Just wanted to tell everyone that gives a rat's ass... as much pool as I've played and as much or as little I've accomplished on this sport, I DID NOT put myself through college playing pool. I won a ton of tournaments, but I wasn't good enought to put myself thought college playing pool. I had a 30 hour a week job.

I'm shocked how many people who can't even a hold a stick put themselves through college. They must have been really good.

When I was a freshman there were a bunch of Seniors who played good. One guy would beat me fairly regularly for a couple of bucks. After that they all graduated. One freshman came in when i was a sophmore who could play we would battle back in forth for a few bucks. Beyond that no one could play nor was there any money games to be had. I only played a handful of hours a year during college

I sometimes wonder where my game would be now if I had those 5 1/2 college years back:grin-square:. My Masters degree in pool did not start until I was in my early/mid 20s

I'd say I'm a B player now

Freddie this is a little off your point but related.
My two sons are in the same college, one is a senior and one a junior and both with very tough degrees. They both play decent pool and have their own cues and cases, they even have a table at their frat house and the cutest little campus pool room you have ever seen.

I bet they have not played but maybe ten times each since their freshman year!
In this day and age pool and college don't mix...at least for these two boys.
 
I graduated last year with a BA in business. Between my jobs and classes I played pool as much as I could. Between classes, after school, after work. I'm surprised I even got my school work done! I played in the student union tournaments, even got a second job at a pool hall.

There is no way you could play pool to pay for college. Snooker maybe... lol

College and pool went hand in hand for me. We started a club and a club team. I was at our student union poolroom every day and I saw exactly 0 action ever. If anybody at Indiana University from 02-06 was putting themselves through school playing pool I would have known them. There was no one, but I bet there are plenty of dudes that say otherwise.

"I put myself through college playing pool", are music to a hustlers ears. I haven't found one yet that I didn't beat...of course I never played Nick Varner. I came close in Tampa, FL around 1981, a friend tipped me off who he was just before we were going to play. Johnnyt
 
Of course, I take them to mean that they made enough money gambling at pool that they always had pocket money. Even that, it's a tough gig. You have had to play so much pool that school wasn't ever going to be the future.

There are two guys on this board that were in my school's pool hall every bit as I was and both were at least a ball better than I played. And I doubt either of them would say they "put themselves through school." They both played through school, though!

I can attest to that for Freddie.

Yeah even using the pocket money or spending money definition I still find any such claim highly suspect. I never saw anyone play for more than a dollar at either IU or Ball State.

In the early eighties I put myself through pool by playing college.

I played at the colleges pool room and at a dive bar on main street nearly everyday. I even found away to sneak in the union hall after it was closed and play half of the night.
There was only one around that could beat me and even then it was a close match.

Back then I had zero cash and made almost that much on pool bets! I did win a original Tip Tapper from a good player named Wayne.:thumbup:

Cuebuddy> still plays with the house cue that was given to him at graduation.

Depending on the month, tournaments and random races could put $100 to $400 in my pocket. The most came from bar tournaments that didn't draw in A players. That was clearly not enough to cover even a fraction of tuition, room, or board. But it did cover my beer, which was also important.

I've never met anyone who says, "I put myself through college playing pool" that I wouldn't love to play against.

I've considered this very carefully, Freddy.

It's a 'catch 22' thing.....
....if one could play pool well enough to put himself through college...
...he probably couldn't make it through college.

He'd have to quit one or the other

To play really good pool while in college is a sure way of failing out. I did hustle in college and made a few thousand, mostly off of one rich guy. Trying to make money playing all night in pool rooms means sleeping though your classes all day and not getting your studying in,

With the better colleges at 60k+ per year, I would not advocate trying to pay for it through pool winnings!
 
While in college, I made enough money playing pool in local tournaments and CHEAP action to pay for my bar tab/ beer and that is about it.
 
In college my game was pinball. It didn't pay for school but it bought my lunch every day and sometimes dinner. I'd put in a quarter, run up 21 games (max allowed) and sell the machine for $3.

Ocassionally I'd gamble with someone for $5 or $10, but there wasn't much of that action.
 
I had a Professor who went to Brown University in the early 60s after the Hustler boom he had stories where he hustled rich kids for lots of money even pink slips. Had some kids Corvette for a while.

He said he got kicked out of Brown because of Hustling pool. I tend to believe him. Some loser got pissed and reported him to the dean
 
I played about an hour of pool a week while in college. Never brought my own cue to college, so it was always with a house cue. Didn't play for money even once.
 
Pool kept me from having a real job through my 1362 college years, my parents paid my school expenses and I lived at home for much of the time.

I did work in the pool room 2 days/ wk and the owner told me one time that his bank informed him I Hadnt cashed a paycheck for over a year. He was nice enough to write me one check for the full amount. Condition being I went straight to my bank, across the street
