Darren Appleton Responds to Money Match Challengers :-)

Darren:
You've presented a solid case for your ability to stand up when the big money is on the line.
I would like to see you match up with SVB in the USA and in Great Britain.
Here's the "dream" format: 8-Ball, race to 11, best three out of five;
10-Ball, race to 11, best four out of seven;
1-Pocket, race to 7, best three out of five;
14.1 Straight Pool, 200 points, best two out of three.
Table: Diamond 9' Tournament Table
I think you have the edge in the 8-Ball and in the 14.1; I think Shane has the edge in 10-Ball and in one-pocket.
Maybe you could throw darts or have a boxing match in case of a tie.
Then, I definitely know who would win!
Best of luck in your new home and I hope to see you at Derby City and Turning Stone.

Boxing is not a fair tie breaker.
They should play a board game, maybe chutes& ladders or connect 4. Monopoly would be ok too, but probably too long.

It's really not hard to see Daz is clearly one of the top few pool players on earth. I'd like to see him play Shane a derby style all around for the cash. I'm still trying to play Angie but she keeps ducking me.

Are there any pool halls in Iceland? Meet half-way on completely neutral ground...

The home/away perceived advantage/disadvantage is not the problem. Let us say that I was one of the backers then I would only want to put up £££ if I could actually see the match. For backers such as these, it is the spectacle they want and the bet gives added interest. I am not one of Darren's backers, btw, though I have backed players in the past many times.

It is similar, probably, to the desire of a horse owner to actually want to watch his horse run.

Surely it is the same in the USA?

goodl post

Lets get it on!!!!!!!

Darren is a good sport. He waited till after the Mosconi Cup to talk any trash, sounds like a real professional to me.

I think that this 8 ball match should be played on a tight Diamond BB and not a 9 footer. Considering SVB is the best 8 ball BB player in the states, and Darren in England, it should be for the making of a great battle

Sure, anybody with cash on the line would want to see their horse run. But, I think Darren said he lives in the US now. Clearly, it was wrong of the US team to say Europe cant play for money. That was just frustration talking, but still uncalled for.

I also agree with what most have said about the matchup. Rodney has heart and all, but would still be in trouble. He's a great shot maker, but his cue ball control just isn't strong enough. I'd rather see Earl play him, but I still wouldn't be betting. When it comes to big money gambling, I'm not sure how seasoned Shane is.

Seems you are in a chicken and egg situation. Darren can get huge money in the UK because that is where he has contacts. USA Player X from New York say probably has the same problem in that they can get big money if the match is in New York..

Oh well. Will take some working out!

And btw. I have seen Appleton play money many times and if I had to have a player play for my life, it would be him.

He hits em like Jim Furyk the golfer....

Easily the top Euro player currently.

home field advantage?

like so many others, thanks to Dynamite for posting this here.......

I am still not sure of what the advantage is playing on home soil.....
I know in other sports, the home crowd plays some part; maybe the home team is used to the playing field (table) .... I don't see how it has to do with the stakehorse wanting to be there watching the action .... I mean, if they are playing for BIG money, what's the big deal about buying a couple of plane tickets and coming/going over? That particular expense could even
be negotiated into the match....

Maybe it's the combination of home table familiarity, home crowd, and just a psychological disadvantage to foreign surroundings? I guess if they come to a poolroom in the U.S., there might be some sharking tactics from the
gallery who made bets....?

Moving large amounts of cash across borders can be a pain these days.

It's been a big problem for a long time.
To play a match for $10,000 in Britain, IF you win, deduct your expenses......
.....and if highly publicised, the gov wants 30. points.....
....you'll find you were laying 2 to 1....and that's when you're betting your own money.

I think that was part of the Dipster's consideration when turning down Daz.

There will be a brief intermission while a few players and their backers change into a fresh set of underwear and try to decide how much weight they are going to ask for.

