G D Drunks RANT

Ball Banger

Couple of weeks ago I am playing for second place lining up my stroke about to pull the trigger on the 8 ball and a GD Drunk tapes me on the shoulder and asks why I chalk up before every shot. Then Last night playing the finals an other GD Drunk insists on standing right in front of my shot waving his arms so he can see the ball go in. Of course it was a cheap shark because I was playing his buddy who was sitting down. I followed the advice I read here and sat down myself saying when he left the table I would play. Of course the GD Drunk wanted to pick a fight and I was out of my element not being one of the regular good old boys there. I managed to get control of the situation and won the Tournament but I am still Pissed today. Thanks for listening, just Ranting about it makes me feel better. That is life and there is nothing I can do about it as long as I play in Bar rooms.

What you said.....it's part of being in a bar.....sounds like you managed yourself well and came out on top....even the nicest guy can be a jerk when drunk.....

and the saddest part of the whole thing is, when you take away all the beer leagues, there's nothing left to pool anymore .... What a shame.

Is this the fate and future of the game? With pool rooms dropping like flies, and the ones that remain open doing so all too often with the help of loud noisy music and screaming drunken kids leaning on your table as they stumble by it.

With straight pool at least 2 generations removed from being recognized as the pool game of champions, it will be a mere 1 generation before barfing all over the tables is the norm accepted conduct.

sorry ... end of rant :shakehead:

Drunk might be part of it but a lot of people whether drunk or not think sharking is part of pool.

There was a time when importance was stressed upon knowing how to handle a few drinks....It seems to be becoming a lost art. Congrats on the win.

I am close to 70 years old and my age is starting to show. Loud Music drives me crazy but I have learned to live with it. I miss all those good Pool Halls that have closed their door now. Like you I believe pool is going the way of Leagues and GD Drunks, at least in my area.

Golf might be a gentleman's Sport, But I don't think pool has ever been in the eyes of many. Do I shark? Sure, but with words before he gets ready to shoot. The other night I was in the loser's Bracket and went to look at the board. A player was there also and about to play in the winner's bracket. I said to him "Oh I will being playing you next" meaning he was going to lose his next game. Sure enough he lost and came to play me with a vengeance. He wanted me so bad that he over tried and my shark worked. But I would like to think I sharked him with class and not while he was shooting. At the same time, My shark could have gone the other way

Dam It happened again only this time I lost my cool.

Final set Final Game of the tournament with a two ball tap out. The opponent started the Heckle but a Drunk I never saw before jumped in on the Heckling. Only this time I lost my cool and fists flew after the words. I really want to kick myself. I am a senior citizen and too old for that kind of crap. Unfortunately My buddies were out and just left. I got the best of him inside, but he cold cocked me as I was leaving about 15 minutes later. All this over a $ 6.00 entry fee tournament on a Monday night.

Now I had the Fight with the Drunk heckler but the guy I was playing is the Me win at any cost type. He plays safes in warm up games against much lesser players and calls every supposed foul against the same lesser players and He loves to shark everyone. Needless to say I don't like him and take great joy at putting him out. But if he had not started trying to shark me the whole thing would never of happen. If I can't win on my skill I don't want win. At my age I have to sit down between innings and give a wide berth to my opponent. I guess I need to find other places to play pool or throw off so I don't have to deal with Sharking which I seem not to handle too well. BTW We were playing out of town and I guess the local boys don't like it when a outsider wins.

I feel for you. You got "Cold Cocked"........ It's not worth it. Find another place to play pool where there are human beings. Leagues are the best way to go, keep away from the cut throat tournaments. There is sharking in League play but I never seen a fight take place. The guys that do shark are few in numbers and are not respected.

Watch out for the Sucker-Punchers.

As you age, (at least this is what I have observed for myself and some of my older friends) it seems that "we" become less willing to put up with some of the BS that goes down in bar rooms and pool rooms. It can be anything from practicing with players who lack pool etiquette or un unwillingness to play players who shark. It seems that older players don't wish to put up with the negative stuff that sometimes accompany a game of pool.

