Gambling money has no home. It's there for the taking.
Lou did you buy mutual funds with Barron's money??? I'm sure most of it went right back into the game sonehow.
Without action pool isn't the same. Compare needing to runout to win 800 versus win a break and run patch. Come on let's be real.
...this be my final post on this matter ,and thanks for all support appreciate it.
Darren
Sorry, but I beg to differ with you Tex. I will agree that Darren does not "owe" anyone anything. But that does not mean he doesn't have any moral responsibility to make things right with them in some way. Just to say "I'm Sorry" doesn't really cut it here.
Among real gamblers there is a moral code, that allows them to loan money on a hand shake. Their word is their bond! And they know when they are wrong and need to do something to right it. In this instance Darren pretty obviously screwed up and it was potentially very costly to someone else besides just himself. This is not about a missed ball or anything like that, so please save that conversation for someone else. Missing a match is very different than missing a ball! Plus Darren was already guaranteed money back in the tournament, so he didn't come up empty, like the guys who bought him in the Calcutta. He was in position to offer them something.
The OP is a class act who doesn't whine about his losses and I respect him for that. Is he happy about what happened? Obviously not. He feels let down by Darren and well he should. Will Darren reach out to him I don't know. It's on his conscience, that's for sure. Stuff like this you don't just sweep under the rug and say tough luck. If you're a man you try to make it right somehow. And that somehow should include more than just an apology.
I know Darren will read this and be unhappy with me because I'm not the one involved. But if he (or anyone else) asked me what I think I will tell them. And I did right here!
So Imo Pool playing for a living is a little more tougher than a 40-50 hour a job with a guaranteed Income at the end of the week,Regards pressure/Nerves,Stress,The unknown,Fear of losing.
is there a difference between buying someone in a calcutta and just betting on him on a match? if i placed a side bet on appleton in this match and appleton forfeits, does he now owe me money? now the guy you made the bet with might let you off the hook cuz the match never actually took place but if he didnt and you had to pay him out, does darren owe me money now? that's essentially what the calcutta is. you have zero influence on how the player does in the tournament so you're just placing a bet on a player to win. just like darren did not force anyone to bet on him in this match, he did not force anyone to buy him in the calcutta so i dont see how he owes anyone more than a sincere apology since it's clearly an accident and mistake on his part.
if people aren't obligated to grease him a percentage if he wins (even if he didnt buy himself in the calcutta) i don't see why he should have to give them some money in a situation like this. they didnt put money up to help him or anything, they put money on him to try to make money for themselves. they're not backing him or anything so he doesn't owe them anything more than an apology. to me, suggesting otherwise is incorrect.
before everyone says that i didn't have any money in this calcutta, i'd like to point out that i've bet on people that quit in the middle of a set before and i didnt think they owed me money. it was my fault for betting on them. i was trying to make money off someone else's work and in those cases it did not go in my favour.
Honestly Darren, how would you know?
You cost a guy a few thousand dollars of potential earnings in a pool tournament.
When I go to work I am dealing with being on the front lines of production for a oil sands mine that produces many millions dollars worth of oil each day. My job is to assess the quality of the material being mined and ensure that the quality of the material is properly identified so that processing can successfully extract the oil from the mined material and not lose it to coarse tailings. If/when I have a bad day or a mistake is made it is not measured in the thousands, a small error easily costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and a larger error quickly climbs into the millions "very" quickly. I have seen things happen that cost more in a single day then the entire added money in the whole of pool for the last 10 years combined.
You want stress? Try dealing with a real time situation where a million dollars of oil is being lost every hour and you are running around a mine analyzing the material being sent to the breaker trying to determine the cause for the bitumen losses to coarse tailings, all the while having top execs and mine operations personnel breathing down your neck expecting you to fix everything. Try dealing with a situation where something was missed and it caused a major processing issue that shuts down the whole mine and now you are going to be answering questions as to why production had to be ceased and the company lost millions of dollars due to people were sitting in haul trucks on the side of the haul roads and electric shovels were sitting idle in the pits when you were "supposed" to be producing 850 l/s of oil.
Don't be so sure your job warps many of those people working those "paycheck" jobs with regards to "stress". A lot more stock brokers end up jumping out of windows than do pool players.
Not to mention, to people who think 150k a year is peanuts and tough to live on... what freaking planet are you actually living on atm? The average household income in the USA is in the $52,000 range give or take a couple grand. A very small percentage of the population is making 150k a year and if you are struggling to live on that than maybe you need to relook at how you "spend" money. Very few people will "ever" make that type of cash and those people that do are normally in the more senior positions in specific industries.
Anyone who says things like "gee, I could never live on 150k a year...!" is seriously out there. I live in a city where the average household income is probably the highest of any actual working city in North America (not including old money boroughs of the already extremely rich) and people here making 150k per a year are doing just fine if they are not going crazy spending their money on a 1.5 million dollar house, 2 quads, and a new Ram 3500 and Porsche every couple of years or funding a recreational drug habit.

When a professional pool player has pool earnings of $150,000, that's not what his personal income is. If he spent $75,000 in related expenses, then his income that would be comparable to the typical employed person whose gross pay is $75,000.
I think Darren is one of the very few who actually do make a comfortable living. He's an excellent player at all games, and is a class act as well. I don't know him well, but well enough to know that feels worse about this than most can imagine. I'm certain that his expectations of himself are higher than what others would expect of him. To me, that's a sign of character.

just wonderin'
what a thread....
What more do you people want than an apology that has already been given? Darren missed out on his INCOME; not a wager. I think he feels WAY more sick about oversleeping than the OP.
bummer that it happened DA....good luck in future events.
