledge of the events surrounding the murder of my friend "Biloxi Mike" Surber.

I came to Skeeter's Billiards at my usual time Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 10). Mike was playing friendly pass-time one-pocket with another friend of mine, Jerry, who works at the Beau Rivage with Mike. Mike and Jerry have been friends for years. I took the table next to theirs, and commenced to practice.

Shortly I noticed a stranger standing about 15 feet away, intently watching Mike and Jerry play. He just stood there sipping on a bottle of beer and watching. Presently he came up to the two men, and asked Mike if anyone liked to gamble. Mike said he did, and they walked up to the bar for a conversation. Mike then came back and resumed play with Jerry.

The stranger presently walked over again and told Mike that he had been watching him play, and that he couldn't beat Mike. Mike remarked that one-pocket was his best game, but that he also played 9-ball. At that point the guy started telling the two that he and partners had a recording studio in Atlanta, and that he was in the Gulfport/Biloxi area to scout locations for a new studio. From then on I paid only partial attention to what they were saying. Most of it I wasn’t interested in. Some of it I couldn't hear.

I didn't like the looks of the guy. He was rather swarthy looking, possibly Mediterranean extraction, with dark hair pulled back into a pony-tail. He was 5' 8" or 5' 9", medium build-- maybe 165 pounds. He had on a medium blue long sleeved dress shirt, and dark slacks. He had a soft voice-- rather disarming and non-threatening, and had the allure of an experienced con. That package put up a red flag to me, and I didn't even want to meet the guy. However, I just figured him for a bullshitter.

I heard him tell Mike that he needed someone to show him around the casinos, and help him get the lay of the land. He asked Mike if he'd do it. Mike said, "You mean right now?" I recall thinking to myself that that was the wrong answer. Why would Mike even consider it?

Anyway, Mike agreed to help the guy out. Mike called another friend of his to tell him that he and this guy would be driving Mike's pickup over to the friend's house to pick up Mike's car (Mike had left it at the friend's when he had anticipated damage from tropical storm Ida), and then they would drop Mike's pickup back at Mike's house so that they could use his car for the "tour".

They left the poolroom at around 4 PM. Then Jerry moved over to my table to play pool with me. We both were surprised that Mike would take this guy at his word, and leave with him. We thought it was strange --that although Mike was a normally a wary guy, and usually very cautious and suspicious-- but this time he seemed to drop his natural guard. I think Mike had simply fallen for this guy’s line of crap.

They first stopped off at an attorney friend of Mike's, to see if the guy might need any legal assistance in setting himself up in Biloxi. The attorney was not in the office, so the guy left his business card (which turned out to be a stolen card), and they left. I talked with the secretary today. She said the guy creeped her out, and she couldn't figure what Mike was doing with that guy.

They next stopped by Mike’s friend’s house to get Mike’s car. The friend told me he didn’t bother to go out, but that he looked out the glass door and saw Mike start his car, and the guy following in Mike’s pickup.

Very little is known from that point until Thursday (yesterday) morning, when Mike’s car was noticed in the parking lot, parked in an area that was blocking some deliveries. The owner of Skeeter’s saw Mike’s car. He saw that the doors were unlocked, and the keys were in the ignition, so he simply moved it to another spot. Later Jerry came to the poolroom, having heard that Mike never showed up for work at the casino, which had never before happened. He and another guy opened up Mike’s car and saw Mike’s credit cards and license in a rubber band, with no money attached. The then knew that something was very wrong.

They drove over to Mike’s house, but couldn’t get any answer at the door. They came back to the poolroom and called the Ocean Springs police. The police said they couldn’t break in, but that they’d look the other way if his friends wanted to do so. A group of guys then back over to Mike’s. They kicked open a hole through some storm plywood in the back window, and looked in. Mike was laying face down in a pool of blood. They then called the police, who immediately cordoned off the scene, and wouldn’t let anyone in the house.

The consensus opinion of Mike’s friends is that he had been bludgeoned in the back of the head and left for dead. They believe that if he’d been shot, that close-by neighbors would have heard it. They suspect that the murderer then took Mike’s money, and possibly whatever else he could from the house; then drove Mike’s car back to the poolroom, and fled in the perpetrator’s own vehicle.

The police have naturally not commented on any aspect of the case. They and the family will have an autopsy done. I assume that they’ll call in someone from either Jackson or New Orleans. Until then, we have only conjecture to explain this sad and sickening set of circumstances.

We locals are in deep shock over this. One of the guys said he felt as though he was in a coma. I’ve never before had a close friend who was senselessly murdered. It's an awful feeling. I’m just hoping and praying along with everyone else here that they can somehow find the guy who did this.

Doc

P.S. There is no evidence whatever that Mike's cue collection, which was kept in two combination-locked safes-- was stolen. Mike was reported to have had only a couple of hundred dollars on him. We're just going to have to wait until the autopsy and other reports are released.

