I have done some reading on the topic and want your opinion?

Based on advertising material many claims have been made about Tournament Blue Cloth being superior?

But

Based on the scientific research I have found on the topic Green is superior. Here is a link to the research:

http://www.ndt-ed.org/EducationReso.../PenetrantTest/Introduction/lightresponse.htm

I found the data while reading this:

http://science.slashdot.org/story/08/04/08/2213222/what-font-color-is-best-for-eyes

I believe it was ALL marketing mumbo jumbo switching to tournament blue from green!!! I got on this topic because with the ball change to cyclops and the color change it had to effect the contrast between balls and cloth! So, i did some research and figured a poll was in order.

Hope you are well kd. I voted blue but I think that its splitting hairs here. Either are just fine.

The scientific data shows a light, lime green. Not even close to the darker green used on pool tables.

I would need to see more conclusive data........

I got a Gold Crown Three a few months back and ordered the tournament blue Simonis. I had played a couple tournaments on the blue and felt I could see the balls better and I just liked the vibe of the blue, it's brighter...

Hey Kid: According to your article it seems physiologically-correct to choose tournament blue as the "best" color for play.
The closer to blue (or darker color) the cloth, the less sensitive the eye becomes to it, ergo, the less "distracting" the cloth becomes.
Isn't that what players want? They want to focus only on the spheres on the table and for the table playing area to be "out of play."
Seems to me in that situation, there would be fewer things for the eye to discern.

Green all the way for me. I can play on the blue just fine, but no matter how many tables I've seen with it, it will never look right to me.

I like the blue but in my opinion nothing beats the look of bright green snooker baize.

i used to like only green but now i like the blue the best, even switched to it on my home table.

I don't mind either. In fact i just did my GC over. My initial intention was blue, as luck would have it, I had the opportunity to play for an extended period on the blue cloth. I found my eyes got much more tired than with the green. Needless to say, I did my table in green and love it.

orignal

the sky is blue, the ocean is blue, my eyes are blue, but a real pool table has green cloth !!!!!!

Blue to help give older eye sets more light, tho blue can get too lit when well worn, moreso than Green.

Green is ''our look''. Certain tennis surfaces I also prefer one over another, tho snooker, lawn bowling, green felted card tables, cash is green and if its level either is perfect. As kids we would say "were goin' to go shoot some on the green felts," made us giggle in youth and we of course had allot going on if that was happening.

I had a discussion about cloth colors in 2005 with Greg Sullivan when the blue cloth first came to the fore.

He told me that the color of the Simonis cloth is called "TOUR BLUE." After studies were conducted on this hue of blue, it was determined that this was the BEST on one's eyes to see clearly. Tennis venues also went to TOUR BLUE in their color schemes.

I'll always remember my first pool room experience. In the late 50's all tables were green.
The room was dark, and the green tables looked like I had just walked into Emerald City.

Green for me.

Greg used the same basic scientific data to go to the tournament blue for color contrast.

Freddie <~~~ didn't read the study

I looked into tennis' reason for changing and here is what I found.

"DecoTurf officials point out that while clay courts and hard surface courts have been traditionally green, blue is actually closer to purple, the opposite of yellow on the color wheel. Consequently, the blue surface provides a higher contrast to the yellow tennis balls and thus improves visibility."

Pool balls are not all yellow. The human eye handles the green color better at all lighting levels according to the data.

Not busting anyone's chops! Just food for thought.

Based on this info tennis courts should be purple for maximum contrast. Purple pool table anyone? LOL

I am biased to green if you have not noticed.

Kid Dynomite....you got me cornered.
I dug deep and if I had to choose ONE color, it would be green.
...gotta be light green.

I don't mind tournament blue or camel...but all my long sessions were on
green.

Maybe it's 'cause I was a golfer first.

Fortunately for me, I don't use my human eyes to shoot pool. ;)

Besides subjective taste, obejective reasons for me choosing green are: Green is in the middle of the visible spectrum AND the color/light frequency that is easiest on the eye. Blue is a shorter bandwidth and causes much more strain on the eye. Blue/violet are the harshest colors on the eye
