That apology and $3.25 will buy the guy who is out $2450.00 a skinny vanilla latte at Starbucks.

Lou Figueroa

Lou,

Are you sure of that? Seems awfully cheap for Starbucks  .Who needed the $2450 anyway. Just walking around money for you and me  .

he, he.

Not sure, Lyn, that was a guess. (I just wave my phone in front of the thingie at SBs and they take what they want.) In any case, all this ends up being pretty much in counterpoint to DA's kvetching about "professionalism" in pool. I am somewhat surprised (translation: not really) to not see Daz here in this discussion. I guess it's easier to address the subject on FB where you have more control.

I think Darren can afford to reimburse you based on what he said last week.

If anyone thinks Darren Appleton's self-reported $150k/year is a great income, I'm guessing they have never paid taxes and never supported a family and saved for retirement on that income. Maybe I am wrong, maybe you guys earned that, and somehow managed to have a lot left over after living expenses and after Uncle Sam took his cut. Good for you if you can manage money that well.

If Appleton has to pay his tournament entries, expenses, airfare, and hotels out of that self-reported $150k/year, he is probably living well below an average keyboard puncher in Silicon Valley.

I am glad Appleton is satisfied with his $150k job, but it is not wealth by any stretch of the imagination. In my employment circle, no one with that income would hand over two, three, four, or five grand as some sort of feel-good 'class act".

And besides, the way Woodson was playing, Appleton was hardly a favorite to advance into the Calcutta money anyway. The gambler had likely lost his bet well before Appleton ever went to bed the night before.

Think need to know whether Darren means $150K gross (before tourney expenses etc) or $150K take home
I believe he means $150K take home which is after all tourney , travel expense. And that is pretty good for a pool player and for ex English 8 ballers who earns peanuts

Does anyone even watch it in the morning?

I wish I had a job that started at noon. lol

But, I guess working until 3am evens things out. :)

Why on earth would people play pool at 10 am in the morning?

Maybe we should learn from this and never schedule another pool match before 2 pm (I'd prefer 8 pm personally LoL). Does anyone even watch it in the morning?

Golf is a great morning game, tennis is too, but pool? hmmm, just doesn't seem that way.

Being a professional pool player is different to just about any other job. Daz made a mistake, has admitted it, apologised, and potentially paid for it with up to $12000 of his own money.

He is obviously upset and I doubt it will happen again but he is human.

For all the people who have never made a mistake or would love his job because it's easy try this scenario. Imagine you are a carpenter

First you can start work at 10am but you must pay $3000 for the priveledge and travel for 7 hours. You are not guaranteed to earn anything and you do not know how long you have to work for. Then when you arrive you have to produce better work consistently than the 15 best carpenters in the world to get paid.

Even if your work is pretty much perfect over 15 hours one day you can still face a 7 hour journey home $3000 out of pocket. Once in a while only if you are really the best you might earn a salary. Why would any player spend another $2450 making the expenses a total of $5450 meaning if he finished third he would only make a small profit?

If you make a mistake then the whole world knows and it is public all over the internet.

Not sounding so appealing now I think?

it is random who may oversleep and forfeit a match. so it can help you or hurt you. if one of the other four players overslept a different person would be here telling the story of how he got the shaft.

would you not buy into the calcutta if you were told in advance one of the players would forfeit but not know who. of course you would as it could go for you as easily as against you.

Great post.

Great post.. Thats the life of a professional pool player I'm afraid.. Everytime we tee it up and travel all over the place /world.. usually 2k out of pocket before hit a ball sometimes less sometimes more. depends what the size of the tournament is or where, And most events need to reach least last 8 to break even and as we know thats not easy at all..

Plus Got to beat a load of world champions Along the way, Then you got to deal with the good rolls and bad rolls and bad beats and sometimes lucky,Which every player in the world needs at a Professional Level. Then you got the Stress and The Pressure of Winning and trying to make your expenses back,Then trying to go further or win it..Further you go the less Pressure Because now your not out of pocket so can relax a little more and play your game knowing you can Eat and pay bills..Then you thinking about ranking Points to get invites back in future Events and stress of qualifying for other tournaments like invitational events World Masters, World Cup, Challenge of Champions Mosconi Cup et etc etc..

So Imo Pool playing for a living is a little more tougher than a 40-50 hour a job with a guaranteed Income at the end of the week,Regards pressure/Nerves,Stress,The unknown,Fear of losing.

Pool is a brutal living ,But luckily I'm one of the lucky ones thats had a lot of success which then helps with sponsors, but i don't make enough to retire anytime soon..and still pressure to keep the level of play year in year out to keep your Status in the game...

Regards the event i didn't know the schedule until i arrived.. I wasn't expecting 16 man event to be playing long grueling matches at 10pm then again at 10am.. so i was really Disappointed about the schedule From Day One.. But i respect the organizer he felt that was the best way to get it finished ..

