Dale Perry Cue Question

I've had a DP for over 4 years and I love how it plays. Great value for the $$.

I would recommend buying directly from Dale himself though, $300 is way too much I think.

Here's the link to his ebay page: http://www.ebay.com/usr/dpcustomcues?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

I've bought three of them over the years for about $150-$175 a pop. They are very well worth the money. I bought 2 to give away to family and 1 for me. They all hit good. But don't pay $300 for it unless it's one of his older customs.

For the money they are pretty good cues. Whether you like this cue or not depends on whether you like the hit (just like with every other cue). Have you ever hit with a Dale Perry? It also depends on how much you care about what other people think as well because Dale Perry is hated by many.

Some very brief background. Many years ago Dale Perry was a custom cue maker who sold most of his cues through dealers, and they had high price tags. The one you have listed would probably have sold for $1000 plus. Then one day years ago Dale started selling his cues on Ebay, and cheaply--much, much cheaper even than the wholesale prices he had previously charged his dealers. Because of his new low Ebay prices and the increased volume of cues, the value of all of his previous cues (that were sold at much higher prices) dropped massively, including all the ones that were still in the hands of dealers who were now going to be stuck taking a big loss on them. All previous owners and dealers and a portion of everybody else was livid and didn't agree with what he did and now he is widely hated on throughout the pool world.

Yes, the quality of his cues has gone down a little since he started selling on Ebay, but the truth of the matter is that they are still decent cues but because of the background of what he did his cues are knocked more than what is really deserved IMO. For the money, they are pretty decent cues if you don't mind that 90+% of people that are familiar with Dale Perry cues are going to look down on them.

For the record, contrary to what Dale claims they are, not much of the rest of the pool world really look at them as true custom cues anymore. They are lumped in there with production cues. Just an FYI in case what you are after is an affordable custom cue. They aren't considered custom by most.

I have found a dale perry cue on eBay & I just wondered if some of the more experienced people here could take a look & tell me wether it's worth a punt or if I should steer clear:

That one is butt ugly. Just go on Ebay and buy a pretty one for $130.

And besides...that seller already sells too much stuff.

If you really want a Dale Perry Cue, send me a PM telling me what color you want.
I have about 50 of them. None of them will cost you $300.

The few DP cues I have worked on suggests that the glue he uses is not holding up.
or at least the ones I have repaired.

I bought a few (on speculation) about 7-8 yrs. ago, and kept one
for League play. Within 3 months the finish was cracking and
Inlays / Ringwork were popping. I contacted him and included
several good pics. He said I must have damaged the cue and
he would re-finish it for $150.00 ... That's what I paid for the POS !

If you just want a "beater" then buy a DP. You could, however,
buy a low-end McDermott and never have a problem.

I won a DP cue in a raffle. Until that day I had never heard of him. That cue plays great. I keep it in my rack at home for friends to use when they are over. Everyone that's used it likes the way it plays. I wouldn't pay more than $200 because that's the going rate.

I'm not a collector but I can sincerely feel for those that invested in his cues before he flooded the market dropping the price of his cues. But, that still doesn't change the fact that his cues are a great deal for the price.

Not from an Independent dealer it isn't.

Not for $300 it isn't. You can bid on 2 from Dale Perry for that price.

I have 2 of his earlier cues and my wife has one. Absolutely nothing wrong with them for the price that you can win most from on EBay.

Of course, they may have gone down hill a bit according to other members.

I have the earlier ones. Several years old. Still, they are EBay cues. Mine and hers have held the test of time 100%. If I remember, we paid well under $200 for each one.
Thats not a bad price for a cue, call it custom or not, if they hold up and play well. These particular cues do play nicely.

Anyway, stay away from the Independent Dealers, they are making money off of you as well. Go straight to the source and cut the middle man out.

BTW. Don't get overly excited when you see 1 of 1 on the fore arm. That usually means 1 of approx 1000 or more. He may use the exact design and make one little change somewhere and call it another 1 of 1.

If you do buy one and don't like it, expect to either keep it, sell it to a friend or another League member cause they have approx zero resale value on AZB.

However, I do like how every one of his EBay ads contain the statement, Retail value, $1800.00 Man, that would give anyone some serious wood.

I have an $1800.00 cue. Dale said so.

I've been playing with a Dale Perry ebay cue since 2008 and love it and it hits like a dream. All I have is retipped it and I am happy as a bull weavel in heat.

Bought a newer one months back with a stage 4 shaft and not as good hitting wise or feel...but still nice looking and worth the price.

Boll weevil.

Good restaurant, great deserts, but I think we are talking about cues at this time.

The Dale Perry cues I have are none older than 2 years. The first one I bought, the butt was very slightly warped, not enough to matter. Every other one I have bought for wife, myself, family, friends, have all been straight, the count is 7 at this time.

If you are a beginner or just low on money, these sticks will do you well. 300 is too much as others have said, pick one from his current auctions, if none look good to you at this time, just wait, he adds cues every day as the others are sold.

If you can afford 300 to 500 for a cue, talk with some of the custom cue makers, there are ones who will make a very nice stick, not very fancy, but very nice for that price.

I have a Dale Perry I bought about 5 years ago for $120. It's been a trouble free cue and I really like it and think it plays very well. I don't know how the present level cues are built, but I assume they're about the same quality as mine. $300 is way too much to pay. A good buy would be in the $100 to $150 range. Good luck in your quest for a good inexpensive cue.
