Do you tip a TD who also played in the event?

I know we have talked about tipping TDs before, but I was chatting with a TD recently about tipping and he mentioned that some players seem to feel that tipping is not needed if the TD also cashed in the event.

Interesting in everyone's thoughts. Do you tip if the TD played? Does he/she cashing change your thoughts?

Mike

I tip 10% each and every single tournament win. As long as the TD ran a great tourney!

If I fall in the first level of money, where it's just getting my money back I'll sometimes skip it or buy them a beer.

Tipping TD????

I've never heard of such a thing or thought of it.

I must of been a lousy TD in MN, ND, SD because I never once received a cash tip in over 1000 tournaments. Someone would buy me a buffet or drink sometime, but, never cash.

I do like the idea though.

If I place and get more then $50 then I give up 10% like Jerry does, that is if they did a good job. I know that most are only getting a couple dollars per head who play in the tournament so they are not making big money. If a TD plays in it then no big deal, if they cash then I probably wont tip.

I think a tournament director should decline any offer of a tip from a player in the event.

The TD is the guy making up the flow chart, establishing the rules, and making calls during matches. He needs to remain unbiased and give no appearance of being biased. Accepting a tip from a player in one tournament can potentially lead to a conscious or subconcious bias in favor of that player, or the appearance of such a bias, in a future event.

TD's should be compensated in other ways, not from tips from players who did well in the event.

I 100% agree.

I 100% agree.

As a TD, I never expect a tiip from anyone and never hint for one. I have recieved two samll tips over the years Bpth were minmal, but appreciated.
If the TD plays and even does wel, it makes no difference to me whatsoever.
TD's often deserve tips simply for all the free advice offered.

I do usually tip the TD if I cash in a tournament, but typically not if they are playing in the event whether they cash or not. But I will tip their staff in those cases if I win enough.

The exception to that rule is if the regular TD is not there and he has someone else run the tourney for them to make sure it happens. That person usually plays and if they do not cash and I do, I would tip them. Of course I'm talking about a local tournament run on a regular basis.

Hmm, what about TD's whose already getting paid 'Good Money' to run a tourney? Do you feel you should still tip them when you cash?

This sounds about right to me.

If I knew a TD was getting paid good money I would not, there are those who make a couple grand to run a tournament and I would not dream of it and I am sure they do not expect it either. At most local stuff a guy might be making $30-$50 to run it and get some free food and drink, he ends up making like $5 an hour to deal with cry babies and some BS, if he made a $100 it was a good night for him.

I always tip the TD if I WIN a tourney. But that's strictly local tourneys. Not ten percent. Usually a ten dollar bill. Not enough to influence anybody but just to show appreciation for knowing my name and running a smooth tourney.

I'm not sure there is a correct answer here. To me, tipping is up to the individual. I never expect it.
There are lots of wait people I didn't want to tip.

Does the TD in the original post expect to be tipped?

What context was this discussion? Was the TD upset that some people feel they shouldn't tip if they played and cashed?

What type of TD? Weekly tournament in a pool room TD? Major event TD?

As far as i am concerned, TD's are already getting paid for their services and should not receive a dime more from players.

I've watched it too many times in pool rooms, where it becomes a form of extortion, where the guys who tip, get the best draw, play on the best equipment, and the guys who don't tip have to deal with terrible draws, playing on the terrible equipment.

Tipping can potentially alter outcomes and circumstances in future tournaments.
It should not be a part of pool IMO.

No way i am ever giving anyone a dime.

If the TD is staff in a pool room, and running the tournament is part of their job description, i'm not giving them a handout for doing the job that they are supposed to be doing anyway, that they knew they would have to do when they got the job.
If they are staff TDs in big events, and they don't like their pay, it's not my job to renegotiate their contract or give them a pity handout because they can't negotiate a fair price for their services.
If they are TD's in regional events (usually the person RUNNING the regional tour) they are already making money just by running the event.
Not tipping them anything.

The TD is paid by the promoter. The TD is not a waiter or waitress. I think it's a bad idea to tip a TD anyhow. If players get to know someone that always tips the TD and he/she gives a close call in the tippers favor AZ would have somemore negative threads. Johnnyt
