I had the pleasure of hosting Bob Hunter and his lady friend Debbie in my home for the last few days. If you don't know who Bob Hunter is, you should. He was (and is) a top flight pool player for over three decades, one of the premier Straight Pool players of his generation, with one world title to his credit. His 9-Ball game is pretty salty too, with him tacking defeats on every name player who ever crossed his path. Let's just say that Bob was a factor when he showed up to play in a tournament.

More importantly to me he always carried himself with class and dignity, a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Nowadays he busies himself making fine playing pool cues, among the best in the world. He has a new shop in Chicago and has been actively making cues for the last year there. If you are in the market for a true custom cue that has excellent playing qualities, I recommend that you contact Bob. You will find him a great guy to deal with and as honest as they come.

I have owned three Hunter cues over the years, and I regret selling the solid ebony beauty that was identical to his playing cue. What a sweet hitting cue that was! Someone caught me in a weak moment and I let it slip through my fingers. Absolutely one of the best hitting cues I've ever owned, up there with my Tad and Tascarella.

By the way, his lady friend Debbie is an avid player herself and she loves to play Banks. Must be the Chicago influence. She is a spunky little gal who has a nice solid stroke. She challenged me to a game and naturally I thought I was stealing. That is, until the second game went 6-6. I was grinding to make those last two balls. Debbie can Bank!

You can contact Bob at his website huntercues.com or at (847)612-2303. Once again I cannot recommend him too highly.

I've had the pleasure of Playing Bob in a 9-ball tourney @ The Varsity Club in Oshkosh, WI. Needless to say, he whooped my behind. His game was inspiring. Of course he was using one of his cues. It was perfect. I love the way his ebony cues look when there finished. He does some of the best Ebony and ivory customs in the midwest.

Nice Guy = Bobby Hunter

Bobby Hunter is also the cuemaker who created the cue that John Schmidt won the U.S. OPen 9 Ball Championship with. Yeah, I know, it's the Indian, not the arrow....... but Schmitty sure wishes he had that cue back right now........

Did you fire up the pickup?

How's his health? Not long ago I contributed to a fund for him to have surgery, I believe, for cancer on his eye lid?

Thanks for asking. One eye completely healed and the other still healing. He's doing much better these days. By the way, he told me that on most of his orders he can deliver a completed cue in under six months.

Bob is a great guy who makes beautiful cues. And he knows exactly how a cue should play.

Bob is also the "player" that helped create the monster who is John Schmidt . They spent a lot of time together playing w/Bob mentoring John (may have switched around at one point :) ).

Bob

I knew Bob in Carson City when he owned and operated a beautiful pool hall back in the 80's. The nicest guy you will ever meet always there to help a struggling b player. He had just started making cues back then.

Jay, isn't Bob Hunter the guy who beat Rich Geiler by hitting him with a six pack during Rich's bathroom break? I have the match on tape, it must have happened around 1990?

IIRC, you were doing commentary for that match.

Yes he did run six racks on Rich, three of which took place while Rich was gone. Rich left when it was Bob's turn to break and I told him he could continue to shoot. When Rich came back he was shocked to see the new score. And it got worse from there. :)

Yep, in Reno remember that situation very well. Knowing BH and how he played I got a good side bet on that particular match during the middle because, you could tell when bob caught a second gear, no one liked it, he had perfect speed in second. BH should of beat Archer in the finals (world champ) yrs ago I think..... in Taiwann at the rec center. I think this too, was when Grady beat Buddy 9 zip or whatever zip, he gave Buddy no air, this was when BH was always puttin' a 3 pack then safe, a four pack then safe, then out. Grady had him, I think 8-0 and didn't take a flyer, too much respect.

Yep. Check out my sig pics. I have the original that Bob made for the BCA; soon after he made an identical cue, sans the inscription, for Schmitt.

Only 2 he ever made exactly like that and they are nothing short of phenomenal playing cues. Don't look too shabby either.

FYI, Bob is one of the nicest players, cue maker and pool enthusiast on the planet. A true gentleman regardless of the situation.

I was at the Carom room at one of their tournaments a couple seasons ago. I didn't know him, but someone pointed him out and said what a good straight pool player he is. So I went over and introduced myself. We were bs-ing for awhile. Seemed like a very nice guy, I asked him what his high run in straight pool was, and I think he told me it was 226. Good to hear his eyes are doing better.

Von,
Very nice cue, indeed! Would you sell it to Schmitty?

That is my favorite Hunter cue.

IMO, his best cue ever.
