Enough with you nits and nitwits

If Bucktooth was a gentleman to other people I guess you would have a point. But he is known for trying to humiliate people, and saying nasty things when he barks. He got humiliated at the DCC, and I'm pretty sure he deserved it.

If you think the pool rooms of old are more dangerous than the bars of today ....you are nuts. How many gang bangers and tweakers did you have to walk thru on the way to your rooms? Please spare us the old school "you whippersnappers don't know what betting is.." story.

There are guys from the old school still in the mix...Grady, Billy and Squirel come to mind. And no one of any age has to like playing them. They don't b!tch and moan about how things "ain't like they used to be". They adapt and make games they can win or have a shot at...then they send it in. (Ok maybe 1 or 2 will b!tch just a little now and then....but they still send it in :D)

If you have been around pool 50 years and haven't figured out that things change.....I got nothing for you.
Yeehaw, there JCIN. I have to say, after hearing this windy excerpt, about the nits and all.............welcome to today's pool. I HAVE been in the car looking for action. Now, let me back up and say I thought the whole situation was funny when he was standing right behind him, when he was talking about him. As far as the money and action goes, I couldn't give two shits. NOTHING came of it. It was just funny and that's all. But, I have been playing for right at 22 years. I have matched with quite a few people in the east. And in every poolroom, in every town, I can meet a Bucktooth. His name might be different, but it's the same guy.

"Hey, give me the nuts and bet a grand!"
"Okay, I'll play it. Get the balls."
"Well, well. Uh, give me just a little more and bet ten thousand!"
"No thanks, MR. Legend."
"I didn't think so, you no heart nit."

This scenario ring a bell? It does to me. Hey, if the guy was a legend back then, let him sit around and BS someone else. I'll buy him a beer and listen away. As far as matching up... come on. The reason so many people on here loved the Fatboy situation is that they can't do it themselves, me included. I can't flip for ten grand. I can't, or wouldn't flip for five grand. But I'd probably play him for whatever change I've got. But, again, it would never happen. He would want the nuts. Even if someone offered him the nuts, he'll want more. That is why people should just leave him alone and listen to the "good ol' days" stories.

If you don't think today's poolrooms are dangerous, you are a complete...well uninformed. I've been robbed twice, knife and gun. You can bet your life more people get robbed and shot now than back then, due to the influence of the new chemicals involved. WE ARE NOT in his heyday. That type of caricature is in every poolroom. It just gets old. People get tired of that type of woofing. That's why everyone jumped and were swinging on Fatboy's cohonas. For once, most everyone got a chuckle at the "highroller's" expense. Let's leave it at that.

I'm sure he did match up and play some big names. Why aren't Cliff, Johnny, Corey and etc. knocking at his door right now? They know, just like everyone else, he wants WAY the best of it. This all gets old. Let's just take up Poker and sell our cues.

Here's one for you. I'll take the three, five, seven and the break, ball in hand and bet it up. Oh, wait, that's too much? Then, can I start ragging on those who won't give that up? Yeah right. RIDICULOUS.

Things change. And the average player is a lot better now than in the past.

Over 265,000 apa players, all the new female pros that are actually good, the drugs that everyone seems to play on sucks ass though, harder to get action though. Noone wants to bet anything without getting a ton of weight.. ridiculous.

Bucktooth ran his mouth on here NONSTOP.. still does. He got shut up by fatboy. We appreciate the 19.7 seconds of silence we had from the tooth is all.

I personally would've liked to see a 100,000 coin flip.. what if fatboy would've lost.. would he flip again? would tooth? etc. That could've been really exciting haha.

I am sick and tired of hearing how this person or that person has done SO MUCH FOR THE GAME OF POOL!

It's BULL$#!7!!!!!!

Aint nobody ever done nothin in pool they didn't feel would benefit them in the long run!

If flipping a coin was gambling it would be done in every casino in the country.

