Ding, Ding, Ding ........ warning bells went off for good reason.

Last night was a league night for me and after league was over I decided to play a game or two just for practice and as I was about to put quarters in the table a getleman walks over to me and asks if I want to play a few, he offers to split cost on the first game and I say "Sure, why not."

I hadn't even payed attention to this guy during the night but noticed he was in the bar, in the pool area. I think he was playing a few games on the tables away from the tables where we were playing our league matches.

So our first game I let him break, he breaks dry, but really spread the balls out nicely. I proceed to run down to last object ball and had to play a bank to try and get position on the 8. I could have cut in a shot fairly easily but knew the only way to get a decent position on the 8 was the bank. I double titted out the bank just barely missing it, he proceeds to almost run out but slightly missed on his last object ball but noticed during his game his sound stance/stroke/etc. You could tell this guy knew how to play.

We play a few more games and sometime during these games he makes a comment about how he's only been playing for a year and a half (my BS meter maxxed out) he wins one, I win one, both run-outs and then wait for it ......... " How about $5/game." he says. DING, DING, DING.

I hesitated for a second thinking to myself, (Is this guy trying to hustle me?) but I said "Sure why not." and decided to try and buckle down and give him my best game to see how things go. We go back and forth for 5 games (of which it was all but run out's on both our parts) and after the 5th and he's up $5 only due to a flubbed 8 ball shot on my part he asks if I'd like to up it to $20/game and if it weren't for the fact I was light on cash on hand and the loud/annoying karaoke playing in there I would have probably went for it just for the experience.

I could tell he smoked because I could smell it on him when he passed by closely a few times during playing and I smoke as well so I ask him to go out for a smoke and we get to talking outside and find out he's a Trucker from Georgia (I saw a rig out in the lot when I got there earlier in the night) and he tells me he likes to play the best players he can find to learn more and more and he admits to asking the barkeep who was the best player in there and barkeep points me out. As we were talking outside he talks about playing other players for $50 - $100 per game in his travels around the country and how one of his better friends used to be a road player for big cash stakes, etc.

Anyway........we part ways after that and as I'm driving home I recall a couple shots he made but put himself in bad position when he was down to the last object ball and I remember thinking that it was as if he did it on purpose because there was no reason to get that out of shape. Everything about his game tells me he was an even better player than he showed in the $5 games, I would guess he's a Master player at worst. I'm about 90% sure this guy was a regular hustler in his travels and maybe some of you out there have run into him. He's a tall lanky guy wearing cowboy boots and belt buckle ........ I wish I could remember what he told me his name was. I'd say he was late 40's in age.

If nothing else I hope some of you enjoy the story here and remember to watch out for a tall lanky cowboyish truck driver in his late 40's who says he's only been playing for a year and a half ........ this guy can play.

I agree, it does hurt a persons action quite a bit when someone posts a APB on the net.
I understand the OP intentions were good (in his eyes) but, this guy wasn't really trying to hurt you in that game, he was just looking for action. He probably realized you were not going to be big game and moved on after you balked at a game for 20.

You would have been better off to tell your story with out giving out the details of the individual.

That's why hustling is dead, because of knockers like you.

LOL......Hell, I'm not knocking it at all Tommy. Was just telling the story. I just wish I wasn't so light on cash right now because I'm layed off for a few weeks from work and have my state tourneys coming up shortly otherwise I would have had no problem dropping $50-$100 to a great player/nice guy just for the experience. Just as long as the wife wouldn't find out. She's an accountant. :sorry:

BTW.........your pic looks a LOT like the guy I was playing, his name might have even been Tommy, I just can't remember ......... and the guy claimed he's never heard of AZbilliards ......... hmmmmmmmmm.

Was this the guy? Seriously though no need for knocking as in nice story, just delete the last part with the descriptions....

Hmmmmmm...........seems there is a certain protocol I wasn't aware of about action/road players. My bad.

All the best.

Those of us not into the sleazy hustler sub culture have no honor owed to those on the road trying to steal our wages. You see we don't really care if these guys ever get action from us or any other "fish" or not. I wish he would have posted a picture of him and his real name. Well at least this one appears to have had to get a real job to eat although he is thin by all accounts. DING DING, reality check!!

I have never had a problem with guys looking for action. We're all big boys and girls and if we want to play for $$$ we should know what we can/can't afford to play for. Had I run onto this guy a month ago I would have had no problem playing $20 games, just bad timing on his part for this particular night I guess.

I can't say I've never hustled. Years ago I used to take some of the college kids $$$ in Iowa City more than a few times. Just wait for the alcohol ego to kick in with some of those kids and bank some cash. My level of $$$ games is in the $5 to $20/game or set because I'm just a poor working stiff who loves to play pool.