I don't think anyone should have to put up with sharking. Me, I just quit playing the people who enjoy the shark. If its in a tournament, I deal with it on an individual basis.

But for the most part, I have been applying Cognitive Behavior Therapy and doing a little self-analysis and experimentation to modify MY reaction to sharking and other distractions. So far, it has been working better than I expected. (Thanks DocHutch). I still don't mind "addressing" a shark if its needed.

Guys

I got punched in the side of my head as I walked past the Drunk who was talking to someone with his back to me. I was knocked to the ground and kicked because I never saw it coming. But I only have a slight bruise on the side of my head. I wasn't hurt and it wasn't worth all the hassle. I am a small guy so I have been bullied all my life. I thought I had learned to handle bullies. My friends say I have balls of brass. But as I age I guess I need to take a long look at myself or I will keep having these type of problems. Yes age is a big factor. I am set in my ways and don't like BS. I try my best to stay young in mind by hanging out with the younger crowd instead of people my own age.

The thing that bothers me the most is the ME WIN IDIOT won by default when I Hit the Drunk which only reinforces his sharking ways. But the drunk saw it coming and had plenty of chance to back off. But still I admit I was wrong and did not handle the situation well.

You need to stop playing pool at the Double Deuce.....where the hell was Daulton that night????

IMHO, any place where a drunk cold cocks anyone, much less a 70 year old man, is a joke.....even as a bar, that is truly pathetic....what is the name of the bar and the owner....oh, and the drunk that took the cheap shot at you.....we need to out this place so nobody goes back, that is just plain crazy....

Ha this story reminds me of my dad. He carries a .357 everywhere with him. I asked him once "dad why you always carry that gun with ya". He replied, "son I'm just to old to fight these young punks anymore. I will just put a hole in there ass if they think there still tough". True story. lol

Thats just f/n crappy, I'm 51 and realize that I'm slowing and my reflexes aren't what they used to be but hitting a senior. I'm at a loss here.
This guy needs to get an aluminum bat across the teeth some night.

Thinking Crawfish and JohnnyT need to play a few games at that place.

Heh, heh, heh. Remindes me of a quote I once saw on the internet on a list of things to never do. That is, "Never pick a fight with an old man. He won't want to fight you. He'll just kill you."

if you play bar pool that's the risk you take. either learn to live with it or quit playing bar pool

You hit the nail on the head. Yes I must look at either why Drunks are sharking me or why it bothers me so much. Once they got your number, they will play it hard. Of course the first rule of pool is "Don't pay attention to the crowd".

Someone posted they were called a Pro by the Banger and Banger by the Pros. I think that might fit many members here. But what I don't understand is why is it always the non player Drunks that give me a hard time. It might be something in the way I carry myself. When playing I have a serious dead pan expression or poker face and I don't talk between inning as a general rule. If or when I shark it is long before the game starts to give the Opponent time to think. That type of shark can back fire making the opponent shoot his best. I may have sharked my buddy last night telling him I was going to beat him in a kidding way. He broke and ran 7 which is the kiss of death. He might not have rattled the 8 Ball had I not say any thing. The fact is the mental part of the game is very important.

Reminds me of me. Just remember to leave the left side of your brain (i.e., speech center) outside of the equation when you are ready to shoot. Don't let them shark you into talking. Just smile and keep chalking your stick until your opponent gets the message that you are not going to shoot until the crap stops. Best to wait forever and let your opponent speak up and tell the offender that the game will not proceed until the crap stops.

Beyond that. Get to know the bartender. Play the music that they like and ask them what's up with the jerks. Even better if the owner or bouncer (if any) is present, get to know them.

Also, who's running the tournament? Talk to them and be nice. If they can't or don't want to control the situation, screw them since they are complicit.

If there are vidio cameras, hope they hit you again and act like you are near death and then call the cops. No bar that I know of wants any police reports. And, any owner that condones this kind of behavior deserves whatever he gets. Hell, set the SOBs up for a trip to the hoosegow and a lawsuit.

Otherwise, as someone else said it's a bar get used to it and don't let it bother you.