I respect your point of view about the yester year of pool, but this is the dumbest statement (in reference to gambling) you could have possibly made. This makes me question your legitimacy. The reason coin flipping is not done in every casino in the country is that there is no real advantage for either player. This is the closest to pure gambling (on a single, two-option event) you can get.

Of course, Bucktooth wouldn't want a fair gamble... just like a casino doesn't. And I don't fault Bucktooth for looking for the nuts in a game. I wish someone would give them to me all the time, but this is neither a display of talent or heart. And don't say I have no knowledge of the man as I had to stop a friend of mine from losing everything he had to him. No offense meant to you personally Titanic, but the above quote is ridiculous; and if you gambled you would know that.

I have been reading the posts all you nits and nitwits have been writing about the Bucktooth and Fatboy debacle.

I want to set the record straight one final time. I have been a friend of Bucktooth's for over 50 years. I have known Grady Mathews almost as long.

All you youngsters have absolutely no class whatsoever.

We could all whip Muhammad Ali today but in his prime you would have got down on your knees and begged him not to hit you.

Bucktooth and Grady and Freddy all have one thing in common. They played
in POOL HALLS . Places you people would have never had the JUEVOS to even go into. The RATHOLE in Oakland, John Singer's on 7th Street in East Oakland, Trees in the Fillmore District in San Francisco to name a few.

These old players laid the grounwork for the sport you nits and nitwits are doing your best to destroy.

In their primes you would have been the "OWLS" who sat on the sidelines and tried to make your little side bets and couldn't wait to get back to your joint to tell your stories.

Im not going to say Bucktooth invented the jump shot but he is the first guy I ever saw do it back in the 6o's.

I remember watching him and Ronnie Allen play one handed one pocket and many of the games one or the other would make a ball on the break and run out. That was in Cochrans in San Francisco.

Those pool halls of their era were not FAMILY BILLIARD CENTERS!!!!! If you got out of line you could get your ass kicked pretty fast and good. When the players played I don't care how much money you had bet on the side or if you were staking a player you made no calls and did not interfere with the game.

You talk about Bucktooth being a lock artist. Did he ever ask any of you to play? No. Why? He played big action and played the top players.

Don't blame him if he got or gets huge handicaps. He doesn't put a gun to anyones head. They didn't nor do they now have to play giving him weight.

How many of you nits and nitwits ever got in a car and took off down the highway just looking for a place to play? Playing whoever was there.

I was not at the Derby Classic but I have seen the video. Why is there no sound.....to keep you idiots entertained. When Fatboy showed that cash Im sure Tooey said " Well you finally showed up with some cash follow me to the slaughter". He beckoned him at least three times to follow him.

And how many times have any of you ever seen anyone anywhere flip a coin for thousands of dollars?

If flipping a coin was gambling it would be done in every casino in the country.

When you see guys like The Beard, Grady or the Tooth you should show some respect and thank them for their contributions to this game.

And finally some words of wisdom from the old school:

If you see two guys shaking hands in a pool hall one of them is a sucker!

Don't beleive anything you hear and only half of what you see with your own eyes in a pool room.

My only regret is all you nits and nitwits are too young and you never saw pool when it was GREAT and you never will.

OH WELL!!!!!!!!

I was around in the 60's at Jack & Jills in Arlington, VA. Back in those days if you called me a nit I would have knocked the chit out of ya. Speed and pool 24/7. Everybody who could play walked thru those doors. One of the counter guys got his head blown off for screwing with a player.
You are not the only old guy here son!
Purdman
OH WELL!!!!!!!!!

There are players who are well known like tooth and Grady. These guys should be the elderstatesmen of the game. People to respect and so what if the fish gets bigger everytime it gets told they can't compete anymore even though they love the game and so trying to still be a big part is maybe all they have left. HOWEVER, They should conduct themselves as the class act everyone wants them to be, if not running their mouths and insulting people takes all the good away from what they have done for the game and their own reputation. Look at O.J, one of the best players in history and he had that classy reputation and [people respected him and what he did. Now look at him and there are others that have done the same to THEMSELVES. Then again you have the other side the ones that kept themselves as a class act.

the good old days when times were rotten

The good old days when times were rotten! I have known hustlers by the dozen and off the top of my head I can think of two that came in wanting an honest game. Most of the old time legends would spend thirty minutes talking a minimum wage laborer into a spot to beat him out of twenty bucks when the laborer couldn't have beaten the hustler with twice the spot the other way. The last thing that the average road player wanted was a gamble.

