I'll give you some greenies for this one!

Can't you start a new thread with this, and ask people to add money? I will add 100 $ myself to a fund like that if I get the DVD. So now there is already 1 100 $ in the pot.

Should we put up a date and make it a contest? If you "organize" it I will help spread the word around in Europe. All people who say they will add money must transfer them to you so you can guarantee the money. If no one makes it within the date, we (the sponsors) get our money back.

As I said, I am putting in 100 $ for this. Could be fun.

EDIT: I must spread some rep before giving to you. So if I hadn't given you the red one last time you could have gotten a green now instead :D Tough luck ;)

If we can raise maybe 5 000 $ for a contest like this, it will be great even if no one beats Mosconi. After 6 months there will probably be at least a dozen of runs over 300 available on DVD ;)

So get a thread like this started Mr. Barton :D
 
I am assuming John's 403 was on a 9' table which makes it even more impressive because Willie's 526 was run on an 8' table. Congratulations again, John.

Actually, Mosconi's 526 on an 8 footer was possibly more difficult. Less room to move, more intricate position and slower cloth (back in those days). In 14.1, the smaller table is actually a disadvantage.

Nope. 8 footer. I'm pretty sure about that, and it's been discussed in the straight pool forum before. Big difference between then and now is the equipment - especially the cloth and the rails.

Willie set the world record by running 526 consecutive balls without a miss during a straight pool exhibition on March 19, 1954. To this day the record has not been toppled and many speculate it may never be bested. A handwritten and notarized affidavit[6] with the signatures of more than 35 eyewitnesses exists as proof of this feat.

The record was set on a 4 foot x 8 foot Brunswick pool table with 5 1/2 inch pockets at the East High Billiard Club in Springfield, Ohio. However, today's standard for tables is much more difficult to play on than Mosconi's table, as today's standard tables are 9 foot x 4 1/2 foot with 4 1/2 inch pockets.

You are correct Mr. Blackjack. Someone posted elsewhere on AZbilliards the confirmation paper with witnesses of the run Mosconi had and it said it was an 8 footer.
 
Actually, that Wikipedia article is wrong - the 4.5 X 9 table ain't $hit compared to trying to run high numbers on a 5 X10. One of the biggest changes is in the break shot... try rocketing a ball in on a break shot on a 5 X10 and your ass will find the chair quickly. :D ... maybe Pat Howey can tell some horror stories of the bigger 5 X10 tables... lol

While the smaller table is a disadvantage to playing 14.1, the 5 1/2" pockets that Willie Mosconi played his record match on, made the playing field much more conducive for long runs than the current tables' 4 1/2" pockets. 5 1/2" pockets? Then put that table and those monster caverns in a low humidity conditions and many of today's athletes would break that record, IMHO.

From now on you're not allowed to play 14.1 without a video camera present. I know it wouldn't make you a millionaire, but a 400+ run on video would be a cash cow you could milk for the rest of your life.

Again, congratulations John. You have proven again what we already knew: You are THE MAN!:D

I've only had a few 200+ runs... that one was in March of 2000 on a very tight GC IV with brand new Simonis 860...

I broke my old high run of 204... missed a hanger.

FWIW, most players have their brain frying when they hit 70-80 balls.. the concentration and focus required to get into the triple digits is off the chart, those of us that have been there can attest to what I am saying... so IMO a 400+ run is astounding!

A few years ago, John was giving me a ride home from a tournament and I told him that I thought he was the best player in the world, but that he just didn't realize it yet. I hope he realizes it now. He's definitely one of the greatest players and nicest people in our game.
