BTW-- quit laying down hustling guys playing banks...8 in a row...come on man show your game..let it out...

I remember it so well because it was the 1st time (I maean only time "the hustler in me") I banked out from the break. I don't play the game much anymore but am willing to try for a few beans.

I don't even play as good as a girl anymore.

Thanks for the info on the Atlanta scene.

Hey, I resemble that remark!!! (it sucks not being able to play)

BTW, if you find a place & need a roommate, let me know... Not only will it put me closer to home, and closer to a "real" pool room again, but I'm freezing my ass off up here!!! :D Best of luck in not only finding a place but in the NUTS endeavor. Contrary to recent happenings today, there's still people here that are behind you & believe in what you do.

Never said that. Show me the quote.

It was a characterization, not a quote. And, Teacherman, I just realized how insensitive I was: I rebuked you on National Teachers Day!

My .02

Mike Janis as the TD/Organizer should make money. As long as the players are happy, and the pool room is happy they can decide whatever cut they want. Its ridiculous to not get an organization fee.

Teacherman - made some valid points. But on the whole, when valid responses has been made he basically does not address them. Furthermore, as a businessman myself, i can understand why Mike Janis would not want his information disclosed. I recall one post where you questioned whether the other pool tourneys in existence DIDN'T know all of MJ's cuts. I would GLADLY place a wager that although some might know MJ's exact percentages and numbers in a tourney, definitely, not ALL do. For a person who preaches honesty and integrity you sure do a lot of biased reporting. Secondly, you said you would gladly post your numbers online? If i were you, I might. You operate a business where your competitors are only the pple in ur region who have existing pool rooms or plan to open one (which is capital intensive). For MJ, he posts those simple numbers and anyone with some connections or a desire, might be able to start his own mini-tournament. How bout this, why don't you ask MJ to post all his numbers, and if he does, in exchange you compile a detailed report on your original bplan, your capital investment, your variable and fixed costs per month, growth, turnover, and all other measures of your business in a nice report and send that to every individual in your pool room's area who has an interest in business or pool rooms. Because, in fact, what you are asking MJ to do is nearly the same because the Viking Tour/NUTS will be national, and the azbilliards site is a collective for pool lovers - hence, the majority of members on this forum can look at it themselves and say "hey, theres low barrier of entry, i can do it myself, screw the NUTS". My business operates in a competitive industry, there is no way in hell i will show my numbers to any body except my trusted assistant and accountant.

Personally, I don't see why this conversation has continued. MJ and Teacherman have differing opinions. So just let it go. If Teacherman doesn't think its a good opportunity then he should pass it, if another pool room does, then they will agree to it. If its a neighboring pool hall and hte tournament is successful Teacherman will eat his words and kick his own ass, if its not successful he will laugh his ass off. Who cares?

...I hear people talking about the tournament and who matched up and what the room is like and so on and so on. Keeping people talking about your room is word of mouth advertising. Yes you may not see the top players come again until the tour comes back, but reputation is what builds a solid room. If your room is the place that brings in the tour stops into your city, then your room will be the one that has the reputation of being the serious place to play...

This and a quarter might get you a phone call but it won't build your billiard room.

Considering the last experience I had with Teacherman I really did not want to respond

I'll spare you from having round 2 with me. I prefer intelligent debate.

Your $.02 worth that has even less value.

Will never happen. And, I hope he comes to my area. Gives the riff raff somewhere to go.

Less riff raff for me to deal with the better. Especially when they are preoccupied, drinking water at my competitions room. :D

I for one would die to have a Viking event around my area, but it was that little stipulation in the original post that said no replies from the areas that Planet Pool (amongst others) occupy. Don't get me wrong. I totally love PP, but it is that women play for free thing that makes me want to jump into the car and drive to IL to go two and out. But alas, life keeps getting in the way. I say the more the merrier! :p

If you have to add 1000$ I think your bar sales would be well over 1000 to cover that have some specials think of something. I don't your hall would suffer from it really; they are done by what 8? Plenty of time for the bangers to come in sounds to me that is all you are getting...

Wait its teacher man... so nothing will get through his thick skull. Poor me, ignore this post teacher I thought I was talking to someone worth talking to.

Don't worry, the grammar or spelling or typing is so bad I have no idea what you're saying.

Do you play pool?

If you get a wild hair you ight try Auburn AL or the surrounding area. Its not a metropolis by any stretch but its good place to live and raise a family. I moved from there for work but will move back. Theres not alot of pool action if your looking for that but theres not in ATL either.
frankncali is right - Auburn is a great place to live, a college town located a quick hour-and-a-half, all-interstate drive west of Atlanta, and much nicer than most cities in Alabama. That's where I grew up and there are many things I miss about the area, including popping down to the white sand beaches of the Gulf for a weekend and the sunny climate. (Plus, when I lived there I could drive to most of the WPBA events at that time; living in Seattle everywhere is far away....and oh, the RAIN!!)

One more thing: The property taxes in Alabama are (pun intended) dirt cheap! :)

Hey, I resemble that remark!!!

