Danny D commentating US Open finals?

for anyone providing harsh commentary on Danny D's commentary, please take a minute to watch the following video and get to know this living legend perhaps a little better:

https://youtu.be/mSgfvJhQ6zw?t=561

When I watch matches that feature Danny in the booth, I consider the man in total, what he's accomplished in his life and what he has meant to our sport, in particular.

Aside from his many athletic and pool accomplishments, I find it truly amazing that a man travelling in the circles he has has never uttered a single swear word. How did he manage that? :grin-square:

I remember listening to him in the booth at Turning Stone a few years ago and he invited *anyone* who wanted a lesson to call his home room in Buffalo and he would be happy to do it for free. This was a sincere offer.

It's not been a well kept secret that if Danny was your friend then you had a true and loyal friend for life. :)

Try to think of Danny's age and all he's accomplished the next time he cracks one of his jokes you've heard twenty times before, or if he mis-calls an upcoming shot.

I, for one, have enormous respect and admiration for him and am delighted that he's still able to make it to some of these events, let alone provide some commentary.

Also, not lost on me is the loyalty displayed by Pat Fleming toward Danny. Old school, good friends, I really like it.

best,
brian kc

Dang Brian you and a few others have nailed it again. I will watch a stream just to hear Danny commentate. Danny is one of the men who has seen it all. When we think of the game and its history most of us have to imagine what is might have like, Danny was and still is the real deal. I could care less if his commentary may not be spot on, its worth a few bad calls to hear the mans dialog about the game that meant so much to him.

learning from seniors; danny deliberate was a great champion and fierce competitor in is younger yrs. he brings some old school to the booth that i find very entertaining. he offers his opinion and when he's wrong his reply usually has humor with a entertainment quality not given by our younger guys. i really like his attitude towards learning from our younger player. he's not an old dog that can't learn new tricks! keep on trucking!

I don't think that anyone is debating whether Danny is a great guy off the table, a Hall of Famer, a champion player, or a guy that has a ton interesting old-time stories.

But I look at it like this. If I'm in charge of hiring a commentator for a big tournament, I'm going to try to hire that BEST and sharpest commentators. I don't think that anyone can argue that Danny fits into either of those categories. I mean, if the goal is to hire "good guys", that have been around a long time, then that is fine. But don't anyone pretend that Danny is even close to being one of the best.

I will also say that Danny seems like the type of guy that would be great to be a friend with, hang around with, or get lessons from.

Well said. Keep in mind there's folks on here with proper manners capable of admiration and respect, then there are others without. I've heard it said this character trait is passed down maternally every other generation!

So there's a long thread singing the praises of Jeremy Jones' commentating ability. The semifinal now has Danny DiLiberto in the booth. Will he be doing the finals as well?

Suffice to say there are no threads singing the praises of Danny D's commentating.

Just do not put on Bill Gibbs. He sounds half drunk most of the time. I like Danny and the technical stroke tips presented by Mark. The best commentator is Darren Appleton. If you have not heard him you are missing the best.

You guys got to get off Danny. He's a legend and a gentleman. Probably a little past his best before date but hell we will all get old (if we are so lucky). Enjoy him while he's still around because he won't be forever.

Why people feel they need to start these threads are beyond me. The border and catty and poor taste. How would any of you feel if your read this about yourself?

In parting. Watch this and calm down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSgfvJhQ6zw

There are plenty of people with "proper manners" that can still say a guy is a horrible commentator and has been for at least the last five years.

Because a guy who bought the PPV wanted to know if the same awful commentating was going to be in the finale too. If you want to hear a story teller go down and listen to your local bullshitters at the pool hall. The guy was a good commentator at 14.1 and 1P up until about 5 years ago. Now he is just awful. He was always bad at commentating rotation games. It is simple, just listen to how Wilson commentates with him. He pretty much ignores him the whole match as he blabbers away.

I'm with the defenders of Danny D..

I agree that some of the commentary wasnt the best, Danny or otherwise.

Like Nick B said, if you make into your senior years, pray that you aren't senile, pissing into diapers and drooling all over yourself. Showing some respect goes a long way.

Years ago I had the unfortunate obligation of taking the keys out of my late Father's hands. Sorry Dad no more driving (he was getting just a little to scary for my liking). He hated me for it but accepted it. Nobody made fun of him. Let's just keep this in perspective. Mr. Fleming and Danny are good friends. He doesn't want to tell his friend he can't drive anymore.

I would rather hear him mistake the 3 for the 6 ball than have Barry B running his mouth for 90 minutes while the players and the place goes cold. Leave it.

Although I'm not a big fan of DD, I find him tolerable. Several others are much worse but yet, accu-stats could do much better. I liked the one match, forget which one it was but the team was Mark and Melling. Melling gave some good commentary with intelligent insight as well. JMHO

While Danny was a great player, this is more about the consumer rather than bashing Danny. I paid for a product and Danny's commentary actually took something away from the event. If I had a penny for every comment "he's shooting this one again for his backer" or "he just sold out" after playing a semi-reasonable safety, I would have made enough to pay for the stream. I have purchased several MIH events in the past but this next one I'm going to sit out if Danny is commentating. Some will say "just put it on mute." That is not what I'm paying for. I'll gladly pay half price for the stream and keep my speakers on mute the entire time but I don't think that's an option.

So you'd be willing to pay $2.97 per session rather than the outrageous sum of $5.95 to watch the best players in the world from the comfort of your own home? You should put your efforts towards getting a better job.

If he's talking about the MIH event it a whole lot more than $5.95, I also would be hesitant to purchase another MIH if the commentary is not as good as it could be, and at this time I sure would not think Danny is the best available.

I assumed MIH would be no more than the US Open-my bad if it is significantly higher
