Gambling and Feds and the Internet

Too be 1000000% clear this has ZERO to do with Dip, or anything at the room where they played. Its a guy trolling on the streams and has made a few moves since, thats what I was told. So be careful what you say is all im sayin'

we dont need to panic or get all dramatic, or make more of it than it is. Its just a wake up call IMO, its better to be safe than sorry. Lose lips sink ships.

.............................................................

Listen man, dont tell me to man up. I'm the last person you need to say that too.

"secondly if I dont have all the facts I aint saying shit based on a rumor, thats kid shit."

You already did that. Hence, your 1st post.

Unless you have some facts or a name its just knitting needle talk. And you yoursef are perpetuating a rumor.

Ask whoever told you and get us some facts.

However because of the source there is some credibility to it, so I just recommended that people be careful with what they say. nothing more nothing less.

If you dont have all the facts on something never run your mouth, thats what you need to learn, read myu post again and educate your self.

Again, YOU JUST DID THAT in your 1st post. get some facts and get back to us.

Wonder if it was someone I don't know bugging me about a sweat bet during a stream the other week.

There's a bit more to it than just that. The story is that Fats and a couple dozen players got arrested at the Janscos' club, and taken to jail on gambling charges. When they were arraigned, Fats convinced the judge that pool was a game of skill, and therefore didn't fall under the 'gambling' law that they were arrested under. The judge made them pay small fines, and let them go. Jack White carried a little yellowed newspaper article that detailed the whole thing...it was really old. He told me he carried it in case that ever happened to him while he was gambling! LOL

Yes,that was true. That was the time Minnesota fats told the judge that if he cuts the bodies of the pool player and put it under microscope, all they will find is hotdog meat and coffee and pool players are harmless people.later the members of the grand jury rushed to fats to get his autograph. This is what I read from (?) Buddy hall`s book.

I seriously doubt that the "Feds" are investigating any pool-related gambling, but there is no doubt in my mind that those who frequent the poker sites are being given a second look due to the recent shutdown of online poker sites in the U.S.

Fortunately or unfortunately, it has only been in recent times that the poker and pool worlds have meshed on social media sites.

Believe me, there ain't enough money in pool for the Feds to waste their resources. Poker, on the other hand, is another story.

I believe the rule is, sweat bets would be illegal, along with staking a player, due to the fact you are betting on someone else. If 2 players match up, and bet against each other, it is a game of skill, and not considered gambling. The best rule is, " don't do sweat bet's with anyone except close friends, or people you have known for quite some time".

Hmmmm

So do you have a name or a screen name of who we should be watching out for?

Telling on your friend who stole a bag of chips isn't the right thing to do but telling your friend that a pig is watching and/or investigating him and telling him who the pig is, that is the right thing to do.

Now Man-Up and stick to the code of honor among thieves and tell us who it is.

Code of honor among thieves ??? Yeah, well please steal back some of the ridiculous threads that you have started, and we'll call it even.....

I was there.$105.00 and a ride on the bus!
I was in the $20.00 ring game and $`120 ahead. I was gonna break and hoff it out of there, but they rushed us!

I realize thats fiction in that movie but pool is a life style and livelihood for people and people on the outside (squares) are never aware of it.
Eric

First off, I can't believe you used the term "squares". That's so 1970'ish. Secondly, you are insinuating that people who know nothing about pool and its culture are on a level that is BELOW what poolplayers are on, when in MOST cases the opposite is true!!!

Couldn't agree more.

When I started playing pool, I was very naive about the game and the culture.

Now, I am educated about the game (understand english, patterns, stroke etc), and I am educated about the culture (the cheating, lying, dumping, scamming, etc).

If I could go back, I would say my outlook on the world of pool was much cleaner and more positive when I was uneducated than it is now. I can play much better, but sure don't look at the people around me the same way I used to.

I agree.

Maybe they'll go after PayPal? :D

THE FEDS monitor the internet 100% of the time.they have many search robots for all categories of material.their alerts are set at many different levels.if an alert goes off they attach a case worker.this is nothing new.just be careful of what you do on the net.when on the net you can not cover your tracks.their is many copies of what you do that you can't control.just be careful.

Most locations do not consider it gambling...

I must admit that when I first started cruising these forums, I wondered about how open all this gambling discussion was.

Of course since I'm not a gambler of any substance, I have no experience in this area.

It will be interesting to watch.

Be careful, folks.

In order for most gov. agencies to consider it gambling, it has to be third parties betting on it or be a game of chance. Pool and billiards is not considered a game of chance, so betting on your own ability to play the game does not violate anti gambling laws in most locations.

I suspect this is pretty accurate.

Also, if it hasn't been said already, if the betting is between two (or more) parties betting their own AND no one else is taking a cut for profit, then there are no laws broken.

I aint the legal expert, but one fact I do know, without a doubt; anyone can make a wager/bet against anyone else on ANYTHING, as long as there isn't a third party taking a cut, so to speak.

I would guess that the type of betting that goes on teh in Action Room section would fall in that category.
