Call Me Old Patch Eye

As I posted on here about my "Bubble Eye" a few months ago, I'm "Patch Eye" at least for today.

I detached a retina back at the end of September and my vision in my right eye has been somewhat "screwed up" ever since.

Once the retina was reattached, a bunch of "eye gunk" was floating around in my eye and it was kind of like an "oil patch" that would float in front of my vision every few seconds and make everything super blurry. My vision with my glasses on was close to 20-20, but the floating mass was driving me crazy because it was constantly moving around in my eye.

Today, I had surgery done to remove the gunk. It was out-patient and I have a patch on my eye until tomorrow when I go back for a follow-up.

Not to sound gory, but to put it in laymen's terms, they made two incisions in my eye and used a little "vacuum" to suck all the liquid out of my eye through one, while it was being replaced with saline solution through the other.

The doctor said all went well and I should be good to go. As a matter of fact, I was awake during the procedure and was talking to him during the whole time.

You wouldn't believe some of the "swirling" and "patterns" that were going on in my vision while it was being done. They had a super bright light in my eye and actually had a little flashlight inserted in my eye ball. I could see the little "vacuum" sucking the stuff up and the "gunk" going around in circles. Reminded me of something psychedelic.

The new "liquid" in my eye should be crystal clear when I get my patch off. I'm sure my vision may be screwed up from the trauma for a bit, but I'll be free of the "floating gunk".

Will let you know the outcome when I get the patch off.

I will be glad to play pool again as soon as I'm able to wear my contacts. Maybe I'll make a few more balls now.

Aloha.

Aloha, HE. Hope it all goes perfectly, brother.

Wow! Thank you for sharing that. I've had floaters in my left eye for a while, and I know I need to see an eye doctor soon. I am glad you are on the road to recovery. :)

Hawaiian Eye, back in da house... quick recovery, brother!
You'll be back to giving anybody 9-7 soon.. take care:thumbup:

I actually thought this might be a one eyed play tutorial. Darn macular degeneration in my left eye has my aim so screwed up, I've considered patching it to see how I do with just one eye.

Hope you heal fast and good shooting resumes...

AARRRGG!! Watch out for the one-eyed pirate matey!! He will take your booty!!

Good luck on your recovery!!

Quick

Here is hoping to a quick and speedy recovery. I had to quit reading your post at the
2 incision part, ouch! :)

Just got home from my follow-up visit to the doctor to get my eye patch removed.

My vision is a bit blurred and my eye is red, but I will say that it is 1000% more comfortable than it was before I had the goop sucked out.

It seems that everything is a lot brighter and now that the goop is not floating around my eye seems a hell of a lot less strained. When I had all that crap floating around, it seemed like I was always "concentrating" on the goop since it kept clouding my vision every few seconds and I couldn't wait for it to move.

He told me that I'd probably ask him to do my other eye, now that this one is cleaned up. I have floaters in my left eye, but they were nowhere near what was in my right eye where I had the detached retina.

I saw a lady in the hallway of the hospital and later in the eye clinic that was wearing an eye patch EXACTLY like mine and she had the same procedure done to her by the same doctor yesterday, immediately after he done mine. He told me the goop in her eye was worse than mine was.

I can't say what will happen over the course of the next few days, but I'm expecting my blurred vision to clear up to what it was before the procedure.

He told me that I would need cataract surgery, probably within a year, and he would implant lenses that should get me back to 20-20.

If I ever get back to 20-20, I'll be super, duper pleased. I can't imagine shooting pool again with perfect vision. When I was shooting my best pool, years and years ago, I was 20-20 in my right eye and 20-10 in my left eye.

Aloha.

Good for you, HE. I predict you'll be back running 14 and out in a short short. :grin-square:

Hawaian Eye,
Thanks for the insightful post. Not too much TMI at all, I appreciate it and will remember what you have said about the correction process.
I hope all settles back down to normalcy for you soon.

Aloha and thanks to all the well wishes from everyone.

I can honestly say that this procedure has definitely made my vision WAY better than it was a day or so ago.

The removal of the "gunk" has made a tremendous difference in my comfort. Having that crap floating around in my eye and screwing up my vision for so long was almost unbearable.

I have to put a couple types of drops in my eyes four times a day...one is a steroid and the other is an antibiotic, but they are painless. Other than that, they gave me a little eye-protector patch to put over my eye when I sleep. That is to keep me from inadvertently rubbing my eye until it is healed up.

Reading and typing here on the computer is 1000% easier now, too. Before, the gunk would float in front of my vision every few seconds and disrupt my vision.

Aloha.

All the best to you and hope that is a speedy recovery. Sounds like you are well on your way to having better eyesight, that's gotta be good while on the table.