I'm just your average A level player who can string together a few runs in a row when I'm lucky and I just love to play. Job/kids/wife/etc are my #1 priorities, not pool, but I realize their are some guys out there who eat/sleep/breathe this game and if that's their thing, more power to them.

Are these hustlers forcing you to gamble or do you have an option to pass? It's nice that you are speaking for the whole community with "we don't really care". It almost sounds like you got hustled once and are bitter about the outcome which didn't go your way.

Unfortunately, the world is "a-changin". I really don't see the need for beating on IA8baller.

The life of a pool hustler has gone the way of cowboy bank robber. It is simply no more.

We recently had a top pool player come into Buffalo Billiards in disguise and I mean a real good disguise, family in tow, tennis player visor etc. Anyway, I wasn't positive who he was because he kept giving me only side glances. He isn't really well known at our pool hall but he had been there only 15 minutes when the room started buzzing. I don't usually say anything to anyone unless asked but no one was asking me. They were telling me who the player was.

With smart phones, cell phones, player finder data bases and the like, the day of sneaking up on someone is over. Sure, you might sneak up on someone once in a while but to do it for a living is a chance of slim and none.

Even more recently, he returned and found a game with one of our locals and got stuck early by giving up a heavy spot, got even and that was the end of the action.

This forum is composed of our peers, people who enjoy reading about and writing about pool. IA8baller is one of us. I enjoyed his story and smile at his description of the trucker.

oh come on now, it's not like there's only one tall lanky 40s lad in the whole world lol

That's what I was thinking. Who cares if he described him a little bit. Im sure if you ran across this guy he would make your pockets lighter. Best part is you wouldn't even realize the connection till he was miles away

I enjoyed your story. No name, no pic, no hint of where he is headed next...to call this a knock is a stretch at best.

And this opinion is wrong, why? Because hustlers need to be protected, so they can take advantage of someone else?

Wow. Honor sure is old fashioned, I guess. If the guys doing the hustling need to be protected from those awful fish, sure are dark times.

What's wrong with trying to play a fair game? Why can't you show up and say let's play, without hiding your speed? Oh, that's right, gotta honor "the hustle".

All of you taking this opinion hopefully don't pile onto the "Apa is full of sandbaggers" bandwagon, cuz this ain't any different. Actually, its worse, taking advantage of someone for cash. Yes, we're all grownups, and no one should gamble anything they can't afford to lose, but c'Mon...what's the joy in beating someone you are obviously much better than? Because you successfully conned them into betting something they wouldn't have, had they known your true speed?

And people wonder why pool has a bad image?

good story!

The guy might be a hustler but he wasn't working at it last night. First sign, asking who the best player was and then playing him. Most hustlers wouldn't ask and if they did they certainly wouldn't play him first. Blowing shape on the last ball over and over is too obvious also. I saw Mike Massey playing on some home tables right after Katrina at a benefit before putting on an exhibition. Ten dollars to play him and you got a signed pool ball if you beat him playing eight ball. I watched him for an hour or two and he missed a ball twice before shooting at the eight ball. He hooked himself where he didn't have a shot at the eight ball every game! Would have kinda liked playing him in the evening, I had played him a little long ago in a real setting, but I had no interest in the game he was playing.

I'd say the guy you shot with is a pretty good guy that is on the road and enjoys shooting pool. A hustler would have made you think you had the nuts until you got to twenty a game or more. Still a good story I enjoyed reading. Thanks for posting it.

Easy there tonto....If people are gambling they are risking the dough, so you can't have pity on them at all if they get hustled, fair enough? Good for you for wanting to play your full speed, to each their own. Taking advantage of someone for cash is almost a laugh. If someone is stupid enough to gamble and get hustled that's their own damn fault. Was I ever hustled? Yep...guess what, it made me want to improve my game and get better instead of whining or trying to out the guy that beat me. Bunch of whiners sometimes I swear (not directed to OP who actually had a good story).

and the next time he would be an out-of-work painter, or card dealer just in town to work at the local casino, a truck salesman from Poughkeepsie or a logger from Coos Bay, Oregon (just been topping trees). Or just a guy looking to play some pool for bar-money as opposed to reading "Twilight" in the cab of the truck.

If he was 'undercover', he didn't show anything close to his true speed for $5. If he wasn't, you didn't 'knock' his action anyway. As mentioned earlier -- like cowboys, trail-drives and robbing trains -- unknowns criss-crossing the nation hustling big time pool is gone. Even in the old days -- big scores made the 'news'. The internet just made it faster -- 4G faster.

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there Sammy. And I've got milk bone underwear.

NIce story IA8baller. No harm to anyone's action I doubt.;)

Thanks jingle. I was definitely not trying to knock any action, just thought it made for a good story some of y'all might enjoy.

I see you're from Iowa. You going to Valley or ISPA? If so, look me up. I'll be with an Iowa City team.
