Charlie Williams Vs the USA

If Charlie played the type of pool he played when he bested Tony Robles in the U.S. Open.................

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You can take a busload of professional poolplayers, and on any given day any of them could beat any of the others (in shorter races). The wheat starts to get seperated from the chaff in longer races, but I didn't see any mention of longer races in the original post.

When dedicated to PLAYING, Charlie Williams has got game. You don't have to like him as a person, but you gotta respect the fact that he can play a little.

The balls roll funny for everybody.

It's kinda dumb IMO to list players who could beat him when I've seen total NOBODIES take down seasoned professionals in regional AND major tournaments.

Maniac

Well said!

I met Charlie at a joss event and he was going on and on about championships he won... He was kinda arrogant in his self emphasized glory. 2 hours later a local guy knocked him outta the event. True story.

"Local guy beats up pro" is an old story. I am 100% certain every single professional can tell you about how they went to some small town in the middle of nowhere and lost to town champ. It happens. It's a race to 9 in 9ball. I've played Charlie Williams a few times and I think he's a beast. I think it can be a bit deceiving since he doesn't appear to pocket as well as someone like Mika or play as intelligently as someone like Reyes but the guy has a big break and gets out well. If he has any weaknesses in his game, I'd love to hear about them.

At the world class level, I have seen Charlie win matches against just about everybody. If his personality rubs you the wrong way, that's understandable, but it's not a reason to dismiss the man's abilities or accomplishments. Charlie worked tirelessly for years developing his skill to a world class level. He takes a lot of shitt for things he does with tournaments via Dragon Promotions, but let's not forget that when Charlie started DP and the UPA, nothing else was going on. Charlie isn't a talker, he's a do-er, and a damn good one. When others are talking about this and whining about that, Charlie is out there working 20 hour days to make things happen - and he does all that while still being able to maintain his game at a world class level. He may be arrogant, but as a player, he is making more money than 95% of all pool players. You can't argue with success.

As others have said, when you play Charlie, he is not an easy match. If he can see any part of the ball, he'll either make it or he'll lock you up. IMO, he is one of the most frustrating players to play because of his safety play and outstanding shotmaking. If you win a match against Charlie - you will have to win it. He will never give it away. You can bet your asss on that, and afterwards (win or lose) you'll know that you've been in a fight

FWIW, Charlie is not a perfect person. Nobody is. Charlie makes mistakes. I've been pissed off at Charlie before, and I'm glad to say that both of us were mature enough to discuss those issues and put that behind us. Every time I have had an issue, I have been able to call Charlie and discuss it - and being a man of action, Charlie has gone out of his way to do whatever he had to do on his end to fix the situation. I have a lot of respect for Charlie because of that. I can only relay my experiences with Charlie, and that Charlie's lack of popularity does not sway my judgment. I know how hard the man works, and I know when there is a tough decision to be made (about anything) he won't sidestep the issue. He'll take care of it and deal with the consequences even if he gets crucified for it. IMO, that takes balls.

All of this reminds me of a conversation I had with somebody at a tournament a few years ago. The topic of conversation was Mika Immonen - the person I was talking to was going on and on about how Mika was arrogant - capping it off with the statement "all of the European players are rude and arrogant."

So, I to try and steer the conversation elsewhere, I said, "... yeah he was probably having an off day when he offended you, I like watching him play, he is one of the best in the world."

This guy shook his head, and then said..."Well that's your opinion. I don't think so." ... and he said it as if he could walk over there and give Mika lessons.

I've always been floored by people with attitudes like that. But I guess in the game of pool, when a World Champion like Mika can't get respect - perhaps nobody can.

Half of those people have no chance, half are either inactive and/or semi-retired, and the other half I've never heard of. :)

I'm not a CW fan by any stretch of the imagination, but let's put some realistic candidates out there if we're going to be making lists.

I'm 100% sure he was joking. There are two fictional characters on that list.

just my thoughts

I've only seen two who listed in this thread who can hang with Charlie. Earl when he is on and SVB.I've heard lots of negative things about Charlies personality but I tend to judge people on how they treat me .Charlie was extremely nice and personable the two or three times I have met him. Also have chated with him on facebook and I can tell you this , he is one of the most dedicated players out there when it comes to practice /training.

arrogant or confidence ??

Seems like for every winner out there there are 100's if not 1,000's of haters on the sidelines saying they are arrogant or some other side steping coping mechanism that will keep them from looking at themselves and why they aren't a winner .From personal experience I have had this happen to me in several areas of my life over and over .....sometimes to the point where you would begin to wonder who your real friends are. Now if I can get my table back together and some good practice in ,my hopes are to have people hating on my skills at the table as well. Also just for the record I was really upset about how "arrogant" a certian pro was one day and went home thinking and talking about it until I realized .......I was a little jealous ,so I had to get honest with myself about it.:o

ar·ro·gant: Having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities

people with self confidence:They believe in their abilities.
They solve their problems, and not just rest with worry for them.
They Face and eliminate their fears.
They have the ability to take calculated risks.
They Love and respect themselves.

lots of hot air & opinions...

look at the BCA or any other ranking and see how the players line up

look at the same for the last 10 years

look at the recent article on the top ten most influential people in billiards today

facts are facts.... what if's and uninformed opinions are pretty worthless

Charlie has gambled a few times with Tony Watson and Tony beat him in Virginia Beach and North Carolina a few years ago, I watched both matches. But he asked Tony to come to Florida and Tony went twice and lost both times and told me he never could get the feel of the tables due to the humidity which Charlie was use too.--Leonard

And at that time CW would bet ten grand or more

I'll second that. Charlie was at derby practicing the night before all the action started, hitting balls and practicing for hours before he headed in. He seemed very focused at all times.

That says something cause Tony is/was a nightmare for the cash

Don't be a hater your entire life. Just bask in the greatness of CW. You smell that....that's what CW is cooking!

Mikey..Just come back down to earth and kick it so I collect my drinks..And dont be so bitter that Charlie snuck into the wrong hotel room while lookin for yours..

I woulda snuck into that hotel room too! Wait am I allowed to say that out loud. I know it was a creepy thing to do, but if he was asleep that woulda been a real good dream. He's lucky he didnt get cut.

This aint about my dude's character, it's about his game, and he's a pimp.

I still got your drinks in the clip, you can fire them off whenever you ready as long as you drink them back to back!

he knows...

Good call on Bilbrey... not many people remember him if they weren't in florida... but he'd just about beat anything that moved.... There's a couple non americans on the list and a couple where it's tight if not tough, but for the most part you nailed it...

Is there really anyone on this list he can hijack, complete stealing if they are playing thier top speed? This is only like 30-40 names, I'm sure I'm missing about 50 more than can give him all he wants....Never said Charlie was bad, hes definitely not, but he can for sure always get action in the good ole U.S. There wont be any shortage for him.
