Do these rings look right?

Working on another design. What do you guys think of these rings? Do you think they weigh the design down too much?

Woods are ebony and amboyna. I don't see a lot of cues in with this combination of ring/point/butt sleeve work, and I have mixed feelings about the rings.

Just looking for opinions/thoughts.

Thanks,
Zach

She should look great. I think the ebony and burl on the butt should be switched so the points look like they go through the wrap. Like the SW look.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Scott I have that exact butt sleeve layout in my designer. Still not sure which one I prefer - the reverse of what is shown (which is what you mentioned) is by far the more "popular" way of doing it, but I found a few SWs that have it the way I show it, like this:

(From IndyCue.com: http://www.indyq.com/custom/southwest/index.html)

So I'm still up in the air with that. The ebony portion of the butt sleeve is longer on that cue than the one I designed too..

Thanks again for the comments.

Thin the billets just a bit and then do the sleeve like you have it but extend the ebony more like the SW.

What size do you have the rings figured at?

Will the rings increase in size going from joint to butt?

In a butt sleeve like your picture, i prefer the point wood at teh bottom, like you have it.

Very nice cue, I like it a lot. My only issue is with the butt sleeve end. I like the rings myself, but the butt sleeve looks unbalanced and a little awkward to me.

Maybe lengthen the ebony, or reverse the woods, but it looks too much like a ring has been placed in the wrong place in the handle (e.g., in the middle of the leather).

I might have a different conclusion with a lighter colored or linen wrap, but right now that ring just looks misplaced. Other than that, very nice!

For me

I too like the rings and or ringwork. I hate the southwest look and too many cues have copied it. If this were my cue I would make the entire butt sleeve the amboyna wood and forget the ebony altogether. Nice cue colors togther whatever you decide.

Hi,
I also agree about to use a bit thinner rings ( I like the design on them), that and to make the long points a bit longer, this will look more balanced - "longer" look. I´m not to crazy about the butt look, I would suggest to go with one wood.
thanks for asking:-) ! Please show the end result, I think the cue will look real nice.

I was trying to say "I like the SW look". Not "like the SW".

The picture of the SW looks good. Either way the cue will look great.

I use caution when building cues with maple points and butt with a dark forearm. With everything in the front dark and the butt a lighter color like maple the cue looks front heavy. On the SW cue pictured I think the Ebony butt with a short maple ring looks right. IMO it would look front heavy if the butt was Maple.
The Amboyna is medium and I'd want to test fit the parts to see which looks the best. Anytime I can keep the point and butt the same wood I do. It's the full splice look.

Howard Rings

My thoughts exactly. I really like the ring design, just a little to thick
for my taste. Beautty of a cue though. Very nice.

Very nice cue, Zach!

Here is my Howard with similar rings but a little thinner.

Yeah I like the full splice look, just thought it looked more balanced with the ebony in front of the amboyna.. Here's a version with smaller rings and extended ebony in the sleeve:

how about something a bit more south west style to suit your design?

I like that, I'll try to put it on my design and post it up.

Thanks everyone for the ideas/comments.

I'm glad I asked - I think the cue will be better for it!

Thanks again,

I personally like the bottom one best...slightly less "busy". I would like to see one more inch of ebony in the sleeve though.;)

Bottom cue flows smoother IMO. I agree that the Butt section looks a little off. I agree with extending the ebony section a bit.

Good luck
