Earl !!!!

What happened? Did he have a flashback to 1984?

2000 US Open Nine-ball Championship
1997 US Open Nine-ball Championship
1993 US Open Nine-ball Championship
1987 US Open Nine-ball Championship
1984 US Open Nine-ball Championship

You don't have to go as far back as 1984.

This match against Mills was one I was wondering about, he is the type of player that can sometimes get to Earl. Earl demolishing him like this is going to give him some confidence and momentum such that he might be a favorite to win yet another US-Open. His draw from here looks pretty decent, SVB is a few rounds off yet and might not get past Raj. Putnam is coming up but Earl plays well against Shawn.

Earl!!!

Go earl.

I got to watch the last half. He was playing pretty good

Speed a little off on a couple shots but he made good recovery.

Love to see him go DEEP or win:grin:

Glad he bbqed mills. I think I even had a bet have to check, lol. Mills was one of the current generation players that was going on for pages on az that the new players are far superior to the old (each in their respective primes).

Yeah that was a pretty sick display.

Made Donnie look like a newbie.
If (the big question)...If Earl keeps playing like that, he's definitely got a shot.

Sorry I gotta route for Chip.....

Chip's my buddy and a hell of a player, I have to route for him against Earl...

I'd like for Earl to win another open, that would cement that he's still here to play, but for this match I gotta route for my friend....

He is the Pearl!

Go Earl - if he keeps playing like he did against Mills he could have another special open. I hope he does.

earl

looks like he could wind up playing putnam hope he crushes him hard if he gets to play him

Earl's playing with that Jousting Lance and doing well except for the offspeed that you mentioned. It seems easy for him to make those long distance quasi-power shots and get shape.

I wouldn't mind trying out an extension on my cue just to see how it would play.

I was just going to make a thread about this.

Finesse.

Watching Hopkins against Thorsten and Earl against Donny it occurs to me that the older players have a way of playing that is simply more masterful. They come with shots that younger players don't even know. They come with patterns that are often more sensible.

To me the younger players have more firepower, they are hungry to play. But they don't seem to honestly have as much knowledge. So when the older players have flashbacks where they get in the zone and their old firepower shows up and they are hungry to win then they can really show what pool looks like with half a lifetime of professional experience looks like.

I honestly think that if the older champion player is feeling good and has desire there is no reason why they are an underdog to any other living human in any given short set.

Hopefully without any perceived disrespect towards anyone,I'm with ya there John .

Barring a few isolated sets (and some of those were gambling so that's another ball of wax LOL) from younger players,I'm convinced that no one in even the last 2 generations of "great" players could have handled COM-era Earl in a race to 11 tournament match with any regularity.

My notable exception would be Shane because of his break and the fact that I've seen him play tournament matches where he never missed a ball.

On the subject of old vs young,Shane might not have won as many big titles as he has so far if he had to deal with 80's Sigel/Varner/Rempe/Hall,or even Johnny at his peak.

Sigel has probably played perfect 30+ times over his career in the finals, proven fact.

If anyone alive could have though,it's him.

Back to Earl, even as good as I've seen Shane,Orcullo,Alex play, none of them could do much if Earl's gear this week catches like his 90's peak, because he'll make those tight-ass Diamonds look like a bar box and they'll think he's THE GHOST,except he gets to break . Tommy D.

Yes...IF they still have good eyes.

Is Earl on FIRE or What !!!!

I hope he goes far...

I've watched pool, live and on tv, for more years than I want to count and I would say that Earl is one of the MOST entertaining players that I've ever witnessed. I'm not talking about his tantrums (though they sometimes can make me chuckle), I'm talking about when he is in stroke and is putting a smack-down on somebody.

Even though he isn't a text-book (Mosconi) style player, he is a genius of his own game and has super table smarts. I love his quick play and ability to "see" the game with just his quick glances at the table lay. When people take all day to figure out a straight in shot it makes me want to change the channel to find something with a little quicker pace...like watching Jimmy Swaggart lay down and cry on the Religion Channel.

That's what glasses, contacts and laser surgery is for. Plenty of great players throughout history have excelled despite poor eyesight. Grady Matthews comes to mind immediately.

Lol wow. First off the tv table was so boingy I had no clue how to control the cue ball. Secondly one section of the tv table lights was not working and I couldn't see the angles very well at all. I was really disappointed losing like that.

Back to the other topic. Iusedtoberich if u wanna stake Earl in the rack ur own 9ball us open format race to 60 over 1 day I'll lay you a price on the money. Or I'll play rack ur own ten ball even all the way around. Only stipulation is no talking or antics.