Anyway play Friday night. I wake up for my 10am match sat.. Played 10am and 6pm and again 10pm in a high pressured match that i won 15-14 around 1am Finish.. So a quick drink with friends i leave around 1.45am now I'm starving so go McDonalds go to my room shower etc ,But afterwards feel wide awake and still coming down from the match ..So finally get to sleep around 4am set my phone Alarm at 5 different times between 8am-8.45am But Obviously i was in a Coma and didn't wake up.finally wake up 10.15 phoned organizer back after missed calls he wanted me to play if Skylers backer was ok with it,But he refused and that was that Forfeited. Absolutely Sick about it Especially that i was in final 4 and a great chance to win it Especially playing 8ball. But i Accepted the Decision Because Wasn't there on time.

Only myself to blame.
I Apologized to Dave Cole Room Owner and to the fans and people buying the stream to Watch me Play,I really sorry to the guys that buy me in the Calcutta :sorry:

I didn't go to the pool room because i was absolutely sick and Embarrassed all i wanted to do was get the next flight home which i did. Was back home for 7pm in Philadelphia.

It was a good event and Wonderful Pool Room With good People i look forward to many more events there in the future ,Just need to tweak the Schedule a little for future events like this.

I made a Genuine HUMAN mistake One which really makes me angry with myself .But thats life mistakes happen Everyday in all walks of life, Sadly None of us are Perfect and Human errors happen All you can do is learn from your Mistakes.

Thanks to Everyone for all your support :) Hope you all have a great Week.

anyone saying he should pay back the culcutta buyers must be joking. they took a GAMBLE, even if he was able to make it to the match with three hours sleep I'd give skylar a good chance of winning, just bc he lost the match as a forfeit doesnt mean he couldnt have lost playing, a loss is a loss. you gamble you lose/win. you don't want your feelings hurt take up another hobby, this is pool, not crochet. what the hell is wrong with people. that's exactly the reason why kids grow up little shit heads these days, no one can accept a loss without crying, jeez. the man apologized to everyone, at least he had the heart to do so, in the pool world its a shark eat shark world, any other player would have just walked away without even looking back.

Great post Darren thanks for the explanation
If you live long enough, you'll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you'll be a better person. It's how you handle adversity, not how it affects you.
Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.

And wow what a great match you played vs Jesse Bowman he really came with it but in the end you showed what makes you a true World Champion.

Thank you for your post Darren and sharing your story here with AZ members. You are a stand up person and pool player. I wish you best of roll's in the future my friend.

I gotta say when I'm sleeping and it's a good sleep after a long hard day, I have no chance in hearing my cell phone alarm. It's very understandable how Darren did t wake from it.

it's a shame how it ended for him and I gotta say the OP handled it well. It makes me wonder though, if Darren did go back to the pool room and apologize in person, would it have went down the same route. Being face to face at the time may have made the situation more intense and someone might even tried to punch someone's lights out. NOT SAYING IT WOULD'VE HAPPENED, but always a possibility in the heat of the moment.

my feelings are that the apology was sincere and Darren made a major mistake which he will regret for a while. Hopefully he learns from it and it should be the end of the story. Glad to see he finally replied to the thread.

Thank you for making my point on net versus gross. He lives in Allentown, PA, right?

Appreciate the explanation. It answers questions that I'm sure some were wondering, me included....................

This is so true what is highlighted in red. When you have played competitive pool all day long and then try to unwind to get to sleep, you're still seeing pool balls dancing in your mind. You just cannot turn it off. It is hard to get your body relaxed enough to go to sleep. Seen this many, many times with one I know who used to play competitively.

No offense to the tournament host, as I respect anyone who invested in pool. This is a rarity and a godsend to all. With that said, nobody should have to play pool at 10 a.m. in the morning after being up late at night because of exactly what is highlighted in red above. If you play pool for a living, you might understand this better.

For those who are comparing pool to their 9-to-5 jobs, yes, pool is a job for some folks, but in no way is it the same. You must perform well in order to get paid in pool; in most cases, you must win, place, or show to break even for expenses. As was stated, especially in high-profile events, you're stuck $2,000 before you hit the first ball.

To Darren, I'm pretty sure if Angie had been by your side, there is no way this would have happened. ;) Further, it is true that most of the bashers on AzBilliards are usually the first ones standing in line to get an autograph, have their picture taken with the pro player, or better yet, ask you to give them an autographed picture or sign a cueball and mail it to them for free.

Congratulations to Skyler. This was a great win for the kid, especially double-dipping Shane. Thank you to the pool room owner who hosted this event and added funds to the purse to make it happen. And thank you, Darren, for being brave enough to post in AzBilliards, the place where pro players are deemed as pariahs and no-good bums. Stay on Facebook. The air on Facebook is easier to breathe for the pro player.
