HOLY MUTHA!! I just went to Fed Ex to get the estimated shipping costs to send a butt to a cuemaker in Colorado. If I were to insure it for $1000.00 and send it overnight it would be approximately $100.00 one way!!! I am having a new shaft made by the maker for this cue so if I pick the costs on both ends it would be just under $200.00!!! I spoke with him a moment ago and he agreed it was ridiculous and that he just got stuck on an overnight from Colorado to Iowa that cost him $65.00!! The packages all would be under 5lbs in weight.... We are both looking at other shipping options now and he feels the same way I do about the amount of the shipping expense...
Just incredible...

Dan, WOW. They are charging you 10% of the value of the cue!! That's crazy.. FED EX must really think they are going to LOSE your cue !!!!

usps

dan
put in a pvc pipe
put inside usps triangle box
and ship it express mail. when you ship express it will be handled manuallly, rather than through their machine that sort out the mail. we ship one of my tad cues to new york. we ship it and got it back in the same container and it was fine. hope this will ease your problem. and it cost about $60 both ways.

I've started using FedEx "Home Delivery". Way more economical, and I do not believe I have had a package take over 2 days to get to the destination, 3 days at the most... they deliver on Saturday as well.

Yep, USPS is the way to go. From Vegas to Ohio Priority w/$500 ins. $20.
Shipped on a Saturday got there on Monday. I couldn't believe it...

I got Fed-Up with Fed-Ex a long time ago. I've had much better luck using USPS Priority mail with a well packed triangle box provided at no charge by the post office. I just sent one with $500 insurance that cost me a total of $13.67 including the packing materials, and it arrived the next day. I've never, in 20+ years of using the USPS Priority with return receipt requested, had a single issue. I have had problems with both UPS and Fed-Ex receiving damaged items. And the cost of USPS Priority is a fraction of the other carriers too. JMHO

I went to Fed Ex as I had 2 cues to ship internationally and got quoted for prices to PI and Sweden for I believe $120 and $135. I was not paying that especially when there was no rush to get it there so I went to the post office the next day and it cost me I believe $35 and $45 to ship them. I use the post office to ship most anything, the only thing I found good about Fed Ex was there ground service which is priced just fine.

Wish to add Kudos to those who pushed using PVC pipe to protect...the protection it offers is well worth paying for it's weight!

I almost always use the UPSS....and my package almost always get there in one piece.

FedEx and UPS seem to be way more expensive for certain things. For a cue going to Colorado, I would do what some people already mentioned. Get a pvc pipe and throw that in a Priority tube. Should be around $20 with insurance.

This whole saga has gotten me to thinking, perhaps one of the case makers should design an inexpensive, reusable, virtually indestructible shipping container that would fit into a triangle USPS shipping box. It would have to fit at least one butt and one shaft, preferably two shafts.

I have an account and get the following...from city hall in bangor, me to city hall in aurora, co:
Rates & Transit Times
Amounts are shown in USD Select Service and Transit Time Standard List Priority Overnight®10:30 AM Wed Feb 23,2011 $29.80
FedEx Standard Overnight®3:00 PM Wed Feb 23,2011 $27.03
FedEx 2Day®4:30 PM Thu Feb 24,2011 $20.48

YES!! That is the BEST way to chip cues!!

If going to home depot is too inconvenient, buy those round hard shipping tubes at the PO, stick cue in it, then push that into one of the triangle boxes. that will also meet the insurance requirement of being double-boxed.

Bended cue gives shipping advice, then you pat his back for telling us the best way to chip cues? WTF?

I gotta do some work. You people are scrod!

I haven't used FedEx in a few months, but the last time was about $45 to overnight a cue from PA to GA. Have they gone up that much in 9 months?

Tell me about

it. I just went to send an overnight check to Tascarella yesterday and they wanted to charge me $30. For a friggin envelope????

Fed Ex and UPS are only cost effective when dealing with HEAVY packages. I see this at work. UPS will charge more to ship a 1lb package than the post office. However, throw in a 50lb oversize box and then UPS becomes a much better offer.
