Just something to think about, purely idle speculation, because if Barry says it isn't, it isn't, as far as I'm concerned... end of story.
Look at the rings on the Gus cue on page 778 of the current Blue Book (5th cue from the top - Rosewood Forearm Barbell cue). Those rings look pretty similiar to the big blocks in the mystery cue, don't they? Now, the other stitched rings (small) in the cue are a pretty standard Gus ring found on several of his cues. Could it be possible that the cue wasn't made that way by Gus, but as a fix for a broken or warped Gus cue?
I've had cues with warped forearms that I had cut off and replaced with new ones. I've had different makers use parts that the original maker sure wouldn't recognize. What they might, in fact recognize (as wrong) would be the different screw that the repairman had used to connect the sections. Both the forearm and the butt could have been Gus' (we know Gus sold lots of blanks), but Barry would be correct in saying that Gus never made the cue as such. I'm sure, however, that there were more problems than just the screw, though, used in the determination.
That being said, my vote's for Dale Patten (or my perrenial favorite for all unidentified Bushkas or Botis - Mike Johnson)