As for danger, definitely depends on where you go now and where you went then. Less people inclined to violence now since it almost certainly means an arrest but those that are inclined to violence are much more violent. Just as soon use a weapon if you are going to be busted anyway. Too, most people don't know how to fight now so they are scared half to death when things get hairy. Few people are more dangerous than someone that is terrified even if that scared person is a 98 pound weakling.

Things really haven't changed a whole lot except in people's minds. I think it is easier than ever to get midsize bets that are the bread and butter of people trying to make a living at pool. The vast majority of the folks we admire for betting big played for small change most of the time. The people that made a habit of betting big almost all moved from boom to bust on a near daily basis.

Not much sense talking BS about the good old days and the old players on this forum, too many of us are old enough to remember.

Hmmm.....based on your comments.....I guess you were nothing more than the "OWL" back in the day....and now you are trying to toot your own horn based on "other people?s actions"

Oh...and yes.... I have seen Bucktooth bark at the non high rollers.....He was at the BCA last year barking at "Amateur League Players"....Just your normal (as you call it Nits) that were trying to have a week of fun playing a game the love.

And BTW.....As he (and his sidekick) were standing there making a spectacles of themselves barking at EVERYONE....a 14 year old kid walked up to him with a wad of cash and said "lets play for it".....Yep.... you guessed it Bucktooth ran like a scared chimpanzee.

I am tired of old timers that chime in and say "sonny...You have no clue... I've been around the block so many times....I have seen it all".........The next day you see them on the news crying how someone took advantage of (us old folks) in some money scam and they lost their life savings...

I've seen flips for 1k many times...I've seen quarter pitching to the spot for big cash...I also have watched the "hustle in action" of a quarter pitcher (that I will leave nameless) on MANY occasions work an entire rooms.

Call me an OWL if you like...That?s fine cause that is mostly what I am...(although if you keep up with current slang...its now called a sweater).....

I have a Wife two kids and a job that are more important to me than driving down the road and getting mixed up in bad action....If that is a NIT...well...as you say....OH WELL.

POST UP OLD MAN, I'LL FIGHT YA FER IT!

Personally, I like to stay out of pool halls where there's an aura of danger to my life. I don't know, um, call it . . . common sense?

Now, the people deserving of respect for stepping into a dangerous place are the kids laying their lives on the line over in Iraq. Not some yokelheads who by personal choice step into a seedy joint.

sorry guy, titanic has gambled a lot in his life and wasn't afraid to bet his own dough..I'm married also with 2 kids and still love to gamble.. sounds like the 14 your old has more balls then your friends..besides I don't think the tooth wanted the kids cash

Yeah, a 50/50 proposition isn't gambling.... Do you realize how stupid that statement is?
Would everyone just stfu about flipping a coin not being a gamble? Everyone who says that is just retarded.

Look, I understand, Bucktooth has been around the block, and I'm not taking any of that away from him. He gets whatever respect he deserves from that.... but if the guy says he wanted to gamble, and someone said 'flip for whatever you want', then he didn't want to gamble, he wanted to feel like a favorite -- and I don't blame him for that... but don't try to poke your chest out and make the guy willing to flip look like he has no heart.

FYI flipping coins > just about any dumb casino bet there is. There is only like 3 real games with no strong house edge.

My only gripe with the 'old' guy matching up with the new...up and coming straight shooter, they won't make a game and give up weight of any type, their reason?....well you used to beat yadee yadee and so forth, therefore they think you should play em even and just hand em your dough, but thats the way it is, too bad...you can learn allot playing a player that's past his prime but still is good at making decisions.
