I'd have to say that the classiest living player is a toss-up between so many of the European players, primarily the Germans.

Ralph Souquet is as classy as it gets. There s no doubt about that.

Thorsten Hohmann is a true gentleman as well. Hell!! I even watched Thorsten literally throw the towel in at the final table of a major tournament as a sign of respect for his opponent (I don't remember who off hand) running a beautiful rack and getting great shape on the 9.

And Thomas Engert always gets my vote for a true class-act. Great player and classy guy.

I would have to agree - Thorsten, Thomas and Ralf exude class. So does Allison and Ewa.

One other player I would like to throw into the ring is Dan Louie. Even when we have had a couple minor disagreements off the table, he has been unfailingly polite and couched his displeasure in such a sweet way, that you can't help liking the guy. He is always a gentleman and many players' hero here in the NW.

Define class.
Ewa Laurence{sp?}, Mike Zuglan, long before the Joss tour got started.
Crane, maybe. A bit too dour for my taste. Rempe is/was a GREAT player, but in no way the classiest and I've known Jim for over 30 years.
Ralph, Thorsten.

What caught my eye is the guy sat in the background behind Earl. Is that George Lucas? Perhaps trying to cast his next Star Wars movie? Maybe he needs an Ewok & a new villain!

HAHAHAHAAH. Classic.

Seriously though, that crap on his hands are "finger extenders". Another Earl gimmick. I believe he and Parica got into an argument over the use of them in said picture.

LMFAO!! That is freaking hilarious!!

Classiest :

Ewa Laurence - met her in person and she was a doll AND IS STILL very attractive :)

I'll take a wild jab at this one, but I am suprised nobody mention'd THE MIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thorston, Hopkins, Crane, Mosconi, Mike Massey, Souquet,

LEAST : #1 EARL THE PEARL what a dick if he has one lol, maybe thats why he is so angry all the time?

I was pickpocketed at the Chicago Willards tournament in 1992. 1400 miles from home and completely busted. I was sitting there on the bleachers stunned about having my wallet lifted and Tommy Kennedy walked over and asked me what was wrong. I told him and without a hesitation he handed me money. I have never forgotten that and I try to support his SE Open tour whenever possible.

I think alot of the players here mentioned have had moments where their competitiveness got the best of them. Especially in match play, as playing pool for money seems to often bring out the worst in people. Not trying to say this behavior is acceptable, just that what you see may not be an accurate picture of what the person is really like.

While it is hard to dispute the choice of Irving Crane; I'm surprised that no one mentioned Bill Staton (Weenie Beenie) in the Honorable Mention category.

He was very well-dressed, well-spoken, friendly, and entertaining - a consummate gentleman on the few occasions we met.

For living players; the women seem to have the men beat all to hell. Ewa Laurance, Jeanette Lee, Allison Fisher seem head and shoulders above the men.

The "classy" player should be well-dressed, reasonably articulate; should exhibit exemplary sportsmanship; should be entertaining to be around; and should show sincere desire to promote the game and promote charitable causes. My current overall choice for living players = Jeanette Lee (no surprise there; I'm the world's second greatest Black Widow fan - just after DABABE).

Wow, I can't believe I completely forgot about Weenie Beenie! Wasn't he a real gentlemen, in society that is? I know he was a successful business man prior to entering the world of pool.

Rep for a forgotten one!

Jim

Now that we have a great list of players, (I don't know how) but someone compile those listed and lets all vote. Weenie Beenie is also a great pick, stand up guy and his wife, WOW even in her 70's she still looks great and has a smile like Bill.

An outstanding suggestion! I never heard any comments about Beenie that would make me think he was not a classy guy.

You just volunteered!

I really like your suggestion of compiling the names into a poll for voting. And I think you just volunteered to do it!

OK, I'll give it a try if no one objects and you give me a couple of days to do it. Here's my plan - I'll go back through the thread and count the votes for the classiest living and deceased pool player. I'll just have to use my best judgement about whether the votes were meant to be taken seriously. For example, I won't take any votes for Earl seriously.:) Then I will take the six with the most votes in each category and create a voting poll. That number (6) is arbitrary, but I think it should be somewhere between 5 and 10. I don't know how to create a poll, but I assume I can figure it out. However, if SOMEONE ELSE wants to take on the task of creating the poll once I compile the lists of nominees, that would be fine by me. Any takers???
