Custom cues

Hi everyone,

Been playing pool for about 12 years but in the past year I start playing a lil bit more as I have time and money to invest in this passion of mine.

I currently own 3 playing cues : 5k1, Dyobir and a house cue butt + 314-2 which shoots pretty nice. I consider myself an average player with a lot of interest towards this sport.

Recently, the thought of having a custom cue got more and more into my head. Because for once, I'd love to have something unique and secondly, I truly believe that a custom cue will better represent me/my needs (might sound cocky but that's the truth)

I live in Toronto and it's hard to find a cue maker. I was lucky enough to come across Ron Benedict and as much as I like his work I want to keep my options open for now.

So, my questions for you AZers is what's the best cue maker out there when it comes to price/quality ?

Thanks,

Vlad

This question really depends on your budget.

I am currently waiting on a Bob Dzuricky custom. He is one of the nicest people to work with. Lead time is about 4 months, and you receive constant updates throughout. I am so impressed with him, I am going to order another before I even have my first. Check him out at http://dzcues.com/.

But there are also Many fine cumstom makers here on this site. They should be chiming in very soon.

Good luck.

Josh

My suggestion to you is that you discribe the cue want built. Then the cuemakers can either post their price on this forum or PM you. When you find a cuemaker whose price is right, ask if anyone has experience with this cuemaker. I think you will find that most plain jane customs will start at $300-$600..JER

This is a very subjective question. You could get 30 different answers and none of them would be wrong. It all depends on your personal tastes.

There of plenty of cue makers these days who make a good playing product at reasonable prices. You need to get your hands on some custom cues and play with them.

Either way, here is a list of some guys to check out. By no means are these the only cue makers that would fit your requirements. (I guess this is more a list of the lower end guys that I like. And to be honest, I haven't bought a cue in years so I may not have a grasp on their current prices.)

Jerry Rauenzahn
Leon Sly
Bob Frey
Tony Zinzola
Sugartree
Jeff Olney

We are in your price range but I'll leave it to some one else add our cues to your list...

Good Luck,

Thank you all for the feedback.

I agree, it is a subjective question but it was intended this way. I feel that this is the only way to get more info about cue makers (some that I'm sure I've never heard of), see their work and help with making my decision

WITH THE DROP IN CANADIAN DOLLAR AND COSTLY SHIPPING YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT CANADIAN CUEMAKERS OF WHICH THERE ARE QUITE A FEW NOW,YOU MIGHT FIND OUT YOU WILL GET MORE FOR YOUR MONEY,ONE OF THE GUYS ON HERE CALLED CANADIANCUE DOES SOME GOOD WORK PM ME IF YOU LIKE

I can't say who can builds the best cue for the money, for obvious reasons...

But I had my first custom cue built by Bob Frey. It can be seen here. The experience was extremely positive as I ended up with the best playing cue I can imagine getting for myself, again... the cue might not be for others, but ended up being wonderful for me, as it has exceeded both my own personal aesthetic and hit/feel expectations.
The cue took about two and half months to have built.

The best advice I can give, is to try a lot of sneaky petes by custom cue makers. I bought a Frey SP and played with it for over a year, and love it to this day. I had the opportunity to get a 2nd Frey SP for a great price and I enjoyed how it played as well. When decided to have a custom cue built I chose Frey for the job because I liked his SPs so much.

Hit up BigBusiness he posts on here and the last i talked to him he said there's some canadian cuemaker up there making jam up cues

IMO this post is better suited in the wanted/for sale section. There you will be communicating more directly with the customers of cuemakers, rather than the cuemakers themselves. Some non-cuemakers read and post here, but you'll get a better response in the other section.

If you narrow your choices to 6 or so CMs your considering, this question might make a nice poll for people to vote on for you.

Mr H

You need to ask this in the main forum as the "Ask the Cuemaker" forum is for asking cuemakers their opinions on things. So each of us probably feels that we make one of the best playing cues in the world, so this is not the forum to get a good answer to your question. And even in the main forum you will get dozens of different opinions. I would suggest doing this: go to www.internationalcuemakers.com and start clicking on the websites of the cuemaker members and see what each makes in your price range and to your specifications. Then order one that fits your needs. On my site you can even calculate the cost of your custom cue on the Create Your Custom Cue link.

Thanks for the feedback Mr Hoppe. I'll try and do that and see what I can come up with !

Thanks as well to Cueman,poolplayer2093 and everyone else who was kind enough to provide me with their valuable information !

Have your tried Layani?? I think he is canadian.

if i didn't build cues myself and i wanted a high quality cue at a great price i would buy an Olney.for your price/quality guidlines he would be hard to beat.

i think i saw a 6 pointer with one shaft in the wanted/for sale section for $500 yesterday and for the quality of his cues that price is unbelievable.
