Happy Trails to Tony Chohan...

Lenny,

I'll take the under. With the state economies in bad shape and gonna get a lot worse in the next few years one of the savings is dumping nonviolent felons back on the street. I read about a state yesterday cutting time served to as little as 15% of the sentence. Ridiculous in my opinion but it could work nicely in Tony's favor.

Hu

you read my mind Hu, I was reading a few articles about earily release dates for prisoners in Ca and other states-I thought of Tony when I read this. They look at low level non-violent offenders first and that's Tonys profile. He had no priors, no weapon(thank goodness) so I'm hopeing for 2-3 years at the most, It could be less.

I like Tony and will put $$$ on his books when the time comes. Its the right thing to do,

Thanks JAMMY for the head up,

Best,
Eric

Bummer....

3 days before Christmas just seems a little harsh considering he has been out on bond for awhile. I wish him all the best and I hope his family can stay strong for him.

It is likely that he will go to the reception center for diagnostics and classification. Then he will be assigned to a prison based on the classification results. If he was in the Southern part of the state and that is his "residence" then it is likely he will go to a prison in central or southern Ohio if space allows. It would be best to wait for about two months and then check the locator listed above. The Reception Center is usually similar to max security so the men can be closely observed for suicide watch, violence, etc.

The prison he will be assigned is the perogative of DRC based on need; That is the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections' needs.

For additional information see

The following FAQ answers many questions that friends and relatives might have about all sorts of things from visits, phone calls, money and other things

http://www.drc.ohio.gov/web/FAQ.htm

From what I read the population count is not too high at the present time and it is unlikely that there will be anything other than the normal early release procedures. Tony may or may not be eligible for some of the early release programs. He will know more about this in the next few months. I am not affiliated with DRC so this is only one person's opinion based on several years experience. In general, large scale releases are not based on the State's economic situation. These tax dollars have been allocated. Massive releases are usually based on human rights consideration, primarily overcrowding.

Reporting dates for incarceration are based on several things. Note that he could have been taken from court to prison. He could have been held in the county jail until it was convienent for the State Police to transport him to a reception center. Apparently some sort of time was allowed prior to his report date. Many things that we consider usual and customary are privileges when one is sent to prison. It is the nature of incarceration.

Hope to play you again soon..

I had the pleasure / honor of playing against Tony on Dec 13th at a Tourny in Warren Mich. I was rooting so hard for him to win that weekend. Unfortunately he finished top five. I prey that Tony gets every break he so deserves. Life can be a bumpy road but good things happen to good people and Tony is a good person.

three days before christmas. that sucks. has he been in custody the whole time or has be been free on bond? if he has been free why couldn't they wait another few days.

Think about it this way, if he goes to jail on December 26th then he is in jail until right after christmas. This way he will actually be released 3 days before christmas and get to spend that christmas out, instead of this one. He is gonna miss the same number of christmas no matter what, the only thing to decide is which he misses.

<edit> Unless perhaps he has time served already or is not in line to serve the full 7 due to good behaviour. In those cases it might be best to spend the next 4 days out and then start his time. If I had to spend a full 7 though I would much rather be out just in time for christmas rather then going in just after christmas.

At some time we are all in a situation that we have no control over. I know there were many times where I thought that I was helping a "friend" could have resulted with a bad ending.

Hopefully Tony will survive and get out early. In the meantime I am sure he would appreciate any kind of correspondence.

Keep us posted.

I am sure he would appreciate something for Christmas if that is possible.

Dear Tony,

Thank you for all the entertainment. We will be eagerly awaiting your return to the tables. You now have some time to dream up some one pocket moves no one has ever thought of before. I am sure you will be like Bruce Lee whose character always gets beaten in the beginning, goes off to train in secret and then comes back stronger and better.

I am glad you didn't take me up on my propostion bet in 2003 or you would have sent me home broke. This will make you a stronger person and a stronger player.

A big fan of your game and your gamble. See you soon,

John Barton

One thing for sure is that when we see Tony again he will be lean and mean! The joint has a way of getting a guy in tip top shape.

Do u know the location? I was in 2 prisons in Michigan on two different occasions.

Only two? I figured you were a lifer somewhere before, who got an early out. Vag, you are one pretty stealthy dude! Merry Christmas to you my friend. I enjoyed our brief time together in Vegas. We had fun and didn't even have to go to jail.

I am trying real hard to not comment on this thread.

...until we meet again. :)

It is 3 days before Christmas, and today Tony Chohan will enter his incarceration for a period of 7 years.

Please don't post on this thread if you want to bash Tony, the crime he was convicted of, or anything to do with that topic. I make this post to say goodbye to a friend.

Though my boyfriend has always been quite close to Tony, they have become even closer in recent times, more so than when he lived in Califorinia. They speak on the phone several times a day, sharing laughs, playing poker online, and talking about life in general.

We both are a little upset today after saying our goodbyes, knowing that he is going away for such a long while. It is especially hard to swallow duing the holiday season. In fact, it's difficult to hold back our tears, but as Tony adjusts, we shall too. Regardless of what Tony has been convicted of, we still love him as our friend, and it hurts to see him have to go through this.

I pray for Tony to make it through this awful time in his life, and I hope he comes back a stronger man.
I'll wait for a few more "poor Tony" posts.

a serious suggestion

This is a serious suggestion: Why don't you and Salamander start your own thread or threads? There is a time and place for everything and this isn't the place for what you seem to have in mind.

I'm with you Hu.....
Tony's a good guy, on and off the table, and unless you know him well enough to be able to dispute that, just wish everyone a Happy Holiday, and hope that we start out the new year better than the last year!

Keep us updated JAM, I'd be down for adding a subscription or something for Tony as well-
