Comment from Danny Dilaberto

I wasn't on the stream, and I don't know the physics of the object ball gaining weight, but from what you say about the cue ball glancing more as you hit it harder, I would imagine he's talking about the cueball's tendency to follow the tangent line for a longer distance before top or bottom spin take effect on cut shots. When you cut a ball softly with a lot of top spin, the spin will take effect much sooner, as opposed to hitting it harder where the "curve" is wider.

You are 100% correct. Danny knows a lot, it is unfortunate we lost a lot of good advise from him because at times he confuses the color of the balls, i bet you those balls are not coming back.

Danny

I've watched a lot of the old accustats DVDs where he did a fine job but this year was terrible. I was especially surprised how negative he was to his partners in the booth. My wife was watching with me (had the stream on the TV) and made the same comment out of nowhere. It was painful at times and I think it is time he retires.

The commentary was very rough this year, I think it is time to replace Danny with someone else in the booth. I do not want to sound mean but he was confused by which balls were which and that can be given a pass but a ball set should have been in the booth for them to refer to so they know what number is what. .

Not to disagree about changing him out, but I did a few hours of commentary this week using the TV Cyclop ball sets. It was very difficult to see what color was what. It was also not natural to tell which ball was next considering we've grown up with ball sets that make color sense (primary, secondary, and tertiary). The TV Cyclop mixes old-school primary, with tertiary pastels (blast away, color wheel mafia). The toughest to remember is the Cyclop Green vs the Turquoise as far which ball was which number.

We had a Cyclop TV set sitting next to us, but it didn't matter. While the game is flowing, to constantly check the set of balls next to you and then try to determine if the next ball on the TV screen or 35 feet away is lavender, cyclop green, or turquoise was a challenge. I've got bionic lasik eyes and it was still a problem. I can't imagine it was too easy for anyone in the Accu-Stats booth.

I agree, many had trouble on the stream with the ball colors but the other stuff with Danny is just age sadly. I think that Cyclop throw up green needs to go, it is too close in color to the yellow which causes confusion.

I don't know how you can classify Danny's knowledge of one pocket, as "great" !...His shot selection is usually
laughable..as is his commentary !.. In fact, whoever is in the booth with him, often wonders aloud, what the hell he
is talking about !...He rarely knows (or seems to care) what the ball score is..

You know Dick thinking back on what you said in your reply, I have to agree with you. I guess I overstated about his knowledge. I was always wondering why he wanted to kick a ball instead of banking it.
He does mumble a lot, sounds like he has a mouthful of something.

I don't understand why they would change the color of the balls in the first place. I don't like those new balls color, if I were to buy a new set of balls they would be the traditional colors.--Smitty

Danny is a raconteur, he provides nice color and entertainment to the matches but don't take everything he says so seriously. In a pool room he can command a small crowd as he tells stories with his arms waving and clever delivery. He may forget now how many people he is talking to in the broadcasts and many may take exception with things he says. On the other hand I would not want him to freeze up and say nothing afraid he may say something that will get him criticized.

Accept him and enjoy him for who he is, he is not going to change just to please anyone. Thats is what those of us who have known him for so many years all love about him. He is a true character of the sport. Not many left like him. Just look around and ask yourself, how many of todays players would you have any interest in listening to period?

I do not have much of a problem with him re-telling stories I have already heard but when you can't get the balls right, pockets, players names or whether a ball can be hit, made or someone is snookered then it becomes a real problem. It is time to pass the torch for Danny, everyone can have a bad day but for the whole Derby it was horrible.

Yeah, understanding his explanation was difficult. It almost sounds like he's trying to describe ''forcing the angle''. If you keep hitting the exact same spot on the object ball but increase spin and speed to the cue ball, the ball will overcut more and more.

I will say this....I don't know much about one pocket but I did learn that if I don't have the break, my next shot will always be the 4 rail scratch kick!

It was the go to shot by Danny after every break this week...

