Efren in a rare non-magic moment... What?

It looks like it's time for instant replays in major tournaments or have refs grow a set and make the right call on something like that. Only in pool do you have crap like this happen. Johnnyt

On a brunswick too!! It actually wasn't too bad effectively, efren was suppesed to lose that game anyway.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the after-tournament details of that situation were that the "pocket cam" had come loose from the back of the pocket, and was leaning forward a bit. When the ball entered the pocket with any kind of force, it bounce off the loosened pocket cam, at such an angle that it re-entered the table surface instead of dropping downwards into the pocket's bucket.

Any way you slice it, that's a heck of a way to turn the table over to your opponent... who turns the table back over to you with the same issue!

For every time I've seen that happen at pool.....
..I've seen a hundred at snooker.
I hate leather-covered pocket irons..:angry::angry:

best pocket I've ever knocked a ball into is on a Diamond

I'm curious what your talking about? Why is there a need for a replay and what kind of call can the refs make? The ball didn't go in the pocket, you lose your turn, simple as that. It's not like the ref could be like...oh that ball should have went I'll let you shoot again.

BUT THE BALL DID GO IN THE POCKET... it actually went ALL THE WAY IN, and just got spit out due to faulty equipment, not due to any error the player made. The ref should have had to reset the ball and allow Kaplan to re-shoot the shot.

And what if the ball popped out again? Let him shoot it one more time?

Ok, I've got the perfect solution: Everyone gets seven tries. If you can't get the ball to stay down after seven tries, you go sit down. ;)

I don't agree with this. I would favor the player bringing this up and doing something about it before the ref. The refs job is simply to make rulings during the match, that's it. A good example in this situation would be maybe he could have taken a suggestion from efren under consideration that the pocket wasn't playing right... And the ref could decide whether or not to address the issue.

Point is, the ball went in, and due to no fault of the player shooting, the ball popped back out due to a faulty pocket. Take a look at golf, if a bird or a squirrel moves or takes the ball away, the ball is replaced and the player must re-shoot the shot. Not the player's fault, so why should they be punished? I think that is fair. Same should apply to pool.

Kaplan was left a shot he had to hit hard to get shape with, the ball went in and spit out. Efren was left with a similar shot that he had to hit hard to get shape, the ball went in and spit out. What if Efren left the same shot that had to be hit hard again, should Kaplan have to shoot it knowing it's going to spit it out again? Fix the pocket and let him re-shoot it.

Cmon!!! Golf is a sport with a clue. We are clearly not even close to being there yet. I wish, but hell no not even close.

In all seriousness though, this is more complicated than the golf example you bring up. A player can sometimes let the cb leave the table, and thus the ob will leave the table, and the ob pops out of the pocket, and that IS the players fault. So I guess there would have to be judgement calls there for pool... not easy.

Honestly don't you guys think they both hit it too hard?

Kaplan hit it appropriately I think, just look at the shape he got after the ball popped back out, it was almost perfect. He could have gone the other way and hit it softer with more spin, but he just wasn't expecting the pocket to spit it out. Looked like Efren was left dead straight and had to hit hit it hard to draw out to get on the 9, not really many options on that one IMO