Hmm, no offense and I dont mean to single you out as I have seen lots of people on this board (only) using that exact quote but to "resemble" something is to have a likeness towards it. When you say you "resemble" that remark you are in effect saying "Hey, I am similar to that remark!!!" which I am sure is not really what you are trying to say. The proper saying is "Hey, I resent that remark!!!" which is much more the point you are really trying to achieve.

Main Entry: re·sem·ble
Pronunciation: ri-'zem-b&l
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): re·sem·bled; re·sem·bling /-b(&-)li[ng]/
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French resembler, ressembler, from Old French, from re- + sembler to be like, seem, from Latin similare to copy, from similis like -- more at SAME
1 : to be like or similar to
2 archaic : to represent as like

Main Entry: re·sent
Pronunciation: ri-'zent
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: French ressentir to be emotionally sensible of, from Old French, from re- + sentir to feel, from Latin sentire -- more at SENSE
: to feel or express annoyance or ill will at

Not trying to be a stick in the mud but after seeing quite afew people using "I resemble that remark" on this board it is time to say something.

Teacherman, there is no way in H E double toothpicks (Using language TM can understand) that I would ever bring the Viking Tour to your room. In fact, I am going to search out your competitors and give them a good deal just to get your goat.

Can anybody recomend one of these rooms or another?
They are all in the St. Louis area.
Mr B's ?
Crystal Billiards
Cue & Cushion
Pink Galleon?
Ride The Rail?
Washington Billiards ?
Andy Quinn's room ?
Sharky's ?

Mj

Mr. B's---a bar
Crystal Billiards--best of luck
Cue & Cushion--no food or alcohol & hasn't had a major tournament in the 20 yrs I have been going there
Pink Galleon--guess all these champions won't mind playing on pink cloth under a black light??
Ride The Rail--no food, no alcohol and smart enough to run tournaments themself
Washington Billiards--closed
Andy Quinn's room--now understands he can make more money paying for a $500 band for the night then paying money to add to a tournament
Sharky's--had a Viking tournament a few months ago. Someone call Lutman & see if he profited $500?

And Mike, I can usually read people real well. I have never met you in person but I think the reason that you don't want to give your 'fees' out in public is that they are not standard across the board. Sometimes you must charge $500, sometimes $1500. And you, of course, wouldn't want one owner upset that he overpaid. This is completely understandable.

Also, you think that having a tournament at another establishment will 'get his goat'. I can't stop laughing. Please do. You want the phone number to Pink Galleon? I'll look it up for you.

This has to go down as one of the smallest thinking posts of all time. Add $1000 and do bar sales over the $1000. Hey 16 year old kid....do you think that when you sell something at a bar, it costs the owner zero? I know you have spent your entire life opening up your mother's refrigerator and eating for free but that is not how the real world works.

Spoken like a true businessman. I agree that there is no money in the 'pool players'. Get those 20 something date night crowd, college professors and others with 'discretionary income'! Besides, the riff raff often make it hard for the others to have a good time.

JMO. The added money is better spent to recruit these players, not the tournament crowd. Unfortunately. Cause I enjoy playing pool and do so often, but can't believe there is any PROFIT in hosting tourny's and the real 'players'.

JMO, ICBW

Attention Mike Janis: Let's do this. When & where is your next tournament? What is the entry fee? What if/any are the green fees? What is the added money? Then after the tournament, please post the payouts for the tournament & how many players showed up. Then post the payout for the calcutta and what the entire calcutta pool was. This should clear your name simply enough. Special note: Please don't add the calcutta money into the tournament payout to say that the winner received $1800 when it was $800 in tournament money and $1000 in calcutta. I notice on this AZ site that tournament payouts are posted in this manner all the time.

Good point, but I think in this case Timberly really did mean that she resembled that remark, given that she is a girl!! ;)

I made an offer and it was accepted so nothing needed to happen after that except work out details between the parties involved. I DO NOT bullshit and if I lost on the deal it wouldn't be the first time and I damn well know it wouldn't be the last.

Since Teach wouldn't let up on Mike after that it doesn't look like there will be a Viking event at "Teachers" any time soon...so in the interest of goodwill...I'll send a cue to raffle off for the next charity event you do that watchez was talking about. Just let me know what and when it is.

Too bad you guys were so crappy to Mike, you lost out on a good offer.

Anyway, let me know about the charity event.

I can't believe that you've never heard this play on words.

She meant to say what she said, and it is an intentional play on "I resent that". It's old, but handy.

Substituting 'resemble' for 'resent' kinda reverses the meaning, which is where the humor comes from (often it is self deprecating humour). The really funny thing is, when one has to explain it, there is no humour left ...

You are a wiseman. Rather than acknowledge the two rebuttals i laid out with regards to your other posts on this board.

1) Send out your business plans and all your margins, customer turnover, and costs to all individuals in your area who are businessmen or who want to start pool halls or are your competitors.

2) Wager that not ALL pool tours in the US are aware of MJ's cuts. You said so yourself that all the pool tour td's knew his percentages, right?

you decide to take a potshot at my closing which has nothing specific against your arguments. Your wisdom in avoiding the crux of my post shows you to be a smart man, because you sure know when you are beat...so once again, i imagine you will run off with some non-related smart-assed remark and not address the main issues.

You might say my post isn't worth much, but i know my mouth doesnt smell like a big heap of bull poo.
