Everyone is always looking for the edge to begin with.
The difference is that a nit will not gamble if he doesn't get it, while a gambler still wants the bet.

I don't think you meant to phrase it that way Roy.
Actually, the definition of a "nit", is someone who, after he gets "the nuts"...won't gamble anyway. They run in droves..
I have a different defintion of Nit: Someone looking for an edge is not a nit in my opinion. A nit is somebody who ask for the edge (spot) everyday and finally when the person steps up and gives the nit what they want the nit still doesn't play and ask for more
Example: This happened yesterday. My friend tells the guy you got the 8 and the guy says - give me the 7 I got 4k on me and if the game is right I will play. My friend knows he is in a good game. Pretends to think about it for a few seconds and says you got me you got the 7 just like you asked for get up there. Of course the guy says no thanks.
That is a NIT. They ask for a game that they think is way out of line because they think they won't get called on the game. When you can't stand hearing the NIT barking anymore and you tell them to get up there they stilll don't play.

For the most part calling a person a nit is a ploy to get someone to the table, especially when you are being a nit yourself and trying to get them to the table in a bad game.
Somebody was asking about an old poster from AZB yesterday. Walt popped off that he would come down to the tournament and play me for nickels and dimes and I had the seven. He thought he was doing some foolish barking but I simply accepted the terms as offered ignoring that the weight should have been the other way. He showed his colors as a true nit when he wouldn't play the game and conditions that he offered.
While I think that nit is a much overused and abused term you are quite correct, a true nit won't play even after someone accepts his terms without negotiating further.

A nit to me is a person who won't lose any money. They will take a 1 or 2 game flyer at you knowing you will go off 10+ games.
People who matchup heavly in their favor are "Lockup Artists". They only play when they think they have the nuts. Good thing about them is since they think they have the nuts they could loose alot of money before they realize they don't have the nuts!

Most nits call someone a nit so they can be a nit and still get action with the pissed off nit that goes off to the first nit who is also a lock artist nit that puts the nits money that was lucky to be in circulation in the first place into a nit account where the nit will keep it till he's nitting around the funeral home guy makin for a nitty grave.
