Commentators for Mosconi Cup 2013

OK, I just got permission to name the fourth voice. Ted Lerner out of the Philippines. Ted is an American who lives in Manila and he is a boxing announcer and sports reporter. He is the Press Officer for the WPA and he is very knowledgeable about the game and the players. I have worked with him in past years and always enjoy his company on the job. He is a true professional and I know you will enjoy his work.

His name sounds vaguely familiar, but I sure can't place him in my memory for pool. But Jerry, if you say he's got "it", then I'll trust you. (and also place all accountability for his performance upon you ;) )

Thanks for sharing Jerry. GO USA!!!

But anyone in the world would be better than arguably the worst pool commentator ever, Chuck Shriner.
He elicited lots of abuse/hate mail from viewers to get him off the air when he was commentating years ago.

Jerry, Jay are always reliable and regular top choices
Jim Wych sounds bored and makes viewers sleepy
Danny is fine until he gets grumpy and rambles about his life stories
Phil Yates knows his stuff but his voice is tad bit grating.

How about Ewa Mattaya Laurence with that sexy voice?
Andy Goldstein ? Though he is more of an entertainer. He has beaten Steve Davis in snooker and taken away Steve Davis's honorifics/ world titles. He has beaten Darren Appleton in English pool/blackball and would have taken Appleton's World title also. I would like to see him challenge Earl 8ball race to 1 and take away Earl's world titles also
I would like to see John MacDonald in the box, Man he will rock the box and keep viewers on their toes with his booming voice.:D

Shucks. Now nobody wins KK9's T-shirt contest. :crying:

lol. Jeez JAM, how did we miss this pick? It was so obvious, right? ;)

I wonder how this pick came about. Matchroom doesn't do anything without thinking it through. Perhaps they believe it will bring in a few more views in the far east?

Look forward to hearing Mr Lerner! Congrats to him for a special honor!

I hope it comes out good and pool presents itself in the best way.

I was embarrassed for the USA, Pool, and the Mosconi Cup when Earl lowered the bar to Jerry Springer.

I won’t be watching this year. I think it is better than even money that this train is going to wreck again.

IMO, another missed opportunity for pool. But apparently, that’s what the people want to see.

I almost said that. I sometimes buy whole coffee at his internet cafe. dang it.

Ted Lerner is also the brother of long time Gold Channel personality Rich Lerner I believe. Their voices are somewhat similar.

Not sure how the logistics would work out being Buddy is required to tell SVB what shot to shoot and Earl what arm weights to use. ;)

Would Matchroom fly out Steve Davis perhaps? I have no clue if Steve has any commentating experience though, but surely he could do color.

Davis has been commentating on snooker for decades.

He's done a reasonable amount of pool when Matchroom did the World Championships. Him and Jay were good.

Camel Pro Series

During its heyday, Tommy, a non-pool playing announcer joined the color commentators and assorted pros to do programming. His perspective was refreshing, enlightening and Very entertaining, and evolved with time and each production. To not have this, and just have the common herd is diminishing the product the venue, and the moment, john Q public understands pool better from a non players perspective, plus Tommy was a pro at this endeavor. I forget the comedians name, who's done a Earl before, he could be good to try in this spot.

Who's gonna commentate this year in Vegas?
I hope for Jimmy Wych, Upstate All, Incardona, pro's from both sides...
I'd prefer not to hear Jay's voice again rolling tough words in USA Team's favor. I had enough last year.
Sorry Jay, nothing personal, just you screwed up last year with you untruthfully comment in favor of USA Team. For those who wants to fight for the cause, just rewatch the matches and listen Jay commentating...
It's just my opinion so please take it like it is.

I want to hear more from you guys, who do you think should be in the booth?

Thanks

I find this quite interesting as I've often been accused of being "pro Europe" as well. Just for the record, my deal is to do my level best to call it like I see and hold nothing back. This hasn't always gone down well with some players but that goes with the territory. Listen to Johnny Miller do golf sometime. He is brutally honest and I think that makes him a great commentator for golf.

I thoroughly enjoy working on the Mosconi Cup, it's one of the highlights of my year. Jim and Jerry are consummate pros and a pleasure to work with. There is no way I can ever match Jimmy's enthusiasm. He can 'amp it up' to a higher level and that really makes the show much more entertaining imo. Jerry is a great analyst of pool and I often hear my exact thoughts coming out of his mouth before I can say them!

I spent the day yesterday with Ted Lerner here in Angeles City. That's when he informed me that he would be in Vegas for the Mosconi Cup. Bravo is all I have to say! Ted is a real pro that knows his place in the booth. He keeps the flow going and allows the "experts" to do the analysis. That said, Ted will often throw in some very insightful comments that are real zingers.

Jay, I have always enjoyed your steady calm voice, good observations and stories from the booth... However, your credibility as a 'judge' of commentating skills just took a MAJOR hit with me, when you said the following;...

'Shirley' You CANNOT be serious ?..Miller's monotone voice, and negative attitude, grates on my nerves like fingernails on the blackboard !..I will mute the sound, before I will listen to his description of ANY given shot...Sure, he was a great player, and he knows the game...But listen to him sometime, all he talks about, are the 'pressures' confronting almost EVERY shot a golfer faces, and his automatic follow-up,.."I told you so", if the guy hits a bad shot !

He will brag on a players great putting ability, and then if the player hits a horrible putt, he will say.."Yes, well that's the INTENSE Pressure, facing the guy's here on Sunday afternoon"!..He will just about come out and say the guy "choked"!..IMHO he is the worst sports commentator in ANY game, EVER !..Efren could do a better job at pool, speaking 'tagalog' to an English audience ! (sorry for the rant ! :sorry:)

Beg to differ my friend. There is a very good reason you see him working almost every major event in golf. He tells is like it is and holds nothing back. The great majority of golf fans appreciate his honesty and he gets accolades from most of the golf scribes as well. Of course you don't have to like him as I'm sure there are others who share your opinion.

Hope to see you in Vegas Sir Richard.

When Johnny Miller broke onto the commentating scene, I really did not like him. He was a brash SOB! But as with many newbies with potential, he grew, and he grew on me.