A true gentleman !!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike 5 or 6 yrs ago at a tournament in Mobile. We played i-pkt for 6-7 hrs and I was fortunate to break even with Mie, being down the entire match.
Since that time, every time Isaw Mike at different tournaments, you couldn't have known a better person. Very witty, just a nice guy.
When my friend,Joe Salazar, called me this morning and told me about this, I was very shocked that this could happen to such a good person. When you are a good decent person, sometimes you are to trusting of others.
I hope the lowlife who did this is caught and dealt with quickly.
I know one thing, the pool world has lost a very good ambassador for our game, a true friend and a very good player.
My condolences and prayers to his family and friends. Mike will truely be missed.

Sad news indeed..

Doesnt sound like a random robbery but rather that he was targeted.

Also seems like with all the driving around and stops that some type of camera would have caught them or the vehicle.

If this wasnt random then these guys are within the billiard community.

Somthings not quite right about the story of what happened to Mike.We may never know all the truth but I hope they grab up the scumbag that murdered him.Condolences to his family.:(

Thanks for posting this information. Sounds like there may be a chance of getting fingerprints off one of the vehicles. And there are several witnesses to what the guy looked like, including you. I was told he was driving a black Ford F-250 PU. Did you see it? Please keep us posted on what else you find out.

That's what I was thinking, Jay. Chances are this guy's prints are in a law enforcement data base so if they can get prints from the car, pool hall, attorney's office or house they will know who he is. And perhaps, since there are several people who saw this guy, someone can post the composite sketch or mug shot here when it becomes available.

I had the good fortune to meet Mike when I helped Grady with the Gulf Coast Classic a few years ago.

The perp was in a pool hall looking for someone to prey on. He has probably done this before in a pool room or a bar. As the word spreads perhaps someone will recognize the description and notify the authorities as to where he was seen before. Any small thread of information can be helpful.

Sounds like this guy left fingerprints everywhere. Business card, beer bottle, vehicle, credit card/drivers license. It's possible a surveillance camera somewhere between the pool hall, lawyer's office and house caught the vehicle with the killer.

I will be surprised if they don't catch the killer.

One thing on my mind is whether this guy just wandered in and came up with a story or if he got steered there by somebody and had a plan when he walked in the door. Sounds like he had it worked out in advance with the fake business card etc.

Either way it's sad and my condolences go out to his family and friends.

I didn't know the man, I only spoke to him a couple of times in passing. I watched him play Shannon 2 or 3 years ago at Derby in the banks. Shannon had been steamrolling right along and was very confident in how he was playing. Mike played exceptionally and beat Shannon pretty soundly. After the match I was talking to Shannon and he said "that guy is a player, and a real gentleman in our sport". It seem she was held in pretty high regards by many.

I have never heard anyone speak badly of Mike and that is a big testament to anyone in the pool world. I hope they find out what happened and some form of justice prevails.

You are exactly right, D! He is a hell of a nice guy! I hope whoever did this pays for their crime. Mike, is a great person that will be terribly missed. I often wonder why the good guys get taken out early in the game and all of the rotten slime are left here to enjoy their lives.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

RIP Mike Surber,

Shannon and Marge

Can anybody provide more description of the PU truck? I just saw a black ford 250 with Texas plates here in Alameda. I did not get a look at the guy driving it but I had an initial gut reaction so I decided to go with it and I jumped in my truck and went to try and catch up and get a look at the driver. But I couldn't find it again. It had a 4-door cab and lots of extras. Looked like the 'deluxe' or something (not familiar with Ford packages but it was loaded). Might have had tinted windows in the back.

Based on the description of the guy Mike was talking to it really rings a bell but I can't quite place it. So I'm wondering if it's someone associated with the pool scene out here that I've met passingly. I know when a hurricane is coming a lot of con men head to the area to try and sell roof repairs and just rip people off in general.

Could be I'm just tilting at windmills, but the more information out there the better IMO.

There's no doubt in my mind that they'll get plenty of fingerprints left by this guy. There was also surveillance video of him in the bar and, I assume, pictures of his rig from the parking lot. However the rig could've been stolen.

The Ocean Springs and Gulfport police are working together on this, along with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. If this guy is the murderer, then they'll have plenty of evidence to identify him; but whether they'll ever find him is another story.

It's my understanding that the autopsy will be performed on the body on Monday. I'm sure they'll bring in outside talent for the exam. The police have released no information about the crime yet. We're hoping that there will be an announcement about their findings this week.

Very sad. There is no way this guy isnt caught and quick. A totally bizarre MO.Clues/evidence everywhere. Who would go for legal help establishing himself before murdering someone? I know not his real name but still...

It sounds to me at this point strangely enough like the guy was setting Mike up for a longer term con and something went real wrong.

My condolences to his family.

Doc, tell the police about AZ Billiards and how far ranging it is. That way, they may be willing to post whatever photo they have of the perp on here. Someone may actually know the guy. Plus any other relevant information. Just like they do with bank robbers. Please let them know how well regarded Mike was in the billiard community.

If we see a photo of the perp, he will be spotted in any poolroom he walks into. I'm certain that the folks of AZ can help them apprehend this guy. I'd sure like to be the one that sees him first. He'll come in wounded!

Even if he wasn't trying to set him up for a long term con, the more I hear, the more I've thought that the guy didn't mean to kill Mike but disable him enough that he could rob him. Regardless of his intention, jail is too good for the SOB. It would be more satisfying (for me) to see this guy get the "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" treatment.
