Elfryn v. Ivory

I am getting a new cue made from Pat Diveney and i was just wanting some input from some fellow players. I have been playing with a wood to wood joint for some time now and i was going to give ivory a try. When i have talked to Pat he said that you cant really tell the difference between the hit of Elforyn and Ivory. Now price is not really the difference maker for me, I dont mind paying a couple hundred to go with ivory, but if Elforyn is a very similar hit and much cheaper then i would rather save the money. Also there is less chance of the Elforyn cracking and having to pay another couple hundred to replace the joint. Thanks for all your inputs.

Elfryn is the closest in looks to Ivory that I've seen. I've used it a couple times and find it to be softer then Ivory. It machines like nylon. If the joint material makes as much defference as people say it should have a softer hit.

Elforyn vs. Ivory

I have an Elforyn cue and I would have to agree with Mr. Gracio about it having a slightly 'softer' hit than Ivory. To me, Ivory has a bit more of a 'ping' to it when you hit. The Elforyn still hits hard but not quite as much of a ping. And with a soft tip/medium soft tip it's pretty sweet. IMHO.

Be elephant friendly & go with the Elf. I've used quite a bit of it and have zero complaints. Less expensive & more durable too. It doesn't look exactly like ivory though...it has a bit more swirl to it. You'd have to inspect it up close though to tell. I like the look & hit.
Here is a pic...

I like the looks of that cue. I'd buy one of these from you if you would ship it to me first, and then I could pay you.

Elforyn and Ivory -- wasn't that a Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder song?

Sorry, couldn't resist. I had a Joss cue in the 70's with an ivory joint and ferrule. One day I came into the pool hall out of the cold weather and the joint just cracked, apparently from the temperature difference. (I wasn't playing with the cue as I always let the cue come up to room temp)

Funny thing was that the cue didn't hit or sound any different with the cracked joint. My buddy, who better sell the cue back to me if he ever sells it, still plays with the cue...cracked joint and all.

To make the hit simular just core it with phenolic,

Yep, if you sleeve on the elf onto the joint you should not feel any differnece then the ivory, in fact i bet it will play a little harder then a solid ivory joint.

I stole this from DZ's website. This is his empirical data and I have no way to confirm it. The numbers don't represent any one particular metric, they are all relative to maple. In other words, PVC if 94% heavier than his sample of maple, but you don't know what that actual weight is...unless you happen to know the density of his sample of maple (which can vary significantly).

Ferrule Material / Relative Density
  • Maple 1.00
  • ABS 1.88
  • Ivorine3 1.91
  • PVC 1.94
  • Juma 2.00
  • Aegis2 2.00
  • Elforyn 2.00
  • LBM 2.09
  • Tiger Saber T 2.48
  • Elephant Ivory 2.50
  • Ivorine4 2.75
From his measured data, it appears as though Elforyn is 20% lighter than Ivory.

What about the sound difference.

Ivory has that nice high pitched sound. Does Elforyn have a similar sound ???
