Ding, Ding, Ding ........ warning bells went off for good reason.

As mentioned before he didn't get hustled he just got beat thats all. There was no hustle to the trucker's approach. I swear some people man

Was I ever hustled? Yep...guess what, it made me want to improve my game

I'm sorry about that... I needed the money, my dog was sick, my grandma needed some smokes, and the rent was due.

Maybe next time you can spot me the 6.:p

Playing for money is just different. Some just use it to keep score in the 'game' -- some don't.

$5 in a bar is hardly big time 'game' playing requiring gamesmanship.

Que sera sera.

Was this the guy? Seriously though no need for knocking as in nice story, just delete the last part with the descriptions....

No I think this is him. Tell 'em Large Marge sent ya!!!

I was accused of hustling when I showed my game playing $5 a game one hole with this guy. I had to just laugh and say, geez, I should go after Efren if this is the game I show trying to hustle at $5 a game, just imagine how I would play at $500 a game lol....

Thanks jingle. I was definitely not trying to knock any action, just thought it made for a good story some of y'all might enjoy.

I see you're from Iowa. You going to Valley or ISPA? If so, look me up. I'll be with an Iowa City team.

Trevor

No I won't be there, I haven't played league the past few years. I try to play a few small local tournies when my schedule allows, that's about it. Oh, and I'm the reigning champion of my basement!

Good luck to you though, hope the rolls go your way.

I have no respect for someone who makes his living robbing people and that's what lieing about your speed is. If I come across it not only will I tell the story but I'll take his picture and put it on az also. Its one thing to gamble .. And if someone gambles with someone without knowing how good they are that's there fault. But playing bad to hustle someone is not something I'll protect .

The guy might be a hustler but he wasn't working at it last night. First sign, asking who the best player was and then playing him. Most hustlers wouldn't ask and if they did they certainly wouldn't play him first. Blowing shape on the last ball over and over is too obvious also. I saw Mike Massey playing on some home tables right after Katrina at a benefit before putting on an exhibition. Ten dollars to play him and you got a signed pool ball if you beat him playing eight ball. I watched him for an hour or two and he missed a ball twice before shooting at the eight ball. He hooked himself where he didn't have a shot at the eight ball every game! Would have kinda liked playing him in the evening, I had played him a little long ago in a real setting, but I had no interest in the game he was playing.

I'd say the guy you shot with is a pretty good guy that is on the road and enjoys shooting pool. A hustler would have made you think you had the nuts until you got to twenty a game or more. Still a good story I enjoyed reading. Thanks for posting it.

What he said.

BTW when pool halls existed around here there were few things I enjoyed more than taking on a road player who stopped in. This guy was not a hustler at all but rather a sportsman. I wish there were more like him in my neck of the woods. I don't get the chance to play much anymore but send him over -I'd like some fun cheap action like that with the bonus of meeting another player. If he beats me I"ll side bet on Doggin to play him so I can still sweat some pool.

Paul,

Sure looks like Julie Kelly to me!!!!!!!! Then again, she probably plays as well as the player the OP was posting about.

Those of us not into the sleazy hustler sub culture have no honor owed to those on the road trying to steal our wages. You see we don't really care if these guys ever get action from us or any other "fish" or not. I wish he would have posted a picture of him and his real name. Well at least this one appears to have had to get a real job to eat although he is thin by all accounts. DING DING, reality check!!

Nit Extraordinaire!

Nit Extraordinaire!

A comment like that makes me think that you either don't work for a living or you can only play pool at a low level and can't compete at a decent level of play...If you had to get up and go to work everyday, you would never have made that comment.

DING DING DING, the HATER alarm has sounded.

First he didn't knock anyone and second if he did so what.
What is so manly and gentlemen like about hiding your speed to rob someone.
This is one of the reasons people look a pool and say F__K those guys all they want to do is take you money.

Get up and play someone and play to win.

SHip all the nasty pm,s you want and me, then GROW UP

You have a right to your own opinion, but, wow, are you out of line!

Out of line exactly how Neil? Do I owe respect to some silly code of conduct from a world I don't exist in? The truck driver in the story wasn't even really hiding anything from what I could tell. He could have just been a bored working man who likes some action other than dumping money in the lottery machine. Hey I respect that. The OP may have been paranoid for no reason. Some really good looking strokers make mistakes on shape all the time. The OP was running racks so he may have gotten the best of it in the end anyway.

Are these hustlers forcing you to gamble or do you have an option to pass? It's nice that you are speaking for the whole community with "we don't really care". It almost sounds like you got hustled once and are bitter about the outcome which didn't go your way.

I have never had a bitter loss of money gambling on pool although I have dropped some coin. You pays your money and you takes your chances. I always assume every stranger shoots better than I do so if I decide to play them then winning is a pleasant surprise. You can't be hustled like this. Having just read Robert Le'Blancs book I can tell you the life is even more pathetic than I imagined. I doubt the world will miss it now that it's going extinct.

I liked the original post and have no problem when someone tells a truthful story, and truthfully describes who they were playing, and gives their best estimate of his playing ability...

I dont see how someone can be criticized for telling the truth  , and if it "knocks someone's action", so be it. The world would be a better place if everyone was more truthful.

The trucker may be a nice guy, but if he was intentionally missing shots/shape, he is not 100% innocent.

This is just my humble opinion.

The truck driver described wasn't hustling! Since when is asking someone if they want to gamble hustling? Why the APB? So what if he was? Nobody is forcing anyone to play.

Any time you gamble, it's good policy to expect the unexpected. Not like someone will GIVE you their money. If you're grown up enough to gamble, you should be grown up enough to take a disproportionate beating if it happens to come your way in the game.

Missing shots on purpose in pool is like checking the nuts in poker. Tough noogies.

He took that "insult" directly from my profile. As a "Nit Extraordinaire" I will never be hustled. I will quit them exactly at the right point of hiding their speed and trying to raise the stakes to ensure I come out ahead even if it's only ten or twenty bucks. I've seen all the moves and not only am not fooled by them but take pleasure in manipulating them to my advantage. I know that the ten bucks or so of theirs in my pocket when I quit with means more to them than the days wages or more of mine they have their eye on. I know this chaps their ass and this pleasures me. When I'm at work the next day I get warm just reliving the disappointment of the hustler who left dry and imagining how much he dislikes me and my nit behavior. I don't even need his 20 bucks but love the fact that I now have it and he doesn't. Sorry if this is offensive to the cult code of pool hustler losers.

Thats a good analogy! never thought of it that way, I like it.

I agree its OK to check the nuts and to miss shots.

However, in Poker, I can tell everyone in town that Joe Smith just checked with 4 kings, and no one cares. Why is it different in pool? Why cant I tell anyone that Joe Smith intentionally dogged the 8 ball?

(I'm not really looking for an answer to my question, just pointing out that there is a "code of silence" among some pool hustlers, or maybe just among hustlers in general, that I'm not sure is such a good thing)

I have zero sympathy for people that get taken by a 'hustler'. In fact, I'm not even sure 'hustling' really exists, or at least I think its a two way street.

I mean, nobody takes a game and bet thinking "oh I'm going to lose", they think they have a chance, most likely a good chance of beating the other guy. The guy playing the 'hustler' thought his opponent shot worse than him, and that he could take advantage of it. Then oops...surprise, it turns on him and he gets burned. And now we're supposed to feel sorry for the guy who got 'hustled'? Please. He was looking to take advantage of someone else and it got reversed on him. Cry me a river.

You can't hustle someone who isn't trying to hustle someone else already.

Just my opinion.

Never met anyone who had that kind of attitude and the ability or the knowledge to go with it. Only those who think they do.