Object Ball gaining weight

The harder you hit the cue ball with high or low, the further the cue ball travels down the stun line before the high or low takes effect. Old timers explained this by saying the object ball seems heavier the harder you hit the cue ball because the cue ball travels further down the stun line!

Go Danny!

i don't like people talking about someone who is working hard
and in my opinion doing a good job

loose ships sink ships etc

i think danny knows more about the game than any of his knockers and most of his supporters

one pocket is a game of choices and delayed gratification, sometimes the shot you shoot
wii show fruit in the next 4 or 10 turns

sometimes theyounger straight shooters shoot and make shots the commenbtators wouldn't
and sometimes my friend billy is putting danny in a spot just for fun

i say keep danny in the booth
he is colorful
and i like him
he is one of the very few who haven't been to dallas to beat me

His knowledge of pool is without question but if you watched this past week and change you could see he was anything but sharp, he seemed very confused.

I respect Danny for all his accomplishments. I was at his BCA HOF induction. That said I can not watch anything that has him as a commentator. Seriously. I don't buy streams that have him in the booth. Its totally a personal taste thing but when I hear him start talking during a pool match it tilts the shit out of me.

Commentary is totally subjective though so for every guy like me there is a guy who loves it. The flip side is I will buy/watch a stream if Incardona is in the booth just to hear what he has to say. Different strokes.

I'm glad you posted this, Mac.

Danny Diliberto is an incredible person and I feel people should enjoy
his commentary at this stage in his life...he still has more to offer than
most pool players.
So try to glean what y'all can while he is still here....
...instead of standing by with the shovels.

Of course, I'm very biased on this subject....I've been graced with his
friendship for a long time. He told me years ago that I don't have the
anger to be a good fighter....so if I got into a jackpot, to call him.....
...and he would fly in to straighten it out.

Danny has a lot of wisdom to share...take advantage of it.

Confusion was rampant among the commentators....all of them, re identifying balls with the new color scheme.

Maybe that confusion spilled over into other areas for Danny, but, not being near the table and relying on the distortion of cameras to speculate on balls that pass, cannot be easy.

Billy I and Danny seem to get on each others nerves. But, that's not new.

Actually, I enjoyed Mark and Danny in the booth the most. Mark acted as a bit of a safety net for Danny if he misspoke. Mark's appreciation of and for Danny is easy to hear during their commentary.

I think it would be fun to have Mark, Danny and Corey in the booth at the same time....for shot selection discussions...'just to see if would go'.

Loved Danny's line to Mark....'Who you calling Pops?'

Danny is our Vin Scully and Chick Hearn...hope he is in the booth till they carry him out.

Agreed...

But this isn't what Danny was talking about - he was stating the ball "Glances" more the harder you hit it (because the object ball gains weight - he was adamant about this gaining weight thing). Glance in the INITIAL angle off the object ball. He was saying the harder you hit the cue ball the more it will glance off the object ball (he didn't say anything about draw or follow). Obviously if you a ball with draw or follow eventually friction kicks and the cue ball will deviate from this 90 degree path.

Think about it this way - Danny is right if the object ball did gain weight - think about hitting a cue ball into a VERY HEAVY eight ball made of steel straight on - the eight ball wouldn't move and the cue ball would actually GLANCE straight back at you.

I am just trying to see what Danny meant when he said an object ball gains weight the faster a cue ball is hit into it and how the object ball would know this (perhaps some quantum thing going on??).

I've heard the term "lost its weight" applied in 3-cushion. A spinning ball will skid along a fairly linear path until losing its weight when the spin then causes the ball to curve slightly.

The harder you hit a ball, typically, the longer it maintains this "weight" and travels true to its intended line. The ball's actual weight never changes, but its behavior seems more resistant to the affects of spin and felt friction as force increases... acting as if it had more weight.

Even drunk, I take Danny's commentary over anybody else's...though in this case, I'm not sure that had anything to do with his assessment.

This description interest me the most. I think I understand what you are saying despite the fact that I have played 3-cushion only once and I am not drunk. :D

It may come from his years of boxing. Faster fist carries more weight :D.
