Fat Men and Pool -- What's the deal?

I quit playing pool for about 4 years. In that 4 year span I went from my ideal weight of 205 ( im 6'1 so 205 is a good weight for me ) to now being 257. My game is no where near where it was just 4 years ago. I know a little of it has to do with being out of practice, but now I cant practice anywhere near as long as I used to.

My biggest problem is I am having a hard time dropping the weight. I drink a lot of soda and when I try to stop I get such bad headaches from caffeine withdrawals I start right back. I also work in front of my computer 10 hours a day so exercise is not really a word in my vocabulary.

I am going to make it though, 1 way or another I am going to get back down to 205.

Might I suggest chopping off your legs? :p :D

Awesome to hear about your diet decision. I cut all sodas out of my diet cold turkey last October and started exercising. I promptly lost 17 pounds in 21 days. I wish you all the best in your diet plan. You can do it Chino!

Thats awesome! I'm trying to hit the 230 mark by the end of this week. People think oh it is diet and says zero calories mean it is true. I call BS because how do you get flavor and sweeten something without it having calories. I dont buy it, but I still drink it on occassion :embarrassed2:

I think fat people are limited in terms of being able to compete in sports... they aren't going to be able to do a lot of high level soccer or basketball. Pool is one of those things between a game and a sport where the plus-size guy can feel like he's playing a competitive sport, but he's not going to actually run around and pass out.

Pretty much all guys have some urge to be competitive at something, and for some of them it's not enough to be the king of penspinning or forum posting... so something like pool attracts a lot of big dudes. It's cooler than zippo tricks, darts, or bowling at least.

Congrats to chino for the wedding! (unless he meant someone else's wedding). And congrats to anyone else who has dropped significant weight.

Most people would be embarrassed to say this but I'd love to go to some biggest-loser style fat camp where they focus all day on nothing but losing weight. It's prolly the only way I'll ever do it, with someone basically chasing me around and hounding me like the gunny in full metal jacket.

Lol thanks, but luckily it is not my wedding. It is my older cousin's wedding. She's getting married in Hong Kong, so I get to go back for vacation, a wedding and the christmas party!!!!!

I'm way too young to get married, I still have plenty of play left in me :D

Just stopping by my favorite pool forum and find a thread about fat people and weight loss! (and pool).

I've never played pool as a fit person. I started playing in around 2000-1 and was on the downward (upward?) spiral to being fat again. In 1995 I was in the best shape of my life, running two marathons, three half marathons and too many 10Ks to count. That led to back and knee surgeries and giving up softball for pool by '01.

I have been as heavy as 275 in recent years (I'm 6'1"). This year I decided that had to change. As of this morning I'm at 261 1/4. Biking, running and lifting are daily activities for the past six weeks and I'm eating a healthy diet (most of the time!:o).

I'm also a regular on bikeforums.net and they have a "Biggest Loser" thread once a week, where everyone posts their weight, goals and accomplishments weekly. Maybe someone can start one here in NPR. It definitely helps to be accountable to a large audience for your results. As I was getting on the scale this morning I was dreading having to report a gain after a weekend of grad parties. Fortunately I was down a little over a pound.

I'm already feeling better at the table. My energy is up and I don't feel as sluggish at the end of a long league night. Best of luck to all of the aspiring "losers" here on AZB.

Quoting Homer Simpson at a pool table: "They don't call me 'Fats' just because I'm morbidly obese"

Funny, I once had a black gentleman call me "daddy fat sacks", he said he wasn't referrring to my size, but the amount of cash in my pockets.

I don't know if that was a 90's urban term, but that was the one and only person I heard use that term.

I am 5'10", 280# but I wear it well and move around the table well also. I spent 15 hours each this past Saturday and Sunday playing our APA Vegas Tournament..that we won, I went 20-3 in racks.

I know I am not healthy, but I don't drink alcohol or smoke.....don't know how a 200# me would play.....I would live longer thou.....

When I was in my 20's I weighed in at about 145 and regularly played 8 to 16 hour sets, sometimes longer, now that I'm fat and forty I can play a few hours and I'm done... I miss the thin days.

give it a try!

. . . . I know I am not healthy, but I don't drink alcohol or smoke.....don't know how a 200# me would play.....I would live longer thou.....

Eat right, exercise, avoid alcohol and recreational drugs. You may not live longer but it will sure feel like it's a lot longer. I was going to straighten out my life once. No more hanging out in pool halls and bars, no more drinking, no more chasing after loose women until all hours. It wasn't easy but I stuck with these goals for almost eight hours. That was the worst three weeks of my life!

Anyone that thins that fat or obese people really want to be that way and that all it takes is them taking a hard look at themselves really doesnt have a a clue.
Thats like saying that a druggie wants to be that way, or that a person with mental issues wants to be crazy, or that anorexic girls want to be so thin that they are unhealthy.

Most of the time its not as simple as that.
Look at smokers.. they are knowingly setting fire to soemthing and inhaling the smoke. It proven to be one of the most harmful things that you can do to yourself legally yet MILLIONS still smoke.

The brain is a mysterious thing and our bodies are majorly complicated. I am not saying big people have a gland problem. Most dont. We have an eating problem. Different cases and reasons for each person. An Anorexic literally looks in a mirror and SEES a fat person. Her brain tells her that what she sees is bad. Logic is there but the brain prevails.

Most everyone has an issue or two... smoking, gambling, eating, drinking, drugs, abusing others, abusing themselves, and many other issues. Its amazing to me how society looks at some as legit issues and others as the
person just lacking willpower.

I get up every morning mon-fri at 6 and I run 5 miles with my girl (she's a slacker she is only doing 4, but that's gonna change). I also hit the gym 3 days a week. I am 43 and I am in the best shape of my life. I am 5'9" 180. When I turned 40 I was about 220. I quit smoking, and I eat better too, but I still eat plenty. I lost 5 inches off my waist (38-33), and gained about 15 pounds of muscle. If I stop running it will all come back. Running is the best! It alows me to still drink plenty of draft beer, you gotta do something.:D

You got me on height, but I got a few more lbs on ya 6'4" 410.
Weight has never affected my endurance for playing. It has screwed with my stroke, as I dont have the clearance I once had. When I was late teens, early 20s I kickboxed at about 250 solid.
