Dennis Hatch

Does anyone know why Dennis Hatch didn't play in the Predator 10 ball tournament? I know a few pros that think he should've won 5 world championships by now. I know what happened in his past couldn't have helped much, but when I was younger my dad told me that Dennis Hatch was going to be one of the best ever. So I guess what I'm trying to say is what happened to him?

Not to be too analytical. I have known him since he was 14. His improvement was so fast you could not believe it. In one year he went from playing guys with the 7 to giving the same guys the 7. I think the game just came to easy to him, he never had to work at it. His skill just seemed to come spontaneously. The problem is, as a pro they can all play. The difference between the top players is not very much. To win consistently you need that something extra that only a few players in any sport will have. Some are champion's and some aren't. I doubt Dennis has the dedication to really be a champion and I don't think it can be faked. You really have to want it bad. At one point when he was playing really good, he was ready to quit to be a boxer. I am not that sure pool means much more to him then a means to an end. Or maybe a dead end.

Interesting analysis. :)

There's one thing and one thing only that lights Dennis Hatch's fire!

Does anybody know if Danielle accompanied him to Vegas? :grin-square:

If not for his dad basically exploiting him, taking him out of school and on the road when he was only 15, I doubt pool would have been his vocation. He was practically forced to play it seemed. There is plenty on here who knew Greg Hatch and I am sure have opinions of him. There was a guy you didn't trust under any circumstances. I think for Dennis, pool may not be a love to him, but at this point it is all he knows.

Before the match up the other week, I was talking to a couple of pros about it and they all said that Dennis has so much raw talent its unbelievable. I found it a little strange because although I know DH can play I never really thought of him as a great player just average pro player really (no disrespect to him at all). But after listening to how much respect the other pros had for him I have to have a different opinion that he has just slipped under the radar so far.

For the most part if you talk to most pros and ask them about another player they will say something like "He's good BUT......." So to hear nothing but compliments says alot about DH.

I don't now DH personally so I can't even begin to figure out why he has not won more major events but I know now that he has the ability to.

didn't he take second place in the us open at the age of 17?

About a month ago I asked both Niels Feijen and Ralf Souquet about Hatch, and they said that when he is on he is one of the most talented players with the most powerful stroke out there.

Dennis took a hiatus from pool for a spell, and as was stated earlier in the thread, he was thrust into it as a young boy. In all of the older pool periodicals from the '80s, Dennis Hatch's name was in the headlines for junior champs, along with Michael Coltrain, Shannon Daulton, and Johnny Archer. He was winning tournaments left and right.

During the '80s, when action was prevalent, Dennis' father and uncle did show him the ropes. He also went on the road with several well-known action players. There were some occupational hazards during the '70s and '80s for pool players. It seemed to be a societal norm to alter one's state of conscious at will, and believe you me -- where did that expression come from, "believe you me"? :grin-square: -- pool players were popping white crosses, black beauties, and snorting their cocaine to stay up all night long and play pool. I am not saying that Dennis did this, but this is the era he grew up in during his formative years.

Dennis is an old-school pool player who today is taking a stab at being a tournament soldier, and by all accounts, everything he plays in, he seems to do well. He currently is the pride of New York, with a strong backing of followers.

His most loyal follower today is his girlfriend, Danielle. He would melt quicker than ice on a hot summer's day without her by his side. The two of them together, though, make a good team. I do think she keeps Dennis flying straight! That is why I asked if she was in Vegas with him when he played Appleton.

This is my "Ain't Love Grand?" photo of Dennis and Danielle! It was taken in 2004, a short time after they first fell in love! :lovies:

I don't know if he came 2nd at the US Open or not to be honest. But when I say won big tourneys I mean like winning the US Open or a World Championship. This is not a know on him FYI, All I am saying is that I found out what a great talent he really is.

Here's Dennis' Uncle Mark. I found him to be charming and fun to be around! :)

Uncle Mark, Frankie White, Keith McCready, and a virgin dice thrower young'n decided to give Turning Stone Casino craps a try. $15,000 later, everybody had a smile on their face!

And here's the happy dice-throwing crew. We were all there for the $25,000 9-ball Tournament.

Too bad Ryan and Sugar Shane didn't join the Dice Throwers Committee. From left to right, Keith, Uncle Mark, Ryan, Sugar Shane, and the virgin dice thrower. LOL!

Man, did we ever have fun. Ryan McCreesh would have been in with us, but he was staying close to the tournament room. He ended up coming in second place at that tournament.

That really was a fun pool vacation. Keith had black chips falling out of his pockets. :grin-square:

Bingo! She was here with him during the Appleton match and left the day before the Predator Ten Ball started. Dennis was soon to follow.
