Efren

Efren has been playing a lot of pool for long hours lately and he looks tired to me. Also, if Efren has ever had a weakness it has been the end game where he can be too aggressive. This is even more evident when his eyesight is less perfect. Those long shots off a rail get harder.

That being said, he just won the MIH one pocket with a good group and has placed well in other tournaments. I also so don't see how you watch a 62 year old man in a marathon set and say he was never a good one pocket player. He is clearly the most decorated and feared player to ever play the game and I think he will have more good tournaments to show it. I hope to see him make a comeback tomorrow but he needs rest and to regroup after this match.

You pointed out the biggest weakness in his game, just as I did..I did not mean to imply that Efren cannot still come up with an occasional tournament victory at one pocket! He is not helpless..I was just pointing out, that in a lengthy head up gambling match with a top 1P player like Scott or AlexP, he is now a definite underdog!

Short race tournaments, have never been a good way to measure a players true speed, especially at 1P!....Scott dominated him 6 yrs. ago, (in a gambling match) when Efren was playing much better, and Scott had not even peaked yet..Nothing has changed IMO!

PS..The chances of a comeback from here are zero! (unless Scott breaks both arms)

For my entire pool career Efren was always the top guy in the world, especially one hole. While being honest, we have to admit his game has dropped a bit the last several years. With that being said,he can still bring it and win against ANYONE in the world at any given time - and Imo more often than not. Shorter races may be the key at this point in his career. I would say however; imho, even as we sit here tonight he should 100% for sure be on anyone's and everyone's top 5 list - rotation and one hole but especially the one hole. It looks like I lost some cheez on this one but I ain't mad, not even a little. A bit optimistic perhaps, but when Efren is my horse I always feels like I still got a shot no matter the game count. Good luck to or EFREN!!!

I wish him luck too!..But this is not a short tournament match!..Sorry you lost your cheeze, but don't say you weren't forewarned ! :sorry:

Efren's best one-pocket days were in mid to late 90's already .
Saw him at Hard Times giving spots to One-Pocket Richard and Keith.
The spot he was giving Keith was ridiculous back then I thought .

Efren today has had a laser eye surgery and some of the common aging ills.

Any one who thinks that Reyes was never a great one pocket player is sadly mistaken, period. Reyes imo was the best one pocket player that ever played the game, he beat Allen Hopkins after only playing the game for 6 months. He gave Steve Cook 10/8 in Tampa Cooks home town and won easily. He beat Cliff Joyner giving Cliff 8/7 and destroyed him. I watched him play Leonard "Bugs" Rucker and rob him. He won 6 Derby City one pocket championships with fields of 300.to 400 entries in a race to.3, wow!!! Are you kidding me..am I missing something? I think not. Reyes is just passed his time, his game is still strong on a table that has 4-1/2" pockets where he feels comfortable playing. Of course he will never play the speed he once did, but then who ever did? Give him his just dues, he was the greatest ever.

I rarely question your judgement Bill..There is no doubt Efren was probably the best all around pool player who ever lived..All his successes were well deserved..But I think most of Efren's outstanding achivements at one pocket, were due to the "Efren Factor"..He was such a dominant force in pool, (in his prime) that many top players, just fell dead for him!

I just cannot abide that he was the greatest one pocket player, ever! (past or present).. I know you are his biggest fan, but I think that may be clouding your judgement, just a little..He was my hero too, and so were you!..I guess I just tend to be a little more pragmatic..It was only his uncanny ability to run balls, and play position, that made his opponents get so weak.. It was never his outstanding shot selection or moving skills at 1P. which were always suspect!

PS..Now that he has slipped a notch or two, it is becoming painfully obvious he needed to learn the finer points of 1P better than he did, to better defend himself as age crept up on him!..If you recall, Efren's 1P game was one of the very few things the old Beard and I were in total agreement on..We both saw the same things in his game that were lacking!

isn'T Scott around 40 years old? I think he has reached his peak

I am pretty sure if it was put to a vote for the greatest one pocket player between Efren and any other great player that Efren would get probably 90% of the vote. Of course, anyone could have the opinion that he wasn't the greatest.

A more rational question would be "who is the 2nd greatest one pocket player ever?" (that might be a closer race if put to a vote).

Thank you Billy. The criticism is unreal towards a man still able to play high caliber pool in his 60s.

What a great post. Thanks Billy!

If the "unreal criticism" remark was directed at me, I suggest you re-read my response to Billy I..;)

PS..60 is not that old for a game like one pocket..It ain't football ya know!..I have known many top 1P players, who actually peaked around that age...Time spent learning the game, = learning all the right moves! (if you are so inclined) :sorry:

i have only seen the early games both nights
it really is sad to see efren play so poorly
its like watching an old boxing champ fighting that last fight
but what doesnt make sense is for the past few months efren has been playing at least 2 balls better than he is plaing now to have won the tourneys he has
perhaps there is something else going on (health/family etc) to explain his poor play

Or maybe he is just playing bad for a few days.

Everybody posting like Efren is an APA 3 now lol. Everybody has a few bad days now and then.

I imagine being 60+ anyone will have plenty of off days. To play 8hrs straight three consecutive days will be draining. Pool just requires too much precision, concentration, and mental toughness. Any slip up and it could be an 8 and out for the opponent..

Efren should've just agreed to a race to 7. Seems like he'll get into bad games. I remember after winning one of those 2K entry 1p tournament and having played probably 10hrs for the day, he agrees to a big action match playing scott all through the night.

Try playing pool at 60yrs old at 2am. Hard to be at your best.

I'm ready to see Scott play Alex again. If not, play Dennis.
