At the world class level, I have seen Charlie win matches against just about everybody. If his personality rubs you the wrong way, that's understandable, but it's not a reason to dismiss the man's abilities or accomplishments. Charlie worked tirelessly for years developing his skill to a world class level. He takes a lot of shitt for things he does with tournaments via Dragon Promotions, but let's not forget that when Charlie started DP and the UPA, nothing else was going on. Charlie isn't a talker, he's a do-er, and a damn good one. When others are talking about this and whining about that, Charlie is out there working 20 hour days to make things happen - and he does all that while still being able to maintain his game at a world class level. He may be arrogant, but as a player, he is making more money than 95% of all pool players. You can't argue with success.
As others have said, when you play Charlie, he is not an easy match. If he can see any part of the ball, he'll either make it or he'll lock you up. IMO, he is one of the most frustrating players to play because of his safety play and outstanding shotmaking. If you win a match against Charlie - you will have to win it. He will never give it away. You can bet your asss on that, and afterwards (win or lose) you'll know that you've been in a fight
FWIW, Charlie is not a perfect person. Nobody is. Charlie makes mistakes. I've been pissed off at Charlie before, and I'm glad to say that both of us were mature enough to discuss those issues and put that behind us. Every time I have had an issue, I have been able to call Charlie and discuss it - and being a man of action, Charlie has gone out of his way to do whatever he had to do on his end to fix the situation. I have a lot of respect for Charlie because of that. I can only relay my experiences with Charlie, and that Charlie's lack of popularity does not sway my judgment. I know how hard the man works, and I know when there is a tough decision to be made (about anything) he won't sidestep the issue. He'll take care of it and deal with the consequences even if he gets crucified for it. IMO, that takes balls.
All of this reminds me of a conversation I had with somebody at a tournament a few years ago. The topic of conversation was Mika Immonen - the person I was talking to was going on and on about how Mika was arrogant - capping it off with the statement "all of the European players are rude and arrogant."
So, I to try and steer the conversation elsewhere, I said, "... yeah he was probably having an off day when he offended you, I like watching him play, he is one of the best in the world."
This guy shook his head, and then said..."Well that's your opinion. I don't think so." ... and he said it as if he could walk over there and give Mika lessons.
I've always been floored by people with attitudes like that. But I guess in the game of pool, when a World Champion like Mika can't get respect - perhaps nobody can.