PS Sorry for terrible spelling and grammar miss spent youth gambling in pool rooms ;)

This is the only legitimate excuse for grammatical inadequacies.

Kudos for taking the bull by the horn here. Maybe you can match up with somebody at DCC if you go. Also, seems strange Dippy backed out I thought he was a big timer!?!?! ;)

Seems lot of challengers coming my way and seems i cant play for money lol.

Just to set record straight.

I grew up playing money matches english 8ball from age 16-30 winning around 90%..then 2006 i switched to american pool ipt..Then 2007 I decided to play 9ball/10ball etc ..And played money matches all over the world and beat lots of top players in head sets and long races 30-35 and won lot more money matches in philippines than any other foreign player in the world and come away winner after spending 6 months there in 2007 Playing massive sets nearly everyday against great players .Then i won lot of matches in USA 2007 and 2008 traveling around. I continued to play for money all over world next few year.. In the middle of that 2009 i played a TAR match race to 100 didn't like the format and played awful against hatch 100-83 .. Then i played Bartram 2010 on tar race to 100 giving the 8ball playing 10ball and played bad 100-93 i run out of steam on last day taking nothing away from chris he did great to come back solid player. I previously beat Chris Bartram in a head set of 10ball gave him the 8ball. and beat him in a head set at 9ball giving him the 8ball.

Last few years I've not played many games because decided to focus more on tournaments which more important..Only one pocket games really and the odd rotation game and a challenge match on tar which not gambling because both get paid and we both played Awefull myself and shane That was jan this year so we was both rusty after xmas break.

But recently i got the bug to play big i mean BIG games again from one pocket /9ball/10ball/8ball/Straight Pool if the games and format are right. Reason why because i believe i better player now than few years ago and i missed playing them huge games when back against wall in foreign countries. I miss that buzz and i love money games.

I waited until Mosconi Cup was Over to respond to The Morris Challenge and then Hatch because i didn't want to get involved in Cat fights and take the focus away from the most important thing winning the Mosconi Cup and not let the team get affected...

But let me tell you this plenty of American Players including shane can get played against europeans but problem is that none of the Americans want to travel to Europe it seems? And always got to be on there terms...

Example Nikos the greek will play any american for huge money if they go to Greece...

I can play any American player in England for huge money also..

Plus be many more games against other players.

Since i Switched to American Pool 90% OF MY GAMES got played outside UK.
Its a big difference to play abroad but i don't mind i love a challenge.

And USA my home now so i know most my games be played here.. but anyone willing to play me in uk can play massive stakes. I was on verge to play dippy dave for $80,000 per man in 2010 one pocket giving him huge spot in England but he got cold feet and pulled out last minute and i even offered him a bodyguard and guaranteed his safety..
So BIG money in England if somebody wants to come get it.

Anyway next year i will play these guys in America but be less money than matches we could play in England.

But when am ready and settled into my house and put the hours in on my table i will start arranging matches... ranging from 10-20k a man....

I already said in another post i will play jeremy jones one pocket and i will give them plenty of notice when I'm ready.

Yes i will play hatch again 10 ball call shot 10 on break doesn't count 10-20k per man. no silly race to 100.. i like best of 5 sets races to 21 or something. Diamond table.

And Rodney Same game. Diamond table.

So just letting you all know i will play..But got lot to do next couple months away from pool.. So will let the guys know i want to play and contact each one of them or there guys When I'm ready .. so be patient please...

Thanks

2014 Could be big action year in states.:-)

This may actually be a good year for money games (for the top players) since there is a noticeable lack of tournaments on the calendar. What Darren says above is all true, He was constantly in the pits at DCC for the first few years he was here. Betting high too! Same when he was in the Philippines taking on some damn good players. I'm trying to think of who he DIDN"T play over there. Darren barred no one!

Look out for Jayson Shaw too. He will be handing out some lumps this year. Just watch! Melling and Boyes will mix it up too given the chance.
