daydreaming about pool

Last night 5 armed men robbed Hot Shots in Miami around 2am. A number of local players had their bank rolls lifted off them plus jewelery.

This is the second pool hall robbery this week. Peg's Pocket also had armed gunmen come in and shake down the room. So far no one has been hurt.

I had been bumming about not being able to play due to shoulder surgery, but right about now I'm glad I haven't been in the pool rooms of late.

Better to be safe than sorry !

I hope they have plenty of security at pool sharks next month When Darren & Dennis play...can you imagine how much money will be in the room ? not even counting what will already be in the middle.

Very F*cked up

Unfortunately, I was wondering when this sort of shit would start happening. When I was in Indy, there was a lot of money in the room and people were betting stacks at a time. It is easy pickings as I am doubtful that many pool players are toting heat for protection (although in some of the leagues I have played that is not a fair assessment!).

My advice is to keep the big money games on the hush when in public. If you advertise that you have a bankroll of a stack or more you are basically putting a target on your back. There are a fair amount of stickup kids that shoot first then go in your pocket...especially if you are carrying big money.

Things like this in a poolroom or when playing poker are an inside job 99% of the time.

If you were in Indiana there were plenty of guns in that room.

As for our match in Vegas there will be precautions taken. Some obvious, some not.

We had the same thing here in Charlotte recently. Several young thugs would bust into a poolroom firing guns into the ceiling and then put everyone on the floor & rob them. They robbed at least a half dozen rooms like this...until they hit the wrong room and got shot by the owner. Sadly the owner was hit twice in the gunfight but he survived.

Just wanted to shed a conscious light on it.

I figured ya'll would...just wanted to throw it out there as a reminder...it's sad the thug like mentallity that some in this world have turned to...being a stakehorse or better phraze..semi-retired stakehorse I know plenty of other stakehorses as well as players that have been robbed at gunpoint...I was lucky enough to have never had it happen to me personally...now I only carry $100 or $200 cash & do all my business via credit card or debit card just in case the odds finally catch up to me for the years that i use to carry between 10k to 20k in my daily in case we found a good game...Now I only bring large amounta of cash if I know there will be deffinate action...If the odds do catch up to me then they will only get gas money & practice these days.

Glad no one was hurt, hope these bad guys get what they deserve, be it the what goes around comes around or get thrown in jail for a very long time. I never hope evil gets put on someone, but people who goes around taking other people's hard earned money is just not right.

I was born and raised in Miami - My parents still live about a mile from Peg's Pocket and I visit it most times I'm in town. I went to high school with many of the employees. I cannot imagine just having a good ole time banging balls around and then have someone point a gun at me.

Don't criminals know that pool players don't have any money?!?! Ugh.

To legally arm or not.

AS the economy continues to slip and people do not have jobs to pay their bills, more armed robberies and more angry people are going to try to seek retribution from those whom they perceive as more fortunate or as persons who have wronged them.

I am thinking about getting a permit to carry a firearm as I write. It is a difficult thing to think on, especially at this point in my life with the paths that I have traveled and the decisions I have made but I despise someone making an attempt to take an innocent person's life to satiate their anger or to better their lot in life by taking another's hard-earned treasures by armed force.

The only poolroom robbery I remember was when some idiot tried to rob Wink's in Dayton in the 60's. Old man Pappy Winkler looked at the guy and his little .22 and reached under the counter and pulled out a long barreled .45. The guy turned blue and ran out the door. Later on Wink told us the guy was lucky he ran out so fast. He was getting ready to pull the trigger.

let them come into hollywood billiards...they will most likely get shot or stabbed to say the least

My hubby has a permit, but in our state it is illegal to carry it in a bar. Might want to check your state laws pertaining to carrying a weapon.
I will admit, I feel much safer knowing he has a weapon on him, especially when we go to the mall. (Have had problems with gang activity in the area where the mall is located)
I drag him everywhere with me when I go. He loves it!!!!:D

Joey, I applaud your contemplation. A firearm isn't for everyone. There's no shame in a person deciding it's not for them. Problems tend to come from those who don't struggle in making that decision (regardless of the outcome). For me it was a soul searching decision. Shortly after getting my Concealed Carry Permit in Connecticut, I am now always armed. I took serious training and have read a lot on the subject. I also practice at the local range regularly (which not surprisingly has helped my pool game & maybe even vice-versa). As you so correctly pointed out, things are getting worse, not better. For me, I refuse to be a victim. In the above situation, 5:1 odds are very difficult to overcome. I can't say what I'd do in that situation, but responsible firearms owners learn the mind is in deed the most powerful weapon, firearms are only tools.

If you, or anyone else, is seriously thinking about getting their Concealed Carry Permit, check out ARMED RESPONSE by David Kenik. http://www.amazon.com/Armed-Response-Comprehensive-Firearms-Self-Defense/dp/0936783451 It covers more than you ever thought you NEED to know before going down the road of firearm ownership. I do not know of any states that allow your permitted concealed weapon into a bar, you may be OK at Chili's, but only if your eating dinner at a table.
I have been carrying for many years, but never to the poolroom, sporting event, any school event..ect.. there is a long list of no no's, oh yea, and no gambling halls either (remember the guy with the Derringer up his sleeve at the card game...imagine how a bad beat would go over at the poker table).

I play in a 8,000-10,000 square foot room (Full Sports Bar w/ 22 Tables), last night there was probably 250+ people there. It would take a team of 8 or more to orchestrate something in a place that size. It would be interesting to know how large these rooms were on the East Coast that got hit.

Be thankful they are only taking cash and jewelry......and not lives. Even the good people will do bad things when their back is against the wall.

these little stick up kids will eventually get whats coming to them, but in my opinion your better off not carrying a weapon and getting into a shootout with five thugs, money is replaceable your life isint.
