Help out Bobby Hunter

The friends and family of Bobby Hunter are uniting together to help with his battle against eye cancer.

Most people, when in need or hurting, tend to isolate themselves, as not to be a burden or bother to anyone. That is exactly what NOT to do. While we understand alone time is necessary to gain perspective, it is my experience that through our interactions, we gain our strength.

World Straight Pool Champion and cue builder extraordinaire, Bobby Hunter, has been an integral part of strengthening our pool world.
Bobby has played amazing pool for 35 years, and he is the last American to hold the title "World Straight Pool Champion." He has sat on the boards of player organizations and mentored many players. (Most notably, John Schmidt.) Bobby's life as cue builder started to bloom after being mentored by Chicagoan, Joey Gold of Cognoscenti Cues. Bobby moved to Chicago 3 years ago to continue building cues here in the heart of the Midwest.

He has been an inspiration and driving force for 14.1 and pool as a whole, most of his life.

And it is with heavy heart that I share this; Bobby has developed cancerous cells on his lower right eyelid and requires surgery, scheduled for January.
While this is not terminal-no one would want the loss of sight.
I know we have the means to help Bobby together- so let's appreciate this Champion and reach our goal!!!

Thank you,
Angel Levine

Dennis, thanks for posting this. Would be glad to have you and/or Bobby out to our cue shop in Palatine for a visit some evening. I certainly wish Bobby the best in his fight.

Let's make a donation then guys. If everybody wishes him the very best, let's give out $5.00 or $10.00 so the goal can be reached fast.

Hi Everyone,
I just want to make a quick correction to the above. Bobby has skin cancer on his lower eye lid. So they need to remove the affected section and then reconstruct his lower eyelid. It is not eye cancer. THANK GOD.

Thanks,
Deb

I am thoroughly frustrated. I want to make a strong donation for Bobby but the web page makes no sense to me. The Give Foreward .com link simply repeats the text from this post. Where do I click to send money?????

Posted later:
Thank you Dennis for helping me figure out the site. If anybody has trouble with the site, please send me a PM or call my cell 401 439-1311 and I'll explain what I had to do to make a gift.

Sad news. Nicely written post.

Besides all the things you mentioned that Bob has done for pool, let's not forget about him helping mentor and develop John Schmidt! That alone makes him special!

Will be praying for the Lord to bless him thru this trial.

Bobby,
I've been blessed by being cancer free for two years now. You can, and will beat this Bobby! I so enjoyed talking to you at the Derby last year. Donation made. Wish it could be more. God bless & Take care... Mikey

Dennis,
Thanks for posting this. I was glad to make a donation to help out a great guy and a fellow cuemaker. He has also been mentioned by our good friend Danny DiLiberto many times who has said that he's a really nice guy. After all the people who've made donations to the collection I've been taking up for Danny, it made me feel good to help another great guy from our sport. Hope all goes well for you Bobby!
God Bless!

OK, here's a Bobby Hunter story:

I was watching Earl practice at the US Open. It was about 2am and he was running balls. Another fellow sat beside me to enjoy the show, then came Bill Incardona and Buddy Hall.

Billy put his cue together and set up a brutal shot. Object ball on the long rail a diamond up from the bottom corner, and the cue ball was a ball width off the top rail. Billy was jacking up and trying to shoot that long straight shot with enough draw to bring the cue ball all the way back up table.

It was brutal and he missed over and over. The felts were slick and the pockets were super tight. Snapping a draw shot from 9' away with the cue elevated looked impossible.

Earl stopped practicing and came over to try the shot. Neither he nor Billy could make it. So Buddy got up and he motioned for Billy's cue "give it here" and took his best stroke at it. Buddy didn't fair any better than the others.

The guy on the bleachers next to me got up and asked if he could try. I was a little angry, thinking he had no place trying the shot among those champions. He bridged, stroked and stuck it the very first time. The ball fell, the cue drew back to the top rail and he promptly took his seat again.

I looked at him and recited a variation on the Walter Tevis line..."hey, that's Buddy, Billy and Earl...with 7 US Open titles among them...who the hell are you, the end of the world? He said No, I'm Bobby Hunter. I said I wouldn't forget the name.

I've told the story before, but it is absolutely true. Wish I had it on tape.
That Bobby Hunter, huge talent and humble manner.

I had no problem making a donation, I found the site very easy to use.

I hope all turns out well for Mr. Hunter, may he have a great new year.

Thanks for the opportunity to help a good guy and a great contributor to pool.

If there were problems with the donation site they must have been resolved as I was able to make my meager donation with no hassles.

Drawman623 rocks! :groucho:
